Vocabulary Strategy Awareness & Explanation (Purpose for selecting the strategy)
How will provide students with a clear picture of the why and how?

Provide an example and discuss how roots can help understand the meaning of a word
students are not familiar with. Fill out a Fray Chart together as a class.
Vocabulary Strategy Procedure-the “how-to”
Detail how you will introduce the vocabulary concept rooted in Latin/Greek roots, how you will propel
understanding of the generative use of these roots, and finally, how you will establish the proficiency of
the objective through an effective closing that can be assessed.

The greek roots will be introduced by explaining how greek roots are helpful for understanding the
meaning of unfamiliar words by knowing the meaning of the root. An understanding of the roots will
be done as a whole class by filling in a Fray Chart of a greek root. To Check for understanding of the
Greek Roots a google doc will be made for each student to fill in in their groups, that will be shared
with the class afterwards.
Peer Reflection: Enlist your partner in assessing your vocabulary activity in depth. Reflect on their
assessment before implementing the activity in your digital learning experience. (optional
implementation) They will be looking at a few factors:

1. A discipline-specific topic is identified and a clear and creative vocabulary activity is

created for one or two Latin or Greek roots.
2. The activity builds generative knowledge and allows the student to think critically about
the words.
Have your peer write a 1-2 paragraph detailed reflection about your strategy based on their own self-
assessment. (Please ask them to be honest as any critiques should be welcomed and reciprocated.
Additionally, your assessment does not impact their grade.)
● How did the structure of this strategy support learning in their discipline specifically?
● What were their strengths and areas for growth (please consider both their planning and your
instruction of the strategy).

Vocabulary Task
For this vocabulary task activity An example of a fray chart will be provided on the board as
a class before they get into groups to fill out their own charts. We will review how lots of
words that we use everyday originate from Greek roots, and help to decipher the meaning
of words that we haven't seen before because we know the meaning of the Greek Root.
Going through the chart i'll explain that the middle will have the greek root and each of the
four corners will have the definition, examples, using it in a sentence, and a picture of some
of the examples. Students will be put into groups and given a Greek Root word to fill out in
a Fray chart. Each group will be given one of the greek roots aqua, dem, path, and geo.
Students will fill in the chart as a group and provide as many examples as they can. Once
they have been given some time. Each group will share as a class, their chart as the other
groups write down in their notes, asking any questions when each group is finished. This
will be accessed through a google doc with each groups chart.
