I. Topic/Title
Feedbacking in Assessing Reading
II. Overview/Introduction
Reading assessments are meant to provide feedback on the skills, processes, and
knowledge resources that represent reading abilities, though it is important to note that
different assessment practices may assume different theories of reading development,
assessments can be used to aid comprehension. This helps the child identify his or her
strengths, as well as weaknesses where feedback is an essential part of effective
learning. It helps students understand the subject being studied and gives them clear
guidance on how to improve, a tool that provides guidance. And that’s why we have
feedback in assessing reading.
V. Summary/Key Points
Feedback isn't just about advice, praise, or evaluation. "Effective feedback requires that a
person has a goal, takes action to achieve the goal, and receives goal-related information
about his or her actions”. Assessment as well as feedback should produce information that
is useful in helping students become better readers, and assessment should do no harm.
To be independent and successful, readers and teachers must assume responsibility for
self-assessment. Reading requires specific student mindsets and strategies, and our
instruction must help students develop both.
