1. Prove that if f is strictly monotonic on an interval I, then f is injective

on I.
2. Let f be a continuous function defined on an interval I. Show that, if f
is injective, then it is strictly monotonic on I.
3. The function f : R → R defined by f (x) = 1+x+x2 has neither maximum
nor minimum at any point. Why?
4. Find the points at which the function f : R → R defined by f (x) =
1 − x − x3 attain local maxima and local minima.
5. Find the local extremum points of the function in its domain (i) f (x) =
x2 x
(1−x)3 and (ii) 2 − x.

6. Decompose the number 36 into two factors such that the sum of their
squares is the least possible.
7. Examine if f has a local maximum or a local minimum at 0.

that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius r.
9. Determine the altitude of a right circular cone of greatest possible volume
that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius r.
10. Show that the height of closed cylinder of given volume and least surface
is equal to its diameter.
11. Find the point on the curve y = logx, tangent at which is parallel to the
chord joining the points (1, 0) and (e, 1).
12. Separate the interval in which f (x) = x + x1 , is increasing or decreasing.
13. Find approximate values of sinx, cosx, tan−1 x at the point x = 1/2 using
Taylor’s formula and find the estimates for the errors for different values
of n.
