Curry shines as
UNC falters late

DURHAM — Tyler Zeller sat with a Gatorade towel
draped across his body.
The junior had won big at Duke. He had lost even
bigger at Duke. But this had never happened.
Up by as many as 16 in the first half, North Carolina
couldn’t keep a lead that seemed too good to be true as
UNC fell 79-73 to the Blue Devils.
“Personally it hurts more this year,” Zeller said.
“Obviously, my freshman year we were ecstatic. Last year
they dominated us the whole game. Tonight we should
have won. We shouldn’t have given them the opportuni-
ties we did.”
Zeller did everything he could in the 32 minutes he
saw on the floor. He posted a team-

BASKETBALL and grabbed 13 rebounds, seven of
UNC 73 which were offensive. He led the Tar
Duke  79 Heel charge down low as UNC out-
scored Duke 48-24 in the paint.
But the Tar Heel intensity that helped UNC to an 8-0
start to the game was lacking as the teams came out of
intermission. The first half saw 43 UNC points to Duke’s
29, as Zeller was just a rebound shy of a double-double.
Kendall Marshall, coming off the biggest game of his
career against Florida State, dished out four assists in
the first half, three of which were to Zeller and John
Henson. The big men helped UNC to 28 points in the
paint in the first half.
“I love playing with him,” Zeller said. “He gets easy
layups for me. He’s a great player and a great passer.”
Outside of Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler, Duke
couldn’t come up with any kind of offensive production
in the first half. The Blue Devils got only 10 points out-
side of the duo in the first half.
Seth Curry would change that.
Whereas Smith and Singler had been the only emer-
gency boats on a sinking vessel for Duke, Curry came
along with life vests for all the Blue Devils.
Curry posted 18 second-half points in front of the
Cameron crowd, going 6-for-8 in the second frame. His
boost brought Duke back into contention, and Ryan
Kelly’s 3-pointer with 9:14 left put Duke in the driver’s
seat for the first time all game.
“Seth Curry was big to say the least,” UNC coach Roy
Williams said. “Nolan was a load, driving to the basket
and getting in the lane and making plays.”
He had to step up for a Duke team that typically
depends on Singler and Smith for scoring. While Smith
eventually poured in 34 points for a game-high, Singler
was held in check the entire night by Harrison Barnes.

Dismiss lawsuit

In addressing the Student
Supreme Court on Wednesday, the
man who wants to release student
election results rehashed his argu-
ment: that nobody can challenge
Ian Lee’s candidacy almost two
months after it was ruled legal.
Now, it’s up to the court to
decide whether that’s a solid argu-
ment.
In a formal filing answering
allegations by former Student
Congress speaker Deanna Santoro,
Andrew Phillips, chairman of the
Board of Elections, requested that
the court not hear the case while
repeating several of the arguments
he made in his motion to dismiss
it.
Santoro resigned as speaker on
Monday to sue the board for allow-
ing Lee to run for student body
president without stepping down
from his position as student body
secretary — which she said is pro-
hibited by the Student Code.
Jessica Womack, the court’s chief
justice, said there will be no deci-
sion on whether to hold a pre-trial
hearing until she receives briefs
from both parties by 5 p.m. today.
Phillips said Santoro did not file
the complaint within the 96-hour
window for challenging a decision.
The board ruled to allow Lee’s
candidacy on Dec. 13, but Santoro
said a conversation with Phillips
on Sunday renewed her ability to
file.
Phillips dismissed that argu-
ment, writing in his response that
the conversation marked an “ill-
guided effort to revive an other-
wise belated action.”

Duke Blue Devils wouldn’t allow their heated
rivals from down Tobacco Road to come into
their house and dominate as thoroughly as
North Carolina did in the first half of No. 5
Duke’s 79-73 win on Wednesday without a
challenge.
That is exactly what happened – down
43-29 at half, the Blue Devils stormed out of
the gates, mounting an 8-0 run that put Duke
back in the game.
From there, the Tar Heels never recovered.

