Understanding Islam Theme
24 – 25 November 2009
for 2009
What is this event about?
Continuing the very successful series of annual symposia
on ‘Understanding Islam’, we will concentrate this year on
“Contemporary Conflicts : Causes and Possible Solutions”.
The two-day programme will take place at the Defence Academy
of the United Kingdom at Shrivenham on Tuesday 24 and
Wednesday 25 November. This will be followed by a separate
but allied event on Combating Terrorist Financing on
Thursday 26 November.

During the first day we will address the international arena,

which will include an overview of contemporary terrorist activity
followed by five case studies on the hubs - South Asia, South-East
Asia, Horn of Africa, The Maghreb and Iran and its affiliates.
Day 1 will end with an examination of radicalisation.

Day 2 will focus on the British context of the environs and

patterns of Islamic development. This will be followed by an
examination of the increasing role of psychological warfare and
the electronic media and how they may be countered.

Details of the Combating Terrorist Financing conference on

Thursday 26 November may be found at
