REACH meals for HAITI
Saturday, March 12 | 11:30 am
Every minute 12 children die from starvation. Kids Around the World (KAW) is
part of the solution to world hunger and is one of Calvary’s Reach Global mission
partners. We will be partnering with KAW during Missions Week 2011 by
hosting Meals for Haiti*. Join us on March 12 at 11:30 am in the GYM as we fill
packets with nutritious food for children in Haiti. We are asking YOU to help us
by inviting your friends, family and neighbors to join us as we package up these
meals. We will be advertising this effort to our community too! Invite someone
to join you at the packing event on Saturday, and then invite them to come back
on Sunday morning as Josh McDowell shares a great missions message with us!
This is a good opportunity to get people here that normally don’t come to church
– and your chance to show them how we share God’s love in word and deed.
Jesus is known as the “Bread of Life.” When KAW distributes the food packets, they
also share they Message of salvation so that these children will have the “Bread”
that will last more than a day, more that a week, more than a year! This “Bread” will
last an eternity! Calvary first partnered with KAW in the purchase of flannel graph
curriculum that they used in training and equipping local Sunday School teachers
in sharing the Life of Christ, Creation and stories from Genesis. This is done
through local churches in cooperation with the food distribution and building
of playgrounds. Last year, Calvary Church donated money towards the Haiti
earthquake disaster, supplying over 10,000 meals to children in Haiti. Your Faith
Promise Missions giving helps us continue to support KAW and other mission
agencies Calvary partners with globally. We would like to send an adult Short Term
team from Calvary in July to distribute the meals that are packed on March 12. If
you are interested in being a part of this team, please contact us at 714.550.2341.
* One food package contains six servings. When used, each package is prepared in less than
20 minutes by adding to it boiling water. One box shipped contains 36 packages and feeds
216 children. One pallet contains 66 boxes with 2,376 packages and feeds 14,256 children!
The food is a rice and soy mix fortified with 21 vitamins and minerals, six dehydrated
vegetables and chicken flavoring. This soy (52% protein) and nutrient rich formula
reverses the starvation process and its effects. Each filled packet costs 25 cents, which covers
everything from raw ingredients to the shipping of the container. The distribution of the
food is done through local partners in Haiti to ensure children receive the meals.
Guest Helpers: The “Circle of Silence” is a section of the country in the

central western part of Mexico where less than 2% of
people identify themselves as evangelical believers, and is
named such because the influence of the Gospel has been
largely silent there. Guadalajara is the largest city within

It is here, in a small building on a little corner of a busy, run down street in downtown Guadalajara that
Calvary Missionaries, Don and Janie Nellis, share the love and Good News of Christ through Ana’s Kitchen.
Last year a team of Guest Helpers joined Don and Janie in serving a hot meal and sharing the Good News
of Jesus Christ to over 800 children, teens and adults living on the streets. Most of them were hearing this
message for the first time!

Ana’s Kitchen normally consists of a staff of four people who faithfully prepare food lovingly for people in
groups of 20 at a time. They daily encounter new people and face dangerous situations. In Guadalajara, cheap
drugs can easily be acquired on the streets, and Ana’s Kitchen sees many regular users every day. As the violence
increases in Mexico, so does the attendance at Ana’s Kitchen. And yet, through these difficulties, the staff remains
a light for Christ in a city shrouded in darkness. The love and strength of Christ, which is far beyond their own,
empowers them.
This love and strength has helped to create a new vision to reach the people within
the Circle of Silence, this time in León, Mexico. Last January, Calvary Church’s
Guest Helpers partnered with Don and Janie Nellis and four other churches to
restore a home for poor and destitute women who have been spending the night
on the street. The “House of Refuge for Women, León” is now physically protecting
these women and showing them God’s love in action. A bed and shower, light
supper, Bible reading and explanation can make all of the difference. It is the prayer
of all those involved that these women would experience the saving love of Christ,
and place their faith in Him.

High School Ministry Partnership with Ecuador bHyi g hMSeclhi os os al DBirr eocstcohr
C alvary Church has been
long committed to sending
students on short term mission
trips. High school students through
the years have headed off to Peru,
Brazil, Ecuador, Albania, Kenya,
the Philippines and many other
locations. For some years now they
have had a desire to choose one area
of the world and people group with
which they could develop an on-
going ministry partnership. After
serving in the country of Ecuador
with Calvary missionaries, Chet and
Katie Williams, they began praying
about what it would look like to do
this on a more regular basis. The
Williams had been seeking a team to
come work alongside nationals Sixto
and Libio, and a new ministry in the
remote village of Zancudo.
Zancudo is very unique to the
country of Ecuador, because these
people groups are ancestors of black
African slaves who escaped from
the ships coming into the port.
These black African people groups
have long been in desperate need
of the gospel with its message of
redemption and forgiveness. Sixto
and Libio had long been praying for
resources to help develop various
outreach ministries to this unreached
people group. Chet and Katie helped
connect them with Calvary Church