UNC professor wins new
writers award for narrative
Randi Davenport, executive direc-
tor of the James M. Johnston Center
for Undergraduate Excellence at
UNC, has received the 2011 Great
Lakes Colleges Association New
Writers Award.
Davenport’s book, “The Boy Who
Loved Tornadoes: A Mother’s Story,”
is a narrative about her challenges as
the mother of an autistic son. It won
in the creative nonfiction category.
The award goes to new authors’
first published volumes of poetry,
fiction or creative nonfiction.
Davenport, who is also an
adjunct faculty member in the
department of English and com-
parative literature, will go on tour
to GLCA member colleges as part
of the award. She will speak to stu-
dents and faculty about her book.
The book has been praised by The
Los Angeles Times and Publisher’s
Weekly reviewers, among others.
UNC graduate honored with
regional award for teaching
UNC graduate Callie Smith, a
first-grade teacher at Bogue Sound
Elementary School in Newport,
has been chosen as the Southeast
Region’s Teacher of the Year.
Smith, one of nine teachers
around the state to gain a regional
distinction, is a North Carolina
Teaching Fellow.
She was named the 2010-11
Carteret County Public School
System Teacher of the Year in May,
after which she became a regional
finalist.
She was visited at her school
by N.C. Department of Public
Instruction judges, who observed
her in her classroom.
Smith majored in elementary
education and biology at UNC.
She has also taught in Raleigh and
Durham.
Students, Thorp participate
in national innovation talk
UNC students and Chancellor
Holden Thorp participated in a
digital town hall talk titled “Finding
Work, Finding Our Way: Building
the Economy & Jobs of the Future”
on Wednesday.
The forum, which was spon-
sored by Microsoft and hosted by
The Atlantic Magazine, was held in
Washington, D.C.
It featured industry experts
such as Treasury Secretary Tim
Geithner, Federal Communications
Commission Chairman Julius
Genachowski and Virginia Gov.
Bob McDonnell, who answered
questions asked by students from
UNC and Miami University of
Ohio, who participated in the
forum by webcast.
Shruti Shah, a senior who was
one of six students to participate
from UNC, said that the event was
both interesting and pertinent to
college students, especially those
entering the job market amidst a
challenging economy.
“I’m a senior,” she said. “I have a
job, but a lot of my friends do not.”
Shah said that the panelists
­—including Thorp — talked about
the importance of innovation in
improving the economy, an issue
she said should be addressed.
“It was an honor to be a part of
it,” she said.
Shah said UNC students submit-
ted videos showcasing entrepre-
neurship at the University, which
were posted on The Atlantic web-
site prior to the event.

NCAA upholds its ruling on
player McAdoo’s ineligibility
The NCAA has upheld its deci-
sion of permanent ineligibility
for junior defensive end Michael
McAdoo.
“We appealed this decision
because we believed it was unfair
and we continue to believe that,”
UNC athle tic direc tor Dick
Baddour said in a press release.
The University is still working
with the NCAA to resolve the pend-
ing case involving current football
student-athlete Devon Ramsay.

Organizations fight poverty
through social media game
Urban Ministries of Durham
and the McKinney advertising
agency have teamed up to launch
the online game SPENT, which
uses social media to educate people
about poverty, homelessness and
the non-profit organization.
To play, log onto http://play-
spent.org. Gamers will be chal-
lenged to make it through the
month on their last $1,000, after
losing their job and home while
learning about how changes in
employment, housing, medical
costs and other expenses can cre-
ate unexpected shortfalls.
The game also allows users to

Plymale sentenced for cocaine Perdue:
Sentence is harsher
than co-defendant’s

Jonathan Ray Plymale, a defen-
dant in a 2009 cocaine bust that
contributed to a University review
of the Greek system, was sentenced
to nearly two years in jail Tuesday.
Plymale, 24, was sentenced to 20
months in jail plus five years of pro-
bation, after pleading guilty to sev-
eral charges, including felony con-
spiracy to traffic cocaine, trafficking
cocaine and maintaining a dwelling
for keeping a controlled substance.
That sentence was relatively
lenient because he immediately
cooperated with the investiga-
tion, said Orange County District
Attorney Jim Woodall.
“The standard punishment is
35 to 42 months,” he said. “The
judge deviated from that because
the judge found that Mr. Plymale

UNC-system students
take issues to capital

RALEIGH — As drastic budget cuts
loom, student government leaders from
across the state beset the N.C. General
Assembly Wednesday to plead for minimal
cuts to the UNC -system schools.
At its annual Students Day at the
Capitol, the UNC Association of Student
Governments, a collection of delegates
from all 17 UNC-system schools, discussed
the system’s funding with lawmakers as they
begin to search for areas to cut.

