Logistics Management ……..

• Logistics Management is that part of Supply

implements, and controls the efficient,
effective forward and reverse flow and
storage of goods, services and related
information between the point of origin
and the point of consumption in order to
meet customers' requirements.

… while Supply Chain Management

• Supply Chain Management encompasses the

planning and management of all activities involved
in sourcing and procurement, conversion, and all
Logistics Management activities.
• Importantly, it also includes coordination and
collaboration with channel partners, which can be
suppliers, intermediaries, third-party service
providers, and customers.
• In essence, Supply Chain Management integrates
supply and demand management within and
across companies.

INDIA LOGISTICS SCENARIO
• A significant yet lesser-noticed activity that forms the backbone of almost all
sectors is the Logistics and Supply Chain sector.
• With India's gross domestic profit growing at over 9% per year the Indian logistics
industry is expected to reach a market size of over $125 billion in year 2010.
• Logistics Industry
– 13% of Indian GDP
– Highly Fragmented
– Origin of 3PL industry after MNC’s stepping in 90’s & rapid growth after year 2000
• Factors driving 3PL
– VAT
– Increased focus of Government on improving Infrastructure
– Increasing MNC’s & Indian companies realizing logistics functions

INDIA SUPPLY CHAIN TRENDS
• Organizations are in various stages of maturity, however by
majority they can be clubbed in the following phases and time
zones :
• Phase 1: Concept Stage
– Till 2003 the logistics was still a concept with a majority of
Indian companies. It was a good “concept” but could not be
applied to “us”
• Phase 2 : The Acceptance
– In the last 2 years , the logistics has moved into the board
room and CEO’s are “concerned”. The bottlenecks are : lack
of clarity induced by the knowledge-gap in the service users ;
the “transport” mindset of service providers.
Integrated Supply Chain Solutions 7
• Phase 3: The Understanding
– With a mix of outsourced consulting, in-house strategizing
coupled with a dose of VAT and Service tax , the next 12
months will see a firm plan developing in the Industry
leaders.
• Phase 4 : The Implementation
– The most critical part …is also likely to the most hurried
part ! The first movers will have an advantage of time
which is the luxury ill afforded in globally competitive
markets.
