I. Activity Proper

Let’s Start
Look closely at the drawing. Which objects are near, far, and very far? Write the words
near, far, very far beside them.

Remember

SPACE – is the distance or area between, around, above, below, and

within things. Here are the different techniques:

1. Overlapping – put one shape on top of another.

2. Size – far shapes are drawn smaller while near shapes are drawn
bigger.
3. Focus – put more details on the closer objects and fewer details
on distant objects.
4. Placement – far objects are drawn higher while the closer ones
are drawn lower

You can create the illusion of space in your portrait drawing using lines, shapes,
and textures. You can also use the principles of balance.

Lines – will help you show the movement of the person or persons you are drawing.

Contrast of Textures can also help your audience or viewer feels and understands
the person or group of people that you draw.

Shapes – will help your audience see the details of your drawing, since people have
unique features.

Balance – arrange the elements so that no part of the work seems heavier than the
other parts. Portrait artists show balance in the face and body of their subjects.

Look deeper into your subject by observing the details. When you are sketching, you
cannot capture all the details at once. After seeing your subject in careful detail, you
will be able to sketch not just the mole, scar, lines on his or her face and body, but
also the details of the clothes he/she is wearing.
