DIDACTIC UNIT 14
DISCOVERING LONDON
1. JUSTIFICATION
This unit is intended to motivate students by getting them to describe and plan a
holiday trip. Therefore, it starts with simpler input that gets more complex as the lesson
goes on. This allows the teacher to go from the old to the new, making sure that all
students get involved in the activities and feel at ease. The material chosen includes oral
and visual messages, which will help students to follow the teacher by establishing
connections between the foreign language and the images. Motivation is also enhanced in
the final task. As students will have to explore, express and exchange their work with the
rest of the class they will be encouraged to do their best. Furthermore, the use of the ICT
will help them become autonomous and life-long learners.

8. TEACHING-LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1st SESSION
In order to attract our students’ attention, we will start by introducing the topic in a
very attractive way by means of a brief warming-up exercise.
1) Firstly, I will ask the students to read an advertisement and answer some
questions. They will also have the opportunity to listen to the text so that they can
focus their attention on the pronunciation of words. There will follow correction of
the questions. (20 minutes)

London. (15 minutes)
3) Finally, students will be presented some pictures and they will have to describe
several specific aspects such as items of clothes, the location of the boy
appearing in the picture, what is happening in the different scenes… (15
minutes)
4) Conclusion (5 minutes)
These activities involve the four skills and will take 55 minutes approximately. I
will have to take marks because I must think about the assessment.

9. METHODOLOGY
Our teaching method will be adapted to the characteristics of the students in order
to foster their creativity, autonomy and interest towards learning English. We also aim
at integrating ICT in the learning process.
Our teaching approach is functional, practical and useful. We are going to follow a
direct and functional method using all audiovisual means available in our school: video-
recorder, television, computers, overhead projector...We must make our students
aware that learning English has a real purpose, that of communication, and for this
reason we aim at a communicative use of the language. This COMMUNICATIVE
APPROACH will become the real basis of our teaching method because it allows an
atmosphere in class in which language is felt as a means of communication and not
merely as a system of rules, promoting many conversational and communicative
exchanges, making practice the best instrument of learning.
