“Bebidas azucaradas, para bajar la obesidad.”

QUESTIONS:

What are the arguments of the DOF article?

In this article the issue of the high consumption of sugar-added beverages is mentioned, it
is mentioning the big risk that represents to the public health and that they are taking
measures to avoid this problem. One of the initiative strategies proposed to Mexico´s
Congress is to have and special tax on the products and services that have high levels of
powders, added sugars among others.

Which consistencies or inconsistencies did you find in the document?

The first inconsistencies that I found in the document is when its mention “reducing
morbidity and mortality caused by non-contagious chronic diseases such as
hypertension and diabetes”. No mention is made about the “how”, we already know
the “why”, but there’s not a clear explanation about “how” they are going to reduce
this fatal numbers. The other thing that I found about the same phrases is that they
don´t give us exact numbers, so the relevance of the information is in doubt due to
the lack of evidence, or in this case, some reliable source of information that
support the affirmation.

Which biases or errors did you find in the arguments (bad arguments, fallacies,
omissions, false inferences and deceptive statistics)?
In this reading I found a lot of omissions, because they only mention the actions, they are
willing to take, but not how are they going to make them or what results they are
expecting. Also, some fallacies are mentioned when they only talk about sugar-
sweetened beverage in relation with the diabetes and obesity, when we all know that
they can be more Thant one factor to have that kind of medical diagnosis.

Can conclusions be drawn from the arguments?

In my opinion not exactly, there is a lot of information missing in order to have a correct
critical analysis of the situation and conclude in an appropriated way. There’s a clear lack
of information to support the content of this analysis.

Is the person’s point of view derived from his or her research?

Not exactly, the way the analysis is written seems to be in a third person narration,
however I considered that this topic is allow the Autor to write a more extensive
relaxation or analysis about the current health situation in Mexico.

How are you ordering your own arguments (to avoid being unfocused)?

If I had written this review, I probably would have commented more on implementing
strategies to improve the situation of diabetes and other diseases derived from high sugar
consumption in beverages. And I would also have focused a lot on investigating the
estimated results of improvement when implementing a tax on high sweeten beverages
with which it is contemplated to reduce the purchase of them.

ANALYSIS:

So to make a quick review about all the questions already answer in this report, about the
analysis made about the sugar-sweeten beverages tax to lower obesity, the point was
made and for fist instance in my sound like a good idea. But to made a real deep analysis
of the information given, there’s a lot of point to take into consideration before accept
this initiative. We don´t know an estimated number of people that would be benefit
because of this, how long does in going to take to see the results? Or even why they have
the idea that having a highest price would persuade people to not buy that kind of
unhealthy but tasty products?. All of this questions for me are fundamental in order to
conclude in a complete way about this topic.
