Course Description:
A well defined and efficient serviceable road network can provide a developed country as it
encourages investors to invest in the country in various forms as well as it enhances the personal life
national life. For creating a well defined road, need initially a successful highway planning. Then
highway requires a proper highway location survey for finding suitable location on the proposed area.
1
According to traffic & national requirement, the highway is needed to be classified according to the
road system. Then starting from the various traffic surveys such as speed study, volume study,
capacity study etc. geometric design is to be properly completed. Hence the subject covers all of the
above contents along with traffic control devices, parking system and roadway lighting. Traffic control
service includes road marking, road side regulating signs, traffic signal system at intersections etc.
And geometric design of highways covers the elements of design, cross-section elements, curves and
sight distances both for horizontal & vertical alignment.
Moreover, the course includes the general requirements of railway system. For introduction of railway
Railway Surveys, Train Resistances and Rolling Stock, Rail (permanent way), station and yards,
signaling, points and crossings, maintenance.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):

After successful completion of the course, student will be able to:

Description
CLO01 Introduce themselves to transportation engineering principles for railways and highways
with the emphasis on safe and efficient operation of roadways and railways.
CLO02 Understand the basic elements of transportation system and their classification.
CLO03 Define a traffic problem, collection of field traffic data, analyzing and interpreting data, and
finally preparing a master plan for a project.
CLO04 Apply the knowledge for conducting various traffic surveys such as speed study, volume
study, capacity study etc.
CLO05 Design the cross-section elements, curves and sight distances both for horizontal & vertical
alignment in the various practical fields.
CLO06 Apply the knowledge for signal design at various road intersections in urban area.
CLO07 Understand the basic idea about railway system & its various elements of design.
CLO08 Train Resistances and Rolling Stock, Rail (permanent way), station and yards, signaling,
points and crossings, maintenance.
