Speech Topic: Title

Speech Title: Anger: A Silent Killer
Organizational Pattern: Causal (Cause – Effect pattern)
General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the effects of anger to the heart.
Central Idea: Anger is a normal, human emotion; however if it becomes
uncontrollable, it also becomes a bridge in developing cardiovascular
diseases which are life threatening.

Introduction

Religiously speaking, anger is considered to be one of the seven cardinal or

deadly sins. Anger speaks for vengeance unless with reasonable cause and vengeance
is sinful when it exceeds its limits which would result to injustice and greediness
(attention getter).
Anger is a common human experience and I am not considering myself as an
exemption of which. Do you always feel angry? If you knew that frequent anger is
putting you at high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, would you still continue
shouting, slamming the doors, hating everybody during an argument or even having
bundles of requirements and exams? (Audience motivation/tie to the audience)
Well, my science teacher in 5th Grade told us that every time you get angry there
is always a heart cell or also called as cardiomyocyte that will die which is parallel to the
study of Harvard Medical School that angriest men were three times more likely to
develop heart disease than the calm ones, and of course this is common to males
(credibility).
Anger is a normal, human emotion; however if it becomes uncontrollable, it also
becomes a bridge in developing cardiovascular diseases which are life threatening
(thesis statement).
Here also, you will know the two primary types of anger, the physiological effect
of anger to heart, and ways to manage anger (preview).
Wake up your senses, as we begin (transition)!

Body

I. The two primary types of anger are:

A. Passive Anger
(symptoms)
1.) Dispassion
i. cold shoulder
2.) Obsessive Behavior
ii. making a habit of constantly checking things
3.) Secretive behavior
iii. gossiping
4.) Self-blame
iv. apologizing too often

B. Aggressive Anger
(symptoms)
1.) Bullying
i. playing on people’s weaknesses
2.) Grandiosity
ii. mistrust to others
3.) Hurtfulness
iii. physical violence, verbal abuse to oneself and others

Knowing the types of anger, now let’s explore how anger affects the heart (transition).

II. The Physiologic Effect of Anger to the Heart

A. Release of stress hormones including adrenaline and cortisol.

(which causes)
1.) Increases heart rate
i. heart rate more than normal range (60-100 bpm for adults)
2.) Blood vessel constriction
ii.narrowing of blood vessel but is not cause by fat deposits
3.) Increase blood pressure
iii.blood pressure beyond boundary (130/90)
4.) Frequent high blood pressure roughens the smooth lining of artery
iv.promotes fat deposits and stimulates formation of blood clots

As mentioned, anger is a normal, human emotion so you cannot prevent the

occurrence of anger to a certain person; human as we are the best thing to do is to
manage it (transition).

III. Ways to Manage Anger

A. Cognitive Behavioral Affective Therapy (CBAT)

1.) Guided Imagery
i.using of pictures to manipulate senses
2.) Meditation
iii.emptying yourself from environmental stressors
3.) Don’t boil in silence
iii.talk out feelings with family and friends

B. Spiritual Enhancement
1.) Encourage to attend spiritual activities with family or with friends
i.Bible Sharing
ii.Masses

C. Healthy Lifestyle
1.) Regular Exercise
i.reduces mental stress and physical risks
2.) Proper Diet
ii.eating proper nutrients

D. Promote humorous environment

1.) Laughter (reduces tension)
i.reading jokes
ii,watching sitcom

Upon knowing all these things, you can now improve yourself in terms of controlling
your emotion (transition).

Conclusion

Uncontrolled anger has no benefit to each and everyone of us, certainly in

developing life-threatening diseases. Definitely anger is a health threat at any age
“Among young adults it is a predictor of premature heart disease later in life” says
Harvey Simon, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School (re-
assert).
Knowing and understanding the two types of anger such as the Passive Anger
and Aggressive, its physiologic effect to heart and ways to manage anger such as
CBAT, Spiritual Enhancement and Healthy Lifestyle; you can now build a strong
foundation of your future as a healthy individual (review the main points).
It is your choice, whether to overcome anger or be overpowered by anger. Work
for it as early as now so that you will not end up, plead guilty of killing yourself! (close
effectively)
