happen in materials under the condition of
presence or lack of oxygen.

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that
will disturb you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple
instructions below to successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit.
Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in
every page of
this module.
2. Write on your notebook the concepts about the
lessons. Writing enhances learning that is
important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the
module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your
answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply
what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!

LESSON 3: CHANGES IN MATTER

EXPECTATIONS

You will investigate changes that happen in materials under the

presence or lack of oxygen.
Specifically, this module will help you to
• identify the characteristics of physical and chemical change
• describe and differentiate physical and chemical change operationally
• appreciate the changes that happen in matter under the presence or lack of
oxygen.

Let us start your journey in learning more on Changes in Matter.

I am sure you are ready and excited to answer the Pretest.
Smile and cheer up!

A. Oxidation is a process of gaining one or more electrons.
B. Oxidation is the process of losing one or more electrons.
C. Oxidation is when a substance catches fire spontaneously.
D. Oxidation is the rapid decomposition of organic materials.

market. After a while you observed that the slices of potato become
brown. What happened?

D. Both A and B are correct.
5. If burning wood is an example of chemical change, which is an
example of physical change?

Great, you finished answering the

questions. You may
request your facilitator to check your
work.
Congratulations and keep on learning!

2
LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

DIRECTION: Identify the following materials as useful or waste. Using your

crayon, color the circle in the picture RED if it is a useful material and
color it BLUE if it is a waste material.
1. empty bottles 2. expired medicine 3. old newspaper

4. used car battery 5. carton box 6. banana peelings

7. busted bulb 8. used tin can 9. worn out wires

10. used plastic cups

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Change is happening all around us all of the
time. Matter changes differently. These changes
are either classified as physical or chemical
changes.
Physical Change

Physical changes are changes in matter

where no new material is formed. It can
further be classified as reversible or
irreversible and change is temporary. The
melted ice cube may be refrozen, so melting
(solid to liquid) is a reversible physical change. Other changes of state
include evaporation (liquid to gas), freezing (liquid to solid),
and condensation (gas to liquid). Dissolving is also a reversible physical
change. When salt is dissolved into water, the salt is said to have entered
the aqueous state. The salt may be regained by boiling off the water.
Some types of physical changes include:
• Changes of state (changes from a solid to a liquid or a gas and vice versa)
• Separation of a mixture
• Physical deformation (cutting, denting, stretching, chopping, breaking,
crumpling, tearing)
• Making solutions (special kinds of
mixtures)

Chemical Change

Chemical changes are changes in matter

where new material is formed. Chemical
changes are irreversible. Some chemical changes often produce heat and
light and all changes are permanent. Some chemical changes can be
observed under the presence or lack of oxygen. Oxidation is any chemical
reaction that involves the moving of electrons. When iron reacts with
oxygen it forms a chemical called rust because it has been oxidized (the
iron has lost some electrons) and the oxygen has been reduced (the oxygen
has gained some electrons). Some other example is the browning of apple
after being cut because it was exposed to oxygen. Fire dies out when there
is not enough oxygen. It needs 3 components to continue lighting. These
are fuel, heat and oxygen.

ACTIVITY IV
Apple Oxidation

OBJECTIVE: Investigate change that happens in apple in the presence or lack of

oxygen.

MATERIALS: Apple
Knife (seek assistance to elders when using)
Water basin
NOTE: You can replace apple with eggplant or potato.
PROCEDURES:
1. Cut the apple in two.
2. Put water in the basin and place the first half of apple in it while place the
other outside the basin.
3. Label the half of apple submerged in water A, and the other half exposed in
air B.
4. Leave them for 5 minutes.
5. Investigate and observe the changes
happen to both apples.
6. Then answer the questions that follows:
a. Which apple turns brown in color?
_______________

b. Why do you think happens in apple B?

______________________________________________________________________
c. Will apple A eventually turns brown if left overnight?
______________________________________________________________________
d. What do you think is present in air that turns the apple brown?
____________________________________________________________________
e. What kind of change do you think happens in the apple?
______________________________________________________________________
f. What would you do to prevent fruits and vegetables turning brown
before cooking or eating?

ACTIVITY V
Iron Oxidation

OBJECTIVE: Investigate change that happens in iron nails in the presence or lack
of oxygen.

MATERIALS: 2 iron nails

tissue paper/ paper

PROCEDURES:
1. Place the first iron nail in a secured box where no air can enter. Label
the iron nails A.
8
2. Place the other iron nail in an open cabinet then label it B.
3. Leave them for 3-4 days untouched.
4. After 4 days, observe and investigate which iron nail has the most
rust (kalawang) by wiping it with paper or a tissue paper.
5. Then, answer the questions that follows:
a. In which iron nails are rust more visible? _________________
b. If the iron nail A will have the same exposures in air like iron nail B,
would rust also appear?Why?
___________________________________________
c. Why is rust present in iron nail B?
d. Why is rust not present in iron nail A?
_______________________________________________________________________
e. What kind of change do you think happen when iron nail rusts?
_______________________________________________________________________
f. What would you do in order to prevent rust to form in iron nails or
any metals?
