Uncharted Waters

This past year, Second Harvest Food Bank has entered uncharted waters;
never would we have realized what we were going to face in terms of the
enormous need for food. Thousands of Central Floridians experienced
the same issue during these tough economic times. We discovered that
we served 732,000 different people during the course of a year … a 152%
increase from the last four years. That equates into approximately 20% of
our total population needing food assistance … an almost surreal number
to comprehend. When you consider that nearly half are children, it becomes

even more disturbing.

efficiency; 96.2 cents of every donated dollar goes directly to feeding people.
Developing more holistic and county-specific solutions to hunger in the Central Florida region.
Our general distribution of food and all of our programs have performed
at record levels. Thankfully, we have been able to reach many more people.
The past year showed us an unwelcome new phenomenon. For the first
time, we had prior financial donors come to us needing emergency food
themselves. Who would’ve thought?

We cannot thank the community enough for their unprecedented support

and the heroic day-to-day work of the partner feeding programs across six
counties. We remain committed to leveraging every donated dollar and
volunteer hour. Our latest audit shows that for every dollar donated, we
distribute up to $9 worth of groceries. This is a welcome multiplier effect
that’s required to overcome the waves in these uncharted waters. Please take
a few minutes to scan our annual report and to discover the incredible depth
and breadth of our impact in the community. Thank you for being part of the
solution to a very serious problem. Every can of food and every box of cereal
makes a difference.