allowing for a Union renovation
fee to go on the ballot.
The response comes after the
Student Supreme Court enjoined
to delay the release of election
results.
Their answer claims that those
who brought the suit lacked stand-
ing to challenge their decision.
Medlin and Phillips requested
that the court deny the plaintiffs’
demands for a court decision and
lift the injunction.
Jessica Womack, chief justice of
the court, said the court is waiting
until the briefs submission dead-
line passes at 5 p.m. today before
discussing the suit.
Medlin and Phillips denied all
but two of the seven allegations
against them. They said they were
without knowledge of one and
admitted to another in part.

Plymale made a full confession to
police and provided information
regarding the addresses and other
details for four local drug dealers
in Burlington and Chapel Hill.
Efforts to act on that information
were inhibited by the community’s
awareness of Plymale’s arrest, court
documents state.
Plymale was arrested Sept. 15,
2009, after a police informant
bought cocaine from him at the
Chancellor Square apartment of
Eliza Vaughan. She was sentenced to
36 months of probation in October.
Woodall said Vaughan received a
lighter sentence primarily because
she was tried by a different judge,
although they faced roughly the
same charges.
Police found 76.8 grams of
cocaine at Vaughan’s apartment
at 211 Church St. They later found
about 121 grams of the drug in
Plymale’s apartment in a building
associated with the UNC chapter

these claims, saying that the refer-
endum does not apply to all aspects
of election law, some of which they
deemed vague.
“While the plaintiffs have iden-
tified the relevant portion of the
Student Code, the plaintiffs failed to
demonstrate how they were directly
and adversely affected by the elec-
tion act,” Medlin and Phillips wrote.
“Simply citing the Student Code is
not adequate in establishing stan-
dards.”
That’s similar to the action
Phillips took with regard to the
injunction to delay release of
the student body president elec-
tion results. Phillips said plaintiff
Deanna Santoro, the former speak-
er of Student Congress, lacked

Combined with the death of
Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity
President Courtland Smith earlier
in the year, administrators gave
the Greek system more scrutiny
and are considering new rules for
fraternities and sororities.
But despite the attention the
arrests garnered, officials say the
amount seized — while certainly
large — was not out of the ordinary.
“The only thing that made this
unique to people was that they were
students or former students and
selling to other students,” Woodall
said. “We’ve had other cases than
this that were much bigger.”
Chapel Hill Police spokesman
Kevin Gunter said the amount of
drugs seized was “unprecedented”
for an investigation involving most-
ly college students. But Gunter said
he didn’t think the busts spoke for
the University or Greek system as
a whole.
“Everyone’s been very receptive and some
have been very realistic in saying there’s
no money for increased education fund-
ing,” said Jared Hopkins, vice president of
student government at Western Carolina
University.
“We just tried to emphasize the impor-
tance of higher education and that there’s a
direct relationship between education fund-
ing and unemployment in North Carolina.”

In the UCommons case, Medlin
and Phillips were accused of not
responding to complaints of elec-
tion law violations during the cam-
paign. If passed, the referendum
would have raised student fees by
$16 each year for 30 years, begin-
ning in the 2011-12 academic year,
to pay for renovations.
Medlin and Phillips said the
complaints against the UCommons
referendum were not in violation
of the code.
Phillips said that in the case of
election controversies, injunctions
are common.
“That’s what the plaintiffs asked
for and that’s what they got,”
Phillips said.
Horowitz said he had no doubt
that the case would move forward.
“I am confident that the injunc-
tion will not be dismissed and that it
will go to hearing,” Horowitz said.
Tyler Mills, president of the
Carolina Union Activities Board,
said he does not mind waiting for
the decision since construction of
UCommons will not immediately
be taking place.
“We definitely would like to hear
for some peace of mind,” he said.

“We really took a hard look at the
people in our chapters, who you want
representing you,” he said. “I’m of the
belief that we should take every event
and try to turn it into a positive.”

