Science Fair Project, Research Paper and Presentations

STEP #1 Week of January 17, 2011


Think about your science fair project and discuss it with your parents. Decide what you
are going to do. Remember, this project must be something you can test! You will be
conducting research and testing your hypothesis by doing an experiment.
NOTE: All work and parent signatures must be turned in on time in order to receive full
credit.

I have seen this folder and I am aware of my child’s science fair project topic,
requirements, research paper and presentation that he/she will need to be working on

STEP #2 Thursday, February 3, 2011 Written Proposal

Please have your neat and readable proposal on a full sheet of loose-leaf paper in this
folder. It must include your question, purpose, hypothesis, variables, materials,
procedure, and your references. Include the name of any book(s) you will be using. All
students are required to include at least ONE BOOK. Bring your book(s) to class on this
day. If you are using any of the books that I have provided in class, please be sure that
you have attached sticky notes to the page you are citing with your name on it. Also, be
sure to include the name of the source and the page number in your written proposal
under the section entitled Bibliography/References.

STEP #3 Thursday, February 17, 2011 Planning and Preparation at
Home
Get all of the materials that you will need for your presentation. Practice your
experiment at home. Purchase your display board and plan the layout of your
presentation.

Get ready to do your presentations. Bring this folder in on this day with your parent’s
signature.

STEP #4 February 21, 2011 through March 17, 2011


Presentations
Starting on Monday, February 21st you need to be ready to present your project to the
class. You will be assigned a day during this four week period to do your presentation.
You will be responsible for bringing in your project (supplies, equipment, display board,
etc.) as well as teaching and explaining to the class what your project is all about. You
should plan on spending 10-15 minutes for your presentation. Be sure to bring this folder
to class on this day. You will need to present this folder to me before you begin your
presentation.

STEP #5 Thursday, March 17, 2011 Presentation Sheets


You will receive these sheets in class during the week of February 21st. You will use these
to write about other students’ presentations. You must have at least 18 summaries. You
will need to include: 1.) the name of presenter, 2.) title of the project, 3.) hypothesis, 4.)
explanation of the experiment, 5.) whether or not the hypothesis was proved true or
false. Your summaries must be concise and well written using complete sentences.

STEP #6 Thursday, March 24, 2011 Research Paper (Rough Draft)


Your entire paper needs to be organized and ready to be typed. This rough draft MUST
be in the student’s own handwriting (this means cursive) using pencil or erasable pen. It
must include the following: The Question (the main idea), Purpose, Hypothesis, Variables,
Procedure, Materials, Data, Conclusion (the answer to the question), Background
Information, and Bibliography/References. Please place your rough draft in this folder
and turn it in no later than March 24th.

STEP #7 Thursday, March 31, 2011 Research Paper (FINAL COPY)


Turn in the final, typed copy of your research paper. Be sure to make 2 copies of your
paper (one to be turned in and one to keep with your display). You will also be given a
form to have your parents sign indicating that you typed your own final copy. Place all of
these items in this folder and turn it in no later than March 31st.

STEP #8 THE NIGHT OF THE SCIENCE FAIR


Date- To be Announced at a later date.
Be sure to arrive early in order to set up your display. Stand by your project and be
ready to explain your project to parents and guests. Don’t worry . . . at some point during
the evening, I will allow you to “investigate” your classmates’ projects.
