Benchmark – Reflection of Professional Development Session

This presentation is titled State and District Academic Standards and Professional

Development. The learning objectives that are covered in this presentation are teachers will be

able to buffer distractions, eliminate unnecessary free time, and maintain control of the

classroom. It states the agenda of the presentation including a time frame, and covers different

activities for the three learning objectives listed, these activities will be shown or have the

attendees participate in to learn new ways to accomplish the three objectives. After creating this

presentation, I was able to present it to four different staff members, the principal, and three

teachers. The feedback that I was able to get back from them was constructive and insightful,

they all liked the presentation my first two viewers gave me suggestion on things that I could add

or fix in the presentation such as what exactly was going to be covered in the course right in the

beginning so the teachers would know what they were going to be learning about and what was

expected out of them at the end of the course. Some other feedback that I was able to obtain

during these presentations was that it was a well presented presentation and that it would be one

that they would like to be used at their school, one of the most commented parts of the

presentation was the last fifteen minutes was dedicated to open discussion so the teachers could

share what they got form the course as well as things that they thought could be added to go

along with different strategies that were presented.

The professional development presentation I created aligns with the school’s mission and

vision because it increases the capacity of staff is by developing and teaching the existing staff

new skills and strategies of teaching, as well as teaching them how to cope with the things that

come up and do not go as planned and assisting them in setting realistic expectations for their

school year [ CITATION Bru101 \l 1033 ]. The session also promotes students learning because

the session is student centered.

Technology was used during the presentation by way of a power point presentation and a

survey was presented to the viewers via email. The technology that was used effectively and

appropriately to support both teaching and learning because the power point presentation was a

teaching tool and at the same time was a learning tool for those who were visual, learners as well

auditory, and hands on because they were able to see what was being discussed, hear me talk

about what was on the slides and have hands on activities that was included on the slides to assist

in their learning [ CITATION Jon03 \l 1033 ].

As a principal a way that I would follow up on what was learned in the professional

development course is being implemented in the classroom is by observing the classroom and the

teacher teaching. Ask for feedback from students, examine teachers plans for the classroom

[ CITATION Miz101 \l 1033 ].

Some ways that I will stay current with upcoming trends as well as be prepared for the

next generation of students and teachers is by doing a lot of research such as reading educational

blogs, educational newsletters, social media, and attending as many professional development

courses as I can on educational trends. I would then apply this knowledge to my teachers through

professional development and to the students of the school through the teachers and what they

have learned.

While preparing for my presentation with the four staff members I looked the

presentation over several times, presented it for myself, as well as presented it to my family and

got their feedback on things they thought I did well and needed to work on. When presenting the

presentation, I was a little nervous at first but once I began talking and sharing I believe that my

confidence during the presentation was about an eight in a scale from one to ten. I was

immediately comfortable and was ready and excited to share my knowledge with these teachers

to help them in their classroom with ways to buffer distractions, eliminate unnecessary free time,

and maintain control of the classroom. This was a great experience for me and gave me a taste of

what it is like to lead a school’s professional development course as well as ways to plan for my

future professional development course with my own staff.
