Chapter 2
Wireless Data Transmission
Lecture Notes
Overview
Chapter 2 explains various wireless data transmission techniques. Students will learn
how network data is represented using binary notation. Chapter 2 also lists and explains
the two types of wireless transmission. Finally, students will study the basic concepts
and techniques through which data can be transmitted by radio waves.
Objectives
• Explain how network data is represented using binary notation
• List and explain the two types of wireless transmission
• Illustrate the basic concepts and techniques through which data can be transmitted by
radio waves

Additional Projects
1. Write a method to convert a number in Base 10 to its representation in Base 2. Then,
write a method to convert a number in Base 2 to its representation in Base 10. Finally,
test your methods and convert the number 1024 in Base 10 to Base 2 and the number
1001111001 in Base 2 to Base 10. What are the results?
2. Use the Internet to research for other digital modulation techniques besides the
techniques explained in this chapter.

Key Terms
American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) — An arbitrary
coding scheme that uses the numbers from 0 to 255.
amplitude — The height of a carrier wave.
amplitude modulation (AM) — A change in the height of the cycle.
amplitude shift keying (ASK) — A binary modulation technique whereby 1 bit has a
carrier signal while a 0 bit has no signal.