and the high school ministry with its
passion for missions.
In 2008 the high school began making
plans to return to Ecuador. And so,
during Missions Conference week,
the Student Ministries FEAST cost the
same as previous years but the food
consisted of rice and water! Instead
the money collected was sent to Sixto
and Libio and was used to purchase
a plot of land dedicated for the
Zancudo ministry. In June of 2009,
they sent their first team of Calvary
high school students to Zancudo
to help start building a community
center on the land they purchased
with the FEAST money. Then they
returned again with their second
group of high school students in the
summer of 2010. However, instead
of a building project, this time they
helped put on a summer camp for
400 local youth using the community
center as the base of the camp.
As we approach the summer of
2011, they are thrilled to continue
this partnership they have with
our Calvary missionaries and the
nationals of Zancudo. The High
School Ministries short term team
is looking forward to putting on
another camp where they can share
the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Because of Calvary’s involvement,
they have been able to bring a large
amount of credibility to the efforts
of Sixto and Libio. The Zancudo
peoples have been able to see that
a bunch of Americans care enough
about them to: travel all the way to
the middle of the jungle; filter their
water; bring games and prizes; cook
for them; and care for their children.
This amazes the people of Zancudo!
The students are truly showing
Christ to these people in their words
and deeds.
Their prayer is that they can continue
to be a tool in the hands of God
as He reaches out to the people of
Zancudo. We pray that these high
school students will continue to be
transformed, as they set themselves
aside to serve people, completely out
of their comfort zone. Please join us
in praying for the people of Zancudo
and the leadership there that is
working tirelessly to share the good
news of Jesus Christ.

 We live in a place where information is at our fingertips, 24 hours
a day if we so desire. What once would take hours of research in a
library now takes moments using “Google,” “Bing” or “Cha-Cha.”
We can even download our Bible version of preference on our
phones. In a world of bit-torrents and Wikileaks the idea of being
unable to access information is becoming a foreign concept to us.

So imagine how surreal a moment Calvary Missionaries, David

and Wendy Nellis, must have experienced on September 25, 2010,

When a small church in Tiltepec asked for tools to
grow in their faith, David and Wendy Nellis
began the hard work of fulfilling their request.
Most Chatino families will never be able to purchase a computer
or have internet access. Even with a cyber net in their village,
most would not know how to use it or be able to pay an hourly
fee. And even if they could, there would be very little available
to them in Chatino. So when the Chatino church requested a
Biblical Dictionary, the Nellis’s understood their need and began
undertaking the task of translation work. This is the first of three
volumes, which, when completed, will contain the most important
words found in the Bible, its people, their history, their towns,
places, occupations, customs and doctrines.

Thanks to email, translation work for these dictionaries is now done

online, although it’s not the fast speed that we typically are used
to using. David and Pastor Venancio plan to begin translation on
volume 2, letters F through N, when the long rainy season is over
and their internet works again.

It may be a while before this information is available online,

but thanks to David and Wendy, the Chatino church will
not have to wait until the internet catches up.

THE THIRD LAUSANNE CONGRESS
ON WORLD EVANGELIZATION

Almost five months have passed since we had the
privilege of attending the Lausanne Congress III in
Cape Town, South Africa and it still has a hold on me
like nothing before or since. The sensory overload of
the sights, sounds, emotions, and spiritual high that
happened there make it one of the most important
things ever experienced in my lifetime. While I was
there I had the privilege of meeting many of our
brothers and sisters from around the world, and the
Lord showed me some important things.
1. The United States is not #1 anymore.
Compared to many of the other countries we heard
from that week, they are doing so much more than
we are here. We look anemic and apathetic in sharing
about Christ. We think nothing of taking a weekend
off from church to go out of town for our own
pleasure. Yet, most of the church around the world is
not only meeting Sunday, but often several days and
evenings through out the week. The church is their
number one priority. Their second priority is sharing
Christ with their neighbors and others who may not
have heard the good news. And each works on the
other – they worship the Lord, get into His Word, and
pray for His work in their lives. Then with enthusiasm
they go out with the knowledge of His great salvation
and love and share this with those they come into
contact with, knowing that they are His instruments
in this world. Can we turn things around and show the
world that we treasure Christ more than any human
comfort or prosperity?
2. The urgency of sharing Christ with the lost.
One of the most important things that came to me
during this time was the reminder of the urgency that

we have to share the message of Christ’s salvation
with those who have never heard this good news.
When the gospel takes root in our souls it pushes
us out into the world and awakens in us the horrible
reality of hell in the future of those without Christ.
Yes, we need to care about all suffering, but
especially eternal suffering! We seem to have a
defective view of hell or heart. How can we care
for those who are hurting physically – abuse, lack of
food, poverty – and yet forget or ignore that they
are in a more desperate state of living eternally
in hell? It is our major responsibility to share the
message of hope of eternal life with those in our
influence – our neighbors, mailman, grocery clerk,
box boy, waitress, etc. Why have we forgotten
this? Why have we become so apathetic about
something that is so important? I don’t want to be
at the Judgement Seat of God and hear any one
say to me, “Why didn’t you tell me about this? Why
did you not care enough about my eternal destiny
to not share this message with me?”
These are just two of the points that God has
impressed upon me through this experience.
Please pray that the things that I learned at Cape
Town will be used throughout the years ahead as
I serve with you here at Calvary Church. It is only
worthwhile if we are able to redeem the good that
we learned. Thank you again for your prayers while
Roger and I traveled and during our time at the
Lausanne Congress III for World Evangelization. If

