What I Need to Know

This module was designed and carefully planned and written in your level. It is here
to help you understand on how to multiply decimals mentally up to 2 decimal places
by 0.1, 0.10, 10 and 100. The medium of instruction used and the activities provided
are also within your level. Discussions are aligned and match with the textbook and
the curriculum guide you are now using to help you understand the lesson better.
After completing this module, you are expected to:

 Multiplies mentally decimals up to 2 decimal places by 0.1, 0.01, 10 and 100

(M6NS-Ie-111.4)

What I Know

Find the product mentally by shading the correct answer.

1. 7 x 0.1 = _______ 0.7 70

2. 3.93 x 0.1 = _______ 0.393 39.3

Lesson Multiplication of Decimals

2 Mentally up to 2 Decimal Places

by 0.1, 0.01, 10 and 100
Multiplying decimals mentally will help you develop your basic math fluency
in order to improve your computation skills in solving a higher and more advance
mathematical skills easily. With this lesson, you will develop your skills in
multiplying decimals mentally up to 2 decimal places by 0.1, 0.01, 10 and 100 to
prepare you for the next lessons.

What’s In

Multiplication is said to be a repeated addition. For you to be able to

understand our next lesson, let us try to measure first your learning in adding
decimals. Answer the riddle by finding the sum of the following equation. Match your
answer to the letters below to solve the riddle.

Riddle: I am a 5-letter word that you always use in school. I am normally below
you. If you remove my 1st letter, you’ll find me above you. If you remove my 1st and
2nd letters, you can’t see me. What am I?

1. 5.62 + 72.36 =___________

2. 39.75 + 15.62 =___________
3. 92.27 + 18.49 =___________

Notes to the Teacher

The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in the
development of this competency including the schema or
background knowledge which may reinforce learning. This
module will help the learners bridge the gap of learning to attain
mastery of the lesson in its spiral progression.

What’s New

Are you fond of solving mathematical equations mentally? What techniques

do you use in solving such equation? Were you able to discover other strategies in
solving equation mentally? Read the situation below and try to figure out the
strategies and techniques used by the children in solving mentally.

Lino and Lina practice their skills in multiplying decimals mentally. Let’s
find out what are their techniques or strategies in answering the equations
without solving in a paper.
LINO: Hi Lina, I heard that we will be having an activity tomorrow regarding
multiplying decimals mentally.
L LINA: Yes Lino. Why don’t we practice for tomorrow’s activity?
LINO: That’s a good idea! I will be giving you equations with 0.1 and 0.01 as one
of the factors.
LINA: Okay. In return, I will be asking you equations with power of 10 as one of
the factors.
LINO: Let’s start. What is 15 x 0.1?
LINA: Oh, the answer is 1.5
LINO: Correct. What about 35.4 x 0.1?
LINA: I think it’s 3.54
LINO: Amazing! It’s your turn to ask now.
LINA: What is the product of 23.8 x 10?
LINO: I believe it’s 238.
LINA: Oh that’s right. What about 71.38 x 10?
LINO: The product is 713.8
LINA: Good job! It’s your turn again.
LINO: Okay, what is the product of 218.9 x 0.01?
LINA: Oh, I think it’s 2.189
LINO: Great! What about 556.32 x 0.01?
LINA: Well, the product is 5.5632
.
LINA: Very good! What about 323.79 x 100?
LINO: Oh that is 32 379.
LINA: Amazing! We both answer all the equation.
LINO: Yes Lina, I believe we are ready for4 the activity tomorrow.
LINA: Well, the product is 5.5632
LINO: That’s correct. It’s your turn again to ask.
LINA: What is the product of 467.1 x 100?
LINO: Let me try it, I believe it’s 46 710.
LINA: Very good! What about 323.79 x 100?
LINO: Oh that is 32 379.
LINA: Amazing! We both answer all the equation.
LINO: Yes Lina, I believe we are ready for the activity tomorrow.

Answer the following questions:

1. How did Lina answer Lino’s equation?
2. How did Lino answer Lina’s equation?

What is It

Multiplying Decimals Mentally Up to 2 Decimal Places by 0.1, 0.01, 10

and 100

Were you able to answer the questions? Let’s check on how they solve the equation.
Let us analyze how Lino and Lina solve the equations mentally.

Lino’s Equation Lina’s Equation

15 x 0.1 = 1.5 23.8 x 10= 238
35.4 x 0.1= 3.54 71.38 x 10= 713.8
218.9 x 0.01= 2.189 467.1 x 100= 46 710
556.32 x 0.01= 5.5632 323.79 x 100= 32 379

If you will notice, Lino answered the equation by moving the decimal places going
to the left depending on the multiplier, that is:

15 x 0.1 = 1.5  In multiplying decimals with

0.1 as the multiplier, move
35.4 x 0.1= 3.54 the decimal point one-step
going to the left.

218.9 x 0.01= 2.189  In multiplying decimals with

0.01 as the multiplier, move
556.32 x 0.01= 5.5632 the decimal point two-step
going to the left.

5
Let us analyze Lina’s equation this time.

Since the multipliers are powers of 10, count the number of zeros then move the
decimal point to the right based on the number of zeros.
23.8 x 10= 238  In multiplying decimals with
10 as the multiplier, move
71.38 x 10= 713.8 one-step going to the right of
the decimal point.
467.1 x 100= 46 710  In multiplying decimals with
323.79 x 100= 32 379 100 as the multiplier, move
two-step going to the right of
the decimal point.

0.01, 10 and 100?
Complete the statements below by writing the missing word or number.
To multiply decimals mentally up to 2 decimal places by 0.1, 0.01, 10 and 100
let us remember the following:

1. Multiplying whole number or decimals by decimals

a. In multiplying decimals by _______, move the decimal point one step to the
left.

b. In multiplying decimals by 0.01, move the decimal point _______ step to

the left.

2. Multiplying decimals by power of 10:

a. In multiplying decimals by 10, move the decimal point _______ step to the
right since 10 has only one zero.

b. In multiplying decimals by 100, move the decimal point two step to the
_______ since 100 has two zeros.

What I Can Do

Sarah wants to open a school supply business. She would like to know if how
much profit she will get from every item if she will multiply the cost of each product
to a certain percentage as to 0.1, 0.01, 10 and 100. Let us help Sarah solve her
problem to see how much will she earn. Let us complete the table using mental
computation.
