POST TITLE: Radiographer – Imaging Department

BAND: Band 5

BASE: The Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS

JOB SUMMARY:

To competently undertake imaging techniques, planning and prioritising own


workload whilst maintaining a high quality of work to ensure complete
consideration for the patient and staff. To be a good example to and train
student radiographers and other health care workers, and help them to
develop into skilled considerate workers.

OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE OF THE POST:

Diagnostic Role

1) To competently carry out imaging examinations in Main X- Ray,


Accident Service X-Ray, on the Wards and in the Theatre Suites.
To undertake CT brain examinations and participate in the CT
rotation.
2) To ensure that all examinations are justified as per the IR(ME)R
2000 Regulations and fulfil the role of operator. To minimise
radiation dose levels as low as reasonably practical.

3) To display a high degree of precision and hand eye coordination to


produce accurate images in a timely manner.

4) To participate in the “out of hours” emergency service on a rota basis.


To participate in flexible working, dependent on service needs.
Working single-handed to maintain radiographic cover, cross
hospital, inclusive of Accident Service and the Operating Theatres.
To provide first line advice to medical and nursing staff on imaging
procedures during emergency hours. To carry and respond to
emergency bleep.

5) To assess and prioritise patient workload, being accountable for


own professional actions, conduct not directly supervised.

6) To promote the team and thus, where appropriate,


communicating with other staff internal and external to the
department.

7) To participate in the extended role of the radiographer


undertaken at this hospital. Participate in first line image
interpretation in A & E. Undertake IV injections of contrast
media.

8) To produce radiographs. Operate and troubleshoot


processing equipment to maintain functionality.

9) To ensure integrity of data quality on the computer systems and


report errors to appropriate lead person.

10) To check radiographs for quality of image, identification of patients,


date, and the anatomical markers. Collate all relevant documents
and radiographs and present for interpretation.

11) To be responsible for the safe use of expensive, specialised


equipment. This will entail monitoring and maintaining in good
working order. Report any faults to a more senior radiographer.

12) To participate in departmental research and audit.

13) To regularly participate in the department’s quality control


procedures including reject analysis, and equipment testing.

14) To maintain appropriate records and update clinical observations on


the Imaging Request Form.

15) To contribute to discussions on service/policy developments.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) To show complete consideration for the patient inclusive


of privacy and dignity. To assist patients to maintain their
personal hygiene to include toileting, safe handling and
disposal of body fluids.

2) To advise and ensure correct physical and psychological


preparation for imaging procedures. Communicate
complex sensitive information, relevant to the patient’s
condition, overcoming barriers to understanding.

3) To be responsible for patients during imaging


examinations, and be able to adapt care dependent upon
age, condition and clinical need, demonstrating empathy
and reassurance.
This will entail assessing, planning, implementing and
evaluating the patient’s condition. Safe handling and
moving of patients utilising correct procedures and
equipment when required.

Training Role

1) To participate in CPD and other developmental activities.


To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice,
maintain and develop personal portfolio.

2) To supervise and participate in the practical training of student,


and newly qualified radiographers. This will involve training in
positioning techniques, care of the patient and use of
equipment.

3) To participate in the training and education of imaging assistants


and other health care professionals.

GENERAL:
To comply at all times with any regulations issued by the Trust, especially those
governing Health and Safety at work and to ensure that any defects which may
affect safety at work are brought to the attention of the appropriate manager.

This job description reflects the present requirements and objectives of the post.
As the duties of the post change and develop the job description will be
reviewed and will be subject to amendment, in consultation with the postholder.
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

Professional healthcare staff are responsible for complying with the relevant
standards set by their regulatory or professional bodies (for example the GMC’s
Good Medical Practice, and for nurses and midwives, the NMC’s Code of
Professional Conduct). A breach of such standards may lead to action by NHS
bodies independent of any taken by the regulatory or professional body
concerned. It would be investigated fairly, and appropriate steps taken to
prevent a recurrence and address any wider causes.

learn relating to their employment, other members of staff and to the general
public. All staff are expected to respect the requirements under the Data
Protection Act 1998.

You are required to comply with the Trust’s strategy regarding infection
control, as set out in the document “Principles and Responsibilities for
Delivering No Avoidable Infections”, a copy of which is available on the
intranet.

DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS

A risk assessment has indicated that a Criminal Records Bureau “Disclosure”


is both proportionate and relevant to this position. Any person who is
conditionally offered this post will be required to undertake a criminal records
check in this respect.
