The Contemporary World

1. Examine the interaction between the nation-state and international

organizations. Which has the greatest impact on the government?

The nation-state is a distinctive political community with its own set of rules and
practices and that is more or less separate from other communities. On the other hand,
governments around the world and many individuals participate in various international
organizations such as red cross, United Nations, NAFTA and many more. Hence,
nation-states interact with each other in international organizations.

It is noticeable that the nation-state has the greatest impact on the government.
The states are sovereign and they develop choices and agreements through the
government that is part of the state. Further, they have the right to influence a decision
within the state and compel the government to take actions that only the state can do.
The nation-state is the one who developed those international organizations and without
them, it would have not to occur into existence. Basically, diplomacy is being governed
by international organizations. They can take rightful litigations and fine, however, they
cannot urge the government to execute things because only the state can do it. Thus, it
is apparent that nation-state has a vast impact on the government.

2. Do civil society and INGOs strengthen or undermine the role of the government
in international relations? Why or why not?

Civil society and INGOs can strengthen or undermine the role of the government
in international relations. They can intensify organizational systems and procedures in
order to obtain a mutual intention which may be international relations.

There are several non-government organizations, like the Red Cross, that is
connected with international organizations. They function to attain a mutual objective,
for instance, the sustainable development goals. They also contribute methods and
techniques that the government may acquire in order to enhance the existing policies.
Further, since the government cannot immediately suffice and offer some kind of
assistance, these non-government organizations and civil society stretch out to those
nations who are in need of funds and support to help them whenever they experiencing
a shortage of necessity and in case of emergency. Generally, international relations are
being strengthened as long as they reach out to one another.
3. Are the civil society and other organizations truly separated from the
government’s actions and policies? In what ways can the state maintain its
sovereignty amid globalization?

The civil society, government and other organizations are all associated with one
another. However, the government or state has it’s own a set of policies and actions
that kind of separates them to other communities. Hence, the economy is the actual
superior rather than the political one handled by the government.

The ways that the state must perform to maintain its sovereignty amid
globalization is to find and make solutions or remedies to the challenges that they are
facing which are the traditional challenges, challenges from national or identity
movement, global economics, and global social movements. Every state has its own
freedom to self-determination and the other country must not interfere in the
relationships of those states. In addition, the global procedures of several aspects are
not as influential as many believe. For Instance, it may be seen that the global business
weakened compared to other businesses within many nations. Hence, globalization
may not be a threat to the state because it can also be discerned as an opportunity for
the state. It may help the state to improve different practices that would enhance their
government system. Thus, the state can maintain its sovereignty amid globalization by
going with the flow and take globalization as an advantage to enhance their way of
supervision to society. Despite the changing world, sovereignty in the state is still being
maintained and being practiced up until now during the emergence of globalization, for
instance, the Philippines. Perhaps in many countries, it is already obsolete but there are
still others who maintains it.

Reflect: Is the death of the nation-state concept forthcoming or has already

started up in this period of globalization?

The death of the nation-state has already started up in this period of

globalization. It has started in some parts of the countries especially in Latin America
wherein they have no longer their own strategies. Moreover, globalization really affected
the state, it may be positive or negative but surely, it gives a vast impact on the world.
During this period of globalization, numerous events have occurred that created various
international relations within the countries. That being said, it affected the nation-state
because associating with other countries stretches or bends their own set of rules and
practices that should be strictly followed.