Debate access,

Students from the UNC School
of Law will meet at noon today
to discuss how to balance stu-
dent safety and public access to
University facilities in response to
two instances of trespassing last
week.
School officials contacted the
Department of Public Safety twice
last week after students com-
plained about trespassers on the
school’s grounds.
Police issued one trespasser a
warning and arrested the other
after a background check showed
multiple warrants for his arrest.
The incident has sparked a larg-
er conversation about how much
access the public should have to
campus institutions.
As a public institution, the
University cannot prevent mem-
bers of the community from using
the library and other facilities, but
students want to talk about ways
they can improve safety.

on budget cuts, Gov. Bev Perdue
announced good news for the state
— especially for the UNC system.
Perdue said in a YouTube
video Wednesday that the state’s
expected budget shortfall could be
$1 billion less than the predicted
$3.7 billion, which means cuts to
state institutions — including the
University system — might not be
as severe as expected.
But the board will continue its
discussion regarding the budget
today among other issues ranging
from tuition to campus safety.
Here are some of the big items
on the agenda:
n  The board will continue to
plan for the upcoming cuts in state
funding.
The system has been prepar-
ing for up to 15 percent cuts.
Furloughs, layoffs and early retire-
ment incentives for tenured faculty
are all on the table.
Thousands of course sections
system-wide and entire degree
programs and departments could
also be slashed.
The UNC system has lost $575
million in state funding in the last
three years. The majority of those
cuts were on the administrative
side, so this year universities are
being forced to take on the aca-
demic side.
n The board is also working
toward changing the way it funds
enrollment growth for universities.
Former President Erskine Bowles
recommended linking enrollment
funding to graduation and reten-
tion rates.
Through this recommendation,
the system plans to ask the N.C.
General Assembly for $45.8 mil-
lion for 2011-12.
UNC-Pembroke will not be
allowed to increase the size of
its freshman class, and UNC-
Greensboro and Western Carolina
University will face restricted
growth.
n  Tuition proposals for all 16
campuses will be voted on to send
to the N.C. General Assembly for
final approval.
The proposed increase for
undergraduate residents at UNC-
CH is $313.
n  The system will also begin to
prepare for a decrease in federal
Pell Grants for the 2011-12 fiscal
year because it would put a greater
burden on the state’s resources for
need-based aid.
n The board is also recommend-
ing that the budget for UNC-CH
be reduced by $158,225 for the
current fiscal year because the
University exceeded the number of
out-of-state freshman it is allowed
to enroll.

Norman and Thomas to lead Campus Y

Though they’ve only worked
together for three weeks while
campaigning, the Campus Y’s new
co-presidents say they complement
each other perfectly.
“My weaknesses match up with
her strengths, so we’re a perfect
match,” said Allison Norman, half
of the Campus Y’s new presidential
pairing.
The other half of the self-pro-
claimed “dream team” is Mackenzie
Thomas. Both have been familiar
faces in Campus Y, with Norman
being involved for three years and
Thomas for two.
‘Black Watch’ takes Iraq
War to Memorial Hall

Memorial Hall is being
stormed.
Each night this weekend, 12
Scottish actors will take the stage to
try to tackle the story of the Black
Watch battalion in the Iraq War.
Presented by the National
Theatre of Scotland as a part of
the Carolina Performing Arts
International Theater Festival,
“Black Watch” aims to capture
what it means to be a part of a
military deployment.
The Black Watch, a branch of
the Royal Regiment of Scotland,
became known after a controver-
sial deployment to Iraq in 2003.
The battalion was sent against the
will of British Parliament to aid U.S.
troops near Baghdad. Three of its
members were killed by a car bomb,
making the controversial deploy-
ment infamous in Great Britain.
The play’s writer, Gregory
Burke, conducted interviews with
about 50 of the Scottish soldiers,
laying out the emotional founda-
tion for the play.
“ The play is so important
because I think we have a ten-
dency to depersonalize war,” said

“I started getting involved with
Campus Y right after Carolina
Kickoff and I just went from there,”
Thomas said.
The pair chose each other as
running mates three weeks ago
and have been working on plans for
their administration ever since.
“We ran unopposed so we didn’t
have much of a campaign,” Norman
said. “We spent that time discuss-
ing our ideas and planning for the
next year.”
The duo has several goals for
next year. They say they want to
focus on helping students better
understand what Campus Y is.
“We want to make sure that
the arts.
“The theater has a very unique
and powerful ability to remind us
that these stories are real and that
the soldiers who go and fight for
our freedom are real.”
Though all the actors are Scottish,
the play is written to represent all
soldiers in war, Kang said.
In addition to performing, the
cast and crew will visit four or five
classes at UNC, Michelle Bordner,
director of artist relations for the
office of the executive director of
the arts, wrote in an e-mail.
Members of the ensemble will
discuss their careers as well as the
play’s creation and its importance in
the modern world, Bordner said.
Since its debut in 2006, “Black
Watch” has generally featured an
older cast. But for this tour, direc-
tor John Tiffany cast men in their
twenties instead.
“These actors are exactly the
ages of soldiers that would be there
overseas,” Kang said.

manager for “Black Watch,” said
that the play uses special produc-
tion techniques — few of which
could be disclosed.

