IEK INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE On the Theme „„ Engineering Better Counties and Cities for Better Living‟‟ atiek@iekenya.org ; iekconference@gmail.com Website: www.iekenya.org FOREWORD On the 27 th August 2010, the President of the Republic of Kenya promulgated a new constitution with two levels of government i.e., the national government and county government comprising of 47 counties. The devolved government will distribute substantial resources equitably towards the implementation of Vision 2030. The counties are to provide services in the following areas: Agriculture; County health services; County transport; County planning and development; County public works and services; Fire fighting services and disaster management; Governance at local level; Solid waste management and pollution control and Implementation of specific national policies on Environment. Cities are centres of production consumption and nodes for international trade and commerce. It is estimated that 50% of world‟s population lives in urban areas while 32% of Kenya‟s population lives in urban areas. This is expected to grow to 60% by 2030. One thing is certain and it is that there is no magic that will apply everywhere to achieve sustainability in basic services for cities, there has to be Engineers involved. Engineers will have to ensure that engineering activities and goals meet the needs of the Vision 2030 as a development strategy to transform Kenya into a global competitive middle income country with high quality of life within the next twenty years. Balanced efforts will be needed to maintain existing infrastructure and investments already made with a need to provide a comprehensive plans for the future. The theme of the conference, “Engineering better counties and cities for better living” will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the role of Engineer‟s in shaping counties and cities and improving quality of life for their residents. It will address the background to county government‟s roles and strategic objectives, the way in which engineering professions will develop principles, innovative methodologies and the practical application of technologies in the field of Engineering, best practices to help secure this aim. To name but a few challenges, counties and cities need reliable and affordable systems of energy, water supply and sanitation, highly efficient transport systems, ICT , Irrigation and enhancement of agricultural production, storage and post harvest management techniques, sustainable buildings that meet the needs of the users, fire and disaster preparedness etc. The conference will: Assess the engineering industry's‟ contribution to networking the nation through their leading role in developing the technical, economic and social infrastructure upon which we all depend. Provide countless opportunities to engage decision makers within the government industry, academia and engineering professionals in both the private and public sectors. We therefore invite your participation in presenting papers, exhibiting products and services, sponsoring and supporting the conference in all ways possible. We look forward to your active participation and support. Eng. DM Wanjau Chairman, Institution of Engineers of Kenya. " id="pdf-obj-0-22" src="pdf-obj-0-22.jpg">
