This chapter introduces the problem of overreliance on wood resources for paper production and reviews alternatives. It notes that non-wood fibers make up 10% of global paper but some countries use more. The paper industry in the Philippines contributes to the economy but also waste. Demand for paper is increasing but alternatives are needed to replace wood and reduce deforestation. Some commercial alternatives include palm and banana fibers but avocado peel is a relatively new potential alternative for the Philippines and this research aims to study its suitability.

The use of non-timber resources as ingredients for the production of paper covers 10% of its use throughout the world. However, the situation differs according to the country and depending on the country. For example, China uses more than wheat straw and other non-wood fiber as raw material for paper production. The global production of paper and board was approximately 407 million metric tons in 2015. One third of the production was attributable to graphic paper and more than half of that production was attributable to packaging paper. Global paper consumption in 2020 is expected to amount to 500 million tons. The paper industry in the Philippines plays an important role in the industrialization program of the country, contributing to the growth of the economy and providing employment opportunities to thousands of workers. Unfortunately, it also contributes to the waste generation in the country. The paper industry in the Philippines comprises 39 local recycling paper mills, 6 abaca pulp mills and 1 integrated paper mill situated in the province of Surigao that has a tree plantation and supplies its own requirement for pulp to produce paper, or a total of 46 industry players. Demand for paper in today increasingly technological process increases with current. These challenge the opinions of that the progress of information technology will lead to less use of paper and the community to create a paperless world. With regards to this situation, many alternatives have been introduced to replace the main sources of wood in pulp and paper industry. Using wood as a raw material for paper production causes deforestation and subsequent possibility of a limited timber resources crisis. In recent years, demand for pulp has increased rapidly, especially at the developing countries. Because of the shortage of wood resources as the primary basis for the production of paper, there are other alternatives such as the introduction of non-wood lignocellulosic-based material that has been used as a substituted for wood. There were some materials that have been commercialized as an alternative such as the empty fruit bunches of oil palm, banana fiber and carpet grass. 1 The use of avocado peel can be considered relatively as new in the paper manufacturing in the Philippines. This paper is intended to improve or add the products of paper-based materials of natural fibers as an alternative way to reduce environmental problems involving for example the felling of trees without close supervision. In addition, other factors to consider are the cost of paper production. This research can also determine whether the avocado peel fiber is suitable as a base that is capable of providing the increase in the mechanical properties of the products.