“The piece doesn’t try to push
political points too hard,” Swallow
said.
Kang said the play is instead a
reminder that soldiers are human.
“They are not robots,” he said.
“They are our sons and daughters
and nieces and nephews.”

Americans rate Obama higher in handling foreign a≠airs

Americans generally give the
president worse marks for his han-
dling of domestic issues than for
how he deals with foreign affairs,
according to a Gallup poll released
Wednesday.
With the 2012 presidential
election cycle beginning to pick up
momentum, the poll found that
Obama was rated worse on key
voter issues such as his handling
Elizabeth McCain, a current
Campus Y co-president, said
Norman and Thomas come from
different backgrounds — but their
differences will mesh well.

volunteering and community per-
spective, while Mackenzie has had

Cissokho recalls a time when, dur-
ing a stint abroad, he and a friend
went to play a show at a restaurant.
After a while, Cissokho noticed a
man in the audience listening to
his songs and crying.
During a break, Cissokho
approached the man and asked
why he was crying. The man
replied that he had a girlfriend
who he loved very much, even
though she was always stringing
him along. He told Cissokho he
heard him singing about love, and
it made him cry. Yet Cissokho, who
is Senagalese, was singing in his
native Manding.
“This man couldn’t understand
any of the words of my song, but
from the sound of the music, the
tone and the melody — from my
body language and facial expres-
sions, my language didn’t matter.
He could hear my message in this
song despite the language,” says
Cissokho. “This is what I love about
West African music.”
Audience members will get to
experience a similar dissolution
of cultural and language barriers
Friday night during The Senegal
Connection, an event celebrating
of Senegal at the Nightlight.
The show will also feature
Chapel Hill’s The Lizzy Ross Band
and The Brand New Life, a band
from Greensboro that creates
world-music fusion.
With the recent addition of
Mamadou Mbengue, a West African
musician known for his skill on the
talking drum, The Brand New Life
has added Mbengue’s West African
influences to the sound. Bassist
Seth Barden of The Brand New
Life is the principal coordinator
for the event.
The event is also a showcase for
the kora, the 21-stringed instru-
ment that is sometimes described
as a cross between a harp and a
lute.
Cissokho has been playing the
kora since he was six years old,
and he says that while the kora has
always had an important place in
traditional celebrations, it has only
recently found a place in Senagalese
popular music.
In Senegal, Cissokho was born
into a family of Manding griots,
the musician caste. Mande society
holds the griot to be a historian,
advisor, praise-singer and storytell-

If you’ve procrastinated on com-
ing up with Valentine’s Day week-
end plans, fear not. On Friday
night, Chapel Hill’s Birds and
Arrows will offer fans a preview
of their upcoming record, “We’re
Gonna Run.” The band aims to
make it a Carrboro date night,
as the evening falls on the same
evening as the town’s monthly
ArtWalk.
This week, Dive staff writer
Allison Hussey sat down with hus-
band-wife duo Andrea and Pete
Connolly and cellist Josh Starmer
to chat about this weekend’s upcom-
ing show.
Diversions: For the pre-
sale, you buy a ticket and get a digi-
tal download to five new songs and
a handmade piece of art. Why did
you decide to incentivize it?
Andrea Connolly :
I think it’s because we always
really enjoy adding artwork onto
our music anyway, and then in a
scene that’s full of amazing bands
where people have twenty choices,
you have to incentivize somehow,
because there’s so many choices.
Pete Connolly: You have
to have something to step it up.
AC: And we want people to
remain excited about the record.
I think because we know we have
to sit on these tracks that we’ve
recorded and that we’re really excit-
ed about for a few more months
while they’re being manufactured,
we can’t wait to share them. We
want people to hear them.
PC: Maybe not so much a few
months as like a month and a
half.
AC: Well, two months, and
that’s a long time to sit and wait
and wonder what people are going
to think when you get them out
there. And the artwork — Pete’s
a painter and I paint as well, and
we just thought it would be more
fun instead of just handing you a
download card, handing them an
individual piece of art. We’re at

made so far, so we’re still working.
Josh Starmer: This is how
I see it. I didn’t have any input on
this on the art aspect, but to me I
see it as sort of like — the Birds and

