Determine analytically the stress vector components on the plane whose unit normal is n̂ = (2/3)eˆ1 + (1/3)eˆ2 +
(2/3)eˆ3 . Check the results by Mohr’s diagram for this problem.
6. For the state of stress

τij = 2 −2 −3

find principal shear stress and the corresponding normal stress.
7. Find the octahedral normal stress and corresponding octahedral shear stress at point P if state of stress at the
point is given by

τij = 2 10 8

determine
a) the body force distribution if eqilibrium equations are to be satisfied throughout the field.
√
b) principal stress values at the point P (a, 0, 2 a).
1
c) maximum shear stress at P.
d) principal deviatoric stress at P.
11. For a rigid body rotation with vi = ϵijk ωj xk , find the kinetic energy integral. Check the expression against the
faimiliar equation in rigid body dynamics.
12. A long prismatic dam (as shown in Fig 1) is subjected to water pressure that increases linearly with the depth.
The dam has thickness 2w and height h. Write traction boundary conditions for the top, the left vertical, and
the right vertical bounding surfaces of the dam.
13. Consider a bar of cross-sectional area A = bH and length L. The initial configuration of the bar is such that
its longitudinal axis is along the X1 axis, as shown in Fig 2. . Suppose that the bar is subjected to uniaxial
tensile stress that produces a pure stretch λ along the length and a pure stretch µ along the height of the bar
and then rotates it, without bending, by an angle θ, as shown in Fig2 . Assume that the width b of the bar
does not change during the deformation. Therefore, µ denotes the ratio of deformed to undeformed height (or
cross-sectional area) of the bar. Determine
(a) the deformation mapping and the components of the deformation gradient and
(b) the components of the Cauchy stress tensor as well as the first and second PiolaKirchhoff stress tensors
