O How I Hate Poetry!

O how I hate poetry!

Easier to write with rules from authority,
Its lack of laws have their flaws,
Thinking of ideas gives me pause.

A lack of concentration,
Has led to procrastination,
A need for motivation,
Asks for great meditation.

It has now gotten late,

Who knew thinking was a mistake,
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The pages stay blank.

A buzz! A distraction!
Ready for my reaction,
Maybe it's just lack of passion,
That's cause for my lack of action.

Now it is late,
Wishing it was due at a later date,
But now it is time for bed,
Perhaps tomorrow will be a better day.

Poem Explanation:

Subject- The poem is about a student writing a poem for his english class. The student is

frustrated about how difficult it is to write a poem. He finds himself unable to write anything

down because of how little rules poetry has. His mind wanders as he wonders what the point of

writing poetry is. The student realizes that it is now late and gets angry about all the time wasted

thinking about what to write. But then his phone rings and he gets distracted by his phone. He
wonders why he cant get himself to write anything down but decides he will just do it tomorrow

instead.

Theme- The poem is about procrastination. Although our speaker is trying to write a poem he

ultimately struggles to write it because he lacks the motivation, creativity and passion to write. It

reflects how a lot of teens do their school work.

Tone- Doesn't like writing poetry. The speaker is not a fan of poetry yet he writes a poem about

how much he hates poetry.

Literary devices-

“Authority”(2) relates to the typical structure in writing. It symbolizes how it is easier to follow

rules than it is to make your own.

“Meditation”(8) Used to emphasise deep thinking. Relates with finding purpose and passion.

“O how I hate poetry”(1) Statement is a use of irony because although the speaker says he hates

poetry he still is writing the poem.

The bang’s are the speaker hitting something in frustration, and the buzz is the speaker's phone.

The last line of the poem states what all procrastinators tell themselves