Sanctum
As a universal truth in the movie
industry, the surest way to prede-
termine the quality of a film is to
look and see if a producer is heavily
advertised within the trailer.
Generally, this is done to com-
pensate for an otherwise poor
movie.
Such is the case with Sanctum, in
which “James Cameron,” “Titanic”
and “Avatar” are some of the first
things to appear during advertise-
ments.
Unfortunately, the only thing
“Sanctum” shares with these sig-
nificantly better films is the use of
the color blue.
In what is undeniably another
quick cash into the infectious
3-D craze, “Sanctum” follows the
descent of five uninteresting char-
acters into a massive underground
cave in New Guinea. Only as a
colossal storm begins to flood and
displace the oxygen within the cave

No such

that’s what the National
Organization for Women
says you should do. Its ongo-
ing campaign for positive body
image encourages women to see
through the smoke and mirrors
and Photoshop used in the media,
and to celebrate their own natural
bodies. But has anyone told you
lately to love your vagina?
As the demand for genital
cosmetic surgery rises, it is grow-
ing clearer that body image no
longer applies to just breast size
or waistline.
Some women are now feeling
pressure to change their genitals
to conform to an ideal.
And now the $64,000 ques-
tion: What are these ideal female
genitals?
Vanessa Shick of Indiana
University sought to answer this
very query in the latest Journal
of Sex Research, and where else
could she turn but fellow journal
Playboy Magazine?
Schick analyzed 647 monthly
centerfolds from Playboy, dat-
ing back to their first issue in
December 1953. In addition to
scoring each model’s general phy-
sique, she assessed visibility of
the mons pubis (pubic mound),
the pubic hair and the labia
majora/minora.
At first, none of the centerfolds
showed the mons pubis or the
labia, but in the 1970s, this started
to change as the magazine dis-
played the mons pubis with natu-
ral pubic hair. Then the 1990s saw
a shift toward pubic hair partially
removed by shaving or waxing.
Since centerfolds with visible
labia only appeared recently,
Schick had to narrow down her
search to photographs between
2007 and 2008 which show the
mons pubis.
Out of 185 pictures, 19.5 per-
cent showed altered but visible
pubic hair, and 61.2 percent did
not show any pubic hair: It was
completely removed.
Less than half had visible labia
majora, and within these, 82.2 per-
cent showed no labia minora. The
labia minora were visible in only 13
photos, and they were all colored
pink or light red except in one.
It seems that the standard of
female genital beauty, as adver-
tised to Playboy’s mostly male
readers, includes minimal or no
pubic hair, invisible labia minora,
and pink color. The problem lies
in the fact that these features
which are seemingly normative
in the models are totally unnatu-
ral in the real world population.
Women’s genitals vary greatly
in size, shape, color and amount
of hair, and they even change
over time.
The promotion of these unre-
alistic images — and a lack of
education or exposure other-
wise — can cause some women
to think that their genitals are
abnormal or ugly, and that they
need genital cosmetic surgery
like labiaplasty or vaginoplasty.
These procedures are not
medically necessary, accord-
ing to the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists,
and they carry risks like infec-
tion, scarring, pain or dryness
which can later compromise
sexual health and function.
I am not saying that no one
should be allowed to get genital
cosmetic surgery; it’s not my
place to make that call. But
women should not be fooled into
believing that there is a typical or
ideal form to the female genitals.
Let’s appreciate their diversity.
After all, how boring would a
one-vagina world be?

If the University is that con-
cerned about whether those
students who are exempt by
exam deserve their exemptions,
it ought to make the qualifica-
tions for exemption more strin-
gent. If the current exams do
not test what the University
feels is important, it ought to
mandate its own.
And if professors still don’t
feel that a student is writing well,
they shouldn’t be afraid to let the
student’s grade reflect that fact.
There are numerous resources
that students can turn to for
help in the form of the Writing
Center, peer tutoring or even
choosing to take a writing class.
The tools are available to
ensure that those who need
instruction get it. There’s no
need to punish everyone.