On a Sunday morning in May 2009, a
devastated Regina Garriott walked out
of Calvary Church in the middle of the
service. That morning she had listened
as both kids and adults spoke glowingly
of how their church camp experiences
had made Jesus even more real to them.
The mother of twin girls with Autism,
Garriott was crushed by the thought
that going away to camp would never
be a reality for her daughters.
“There was no way John and I could see
it happening with Ashley and Rebecca’s
dietary restrictions, medications and
other issues.” Garriott said. “I didn’t see
how I’d feel good about sending them
away for the weekend. I envisioned
we’d be getting a call at 8:00 the first
evening. It just seemed like a huge
impossibility.”
A month later a new Young Life
Capernaum ministry was born in
Orange County. Young Life, an
organization that was started in
the 1940’s, is all about building
relationships and sharing Christ with
teens. Capernaum is a dedicated
branch of YL for teens with disabilities.
What makes this ministry so vital is
a combination of factors. First, teens
with disabilities are a population that

is growing exponentially. Second,
traditionally there has been little or no
place among the church in America for
these kids. Churches across the nation
are just now starting to discuss it, but
they are playing catch up. So there
are a lot of disabled teens who have
not heard the Gospel message here in
America, simply because they have had
“no place”. Capernaum serves to open
that door; to affirm to these individuals
that they are indeed “fearfully and
wonderfully made” and that they are
loved by Jesus, every bit as much as any
other teen.
Regina and her husband, John, learned
about Capernaum from a pastor at
Calvary, and called the Capernaum
director, and fellow Calvary Church
member, Kara Kawanami. Although
they were at first apprehensive to try
something new, it quickly became a
place where they could go and enjoy
genuine relationships. “This is my
daughters’ thing.” Says Regina. “They
come to club nights which are held
one to two Fridays a month. I am not
overstating to say that this has opened
up their world and changed their lives!”
In fact, through Capernaum, Regina’s
daughters were able to attend camp for
the first time last fall, something they
did not think was possible before.
Regina now serves in the role of support
coordinator. She communicates with
the other parents and coordinates ways
in which they can support Capernaum
director, Kara Kawanami, the amazing
volunteers, and the YoungLife chapter.
“This has also given us a structured
way of meeting other parents in our
situation in a positive place. Most
parents with disabled children are
extremely isolated and have no time or
place to unwind. Capernaum provided
a respite and has actually allowed my
husband and me to go on the first date
night we’d had in years.”

 My great friends, Jesse Brown, Leslie Schneider and
I have gone to Calvary Church with our families for
years. The three of us recently felt called to join a
ministry called Capernaum. Capernaum is a branch

of Young Life that is dedicated to serving teens
with special needs. We have loved volunteering
there for the past year and a half. Through serving
in Capernaum we were connected with Calvary
member, Regina Garriott, a parent of two amazing
girls who attend to our group. She has graciously
helped open Calvary’s eyes to the need for programs

designed to meet the needs of students with special
needs here at our church.

Jesse, Leslie and I all prayed about the need for a

program and we unanimously felt like there was
something we could do. Melissa Brosch, the High
School Director, had the same idea we did. So, last
winter 2009, we started a LifeGroup for students
with special needs in the high school ministry. We
have five amazing teens, all involved in Capernaum
as well, that come every week. At first it was difficult
to get them to talk to each other, let alone discuss
the message. Now a year later it’s a night-and-day
difference. Our teens are so much more open with
each other and share very insightful things. They
are learning how to interact with the other teens
in the high school group and the other students
are making a distinct effort to get to know our
LifeGroup. We even entered the high school music
video competition held at the annual high school
Christmas party. Not only did our group become
closer through filming the video, but the response
from the other high school students marked one of
my favorite memories here at Calvary. It brought
tears to my eyes to see 200 high school students
cheering for our little group, who prior to the
forming of our LifeGroup were unnoticed.

This ministry may be small at our church right now,

but it’s truly life-changing. I hope I can bless these

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD and WOMEN’S MINISTRIES

Operation Christmas Child project hosted by our Women’s Bible Study was a huge success! Our project was
designed to help disadvantaged children in desperate situations around the world discover the true meaning of
Christmas and the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Through the giving and generous hearts of Calvary
women in the Bible Study, the goal we set was substantially exceeded. Over 125 shoe boxes were filled with toys,
hygiene products, school products, candy and the gospel message. In addition to the 40 Bible study ladies in
attendance helping, we had others that also showed up to
enjoy the pot luck. Over $875 was donated, which covered
the cost of shipping the boxes worldwide. Because of our
giving, loving, Calvary women who opened their hearts
and their pocketbooks, children around the world will see
tangible evidence that not only does God unconditionally
love them, but that they are not forgotten and that He loves
them though His disciples around the world.
