CNS 2224 – LAN Switching


v5.0 Fall 2008

I. PREREQUISITE:

Successful completion of CNS 1220 and 1221 (meeting Cisco’s


requirements) or currently certified as a Cisco Certified Networking
Associate (CCNA).

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course develops those advanced skills necessary to design, build,


and maintain small to medium-size multilayer switched networks. The
course will follow elements of the Cisco Certified Network Professional
program. Activities will offer a balance between classroom and
laboratory work.

III. CREDIT: 4 Semester hours; Lecture 3 hours, Lab 2 hours.


IV. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to meet the
following overall objectives:

A. Given a campus design that includes multilayer switching over


Fast Ethernet, deploy the required Cisco products and services
that enable connectivity and traffic transport.

B. Implement the necessary services at each layer of the network


to all users to obtain membership in multicast groups in a
working multilayer switched network.

C. Given a working multilayer switched network, control network


traffic by implementing the necessary admission policy at each
layer of the network topology.

A. Internet access and Web browser with flash plug-in installed.

Classroom Policies

Class begins and ends at the scheduled time, unless otherwise specified by
the instructor. If shift work or employment will cause an interruption of the
student’s class time, please confer with the instructor on the first day of
class, to see if some arrangement can be worked out to prevent loss of grade
points. This must be done whether the conflict would prevent the student
from attending all or any part of the class.

Talking or other distractions will not be tolerated during the lecture.


Questions and discussions are welcome pertaining to relevant and current
class material only.

Computers are provided to be used in relation to class material only. No


music, games, surfing the net, checking e-mail, etc. is allowed during class
time. No programs are to be downloaded to the computers without the
permission of the instructor. Failure to abide by these rules will result in loss
of Internet privileges.

Personal laptops are not allowed in the classroom, and removable drives are
not to be used during testing. All cell phones are to be turned off or in silent
mode during class.

The classroom will be available as an open lab during various times of the
day when classes are not being conducted. Use of the classroom as an open
lab when class is being conducted is at the discretion of the instructor

No food or drink is allowed in the classroom. Smoking is not allowed


inside the Technical Building.
Horseplay will not be tolerated.

Grading System

The grading scale is as follows:


A = 100 - 90
B = 89 - 80
C = 79 - 70
D = 69 - 60
E = 59 or less
Not all assigned laboratory exercises can be completed during scheduled
classroom time, students are expected to complete them outside of class
during lab hours.

Department Attendance Policy

If you are not going to be able to attend a class session, you must notify the
instructor prior to the beginning of class (excused absence). You are allowed
three excused absences.

Makeup Policy

It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor about any work


missed. All makeup work must be made up within two weeks of the date
missed unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Any
quiz missed due to absenteeism, arriving late or leaving class early cannot
be made up.

You will not be allowed make up work missed if you are unexcused or have
more than three excused absences. The student is cautioned that
absenteeism, arriving late or leaving early can quickly lower a grade point
average.

All exams missed must be made up one week before the final exam.

Office Hours

Office hours will be posted in the door of the instructor’s office. The
instructor will be available to answer questions regarding the class
curriculum during these hours. Availability after office hours is by
appointment only.

Finding Help

If you need tutoring, free help can be obtained by contacting the tutoring
coordinator,
Ed Ruffion in the administration building or calling 618-437-5321 extension
1343.
If you are able to tutor students, also contact the tutoring coordinator so that
funding
can be arranged for you.

When attending classes at Rend Lake College the student should leave a
copy of his/her schedule stating day, time, building and room number where
they will be while on campus with a responsible person.