This year’s SBP election
disgraceful, must improve
TO THE EDITOR:
After four wonderful years
here, UNC has found a large cor-
ner in my heart, so as a graduat-
ing senior, I would like to express
my concern for the future of this
great university. The strength
of our university lies within our
student body, with our student
government and student body
president acting as our repre-
sentatives.
However, the past few days
of election drama has shown
that our student government is
in shambles. We have a lawsuit
brought against the Board of
Elections and SBP candidates
blatantly breaking rules and
using disgraceful tactics to run
campaigns. One of my house-
mates commented today, “Look
how far we’ve come from Eve
Carson. She was the best stu-
dent body president we’ve seen
in our four years.” And I must say
I wholeheartedly agree with this
statement.
Eve was an SBP who fought
and cared for the student body
and acted with integrity. She
earned her votes from the stu-
dent body and brought respect to
student government. So look at
where we are today. It’s disheart-
ening to know that this is the last
SBP election I will participate in
and it leaves me wondering, with
a lack of confidence, if the future
SBP will do anything for the stu-
dent body.
We deserve and demand an
SBP who will make promises he
or she can keep, someone who
will act for and with us. This
election has been disgraceful.
So to the future student leaders,
student government and student
body president: watch yourself.

It is time to overthrow
our student government
TO THE EDITOR:
It is time all students get on
up, get into it and get involved
by overthrowing student gov-
ernment. Clearly this campaign
season is a mockery of any dem-
ocratic voting process. Student
government’s paternalistic
and elitist attitude toward the
University community is unac-
ceptable. No longer shall we
stand by the wayside while they
demand rooms in the Union, ride
around on horses that defecate
in the Pit (UNC Housekeeping
loved that), choke our freedom
of choice down to a set of pre-
screened options and fail epically
at achieving a civil representa-
tive government. As BOE does
not take its own bylaws seriously
and frivolous lawsuits are filed
(misogyny is not frivolous by any
means, don’t get misconstrued)
only to steal an election, it is time
for the students of UNC to end
this mess and take our university
back. Oh, and go to hell Dook!

displeasure with the ridiculous
nature of this year’s campaign
for student body president.
After reading The Daily Tar
Heel’s coverage of the campaign,
I could not cast a ballot for any of
the SBP candidates in good con-
science. A number of the ideas
tossed about by all of the candi-
dates, per usual, are ridiculous
and are not feasible.
Further, I read about the Board
of Elections hearing at which the
disqualification of Rick Ingram
was considered. The hearing
was described as “bizarre” and
was centered on the candidate
campaigning in a “malicious and
harmful manner.”
My sincere hope is that the
article is a parody of actual
events; this is not a middle
school popularity contest.
Frankly, we’re all adults and
need to act like it. I find it dif-
ficult to take any of these con-
cerns seriously and I am fearful
for the future of my country if
these are the political leaders of
tomorrow.
Additionally, I read that
candidate Ian Lee is in direct
violation of the Student Code.
The incompetence of the BOE
continues a trend of ineptitude
stretching back for years.
Candidates: thanks but no
thanks, I hope you resign on
your first day and appoint Butch
Davis.

Help children by being a
counselor at Camp Kesem
TO THE EDITOR:
This week you have the oppor-
tunity to change your life and the
lives of countless children. You
have the chance to apply to be a
Camp Kesem counselor.
Camp Kesem is a free one-
week camp for children whose
parents have or had cancer and is
run entirely by Duke University
and UNC students. It’s also the
best thing that I’ve done with my
college career.
Last summer 117 campers and
60 counselors spent the week
having fun playing messy games,
going on dinosaur egg hunts and
doing all the other things every
kid should get to experience at
camp, no matter what’s going on
at home.
As one camper described it,
“Camp Kesem is more than just
a camp … it’s a time to laugh,
smile, cry and share each other’s
deepest fears. When I think of
Camp Kesem, I couldn’t describe
it better than a place of true joy
and love and friendships to
remember forever.”
Camp Kesem is tabling in the
Pit today. You can stop by and
ask previous counselors about
their experience and get more
information.
