Investment Board Nepal (IBN) intends to develop West Seti Storage Hydroelectric Project and
SR6 storage Hydroelectric Project in conjunction in Seti River basin of Sudurpaschim. The West
Seti was proposed as 750 MW reservoir project whereas SR6 was proposed as 642 MW reservoir
scheme independently by the previous studies. However, IBN perceives a certain alteration of
proposed design storage capacity of SR6 to lower the inundation risk of nearby market centers
resulting into decrease in generation capacity of the SR6 project. IBN proposes to develop these
two projects in conjunction with combine capacity of around 1200 MW (as per preliminary
studies). The proposed Headworks site of SR6 lies around 40 Km downstream of proposed
Powerhouse site of West Seti project.
SN FEATURES CHARACTERISTICS
GENERAL
1 Name of the Project West Seti and SR6 Conjunction Storage Hydroelectric Project
2 Sector Hydropower
3 Type Storage Type (West Seti with installed capacity of 750MW and SR6 of
installed Capacity of around 450 MW with total installed capacity of
1200 MW).
3 Project Area West Seti Storage project is proposed to develop on Seti river located in
Sudar Paschim Province of Nepal. West Seti is proposed to develop at
Doti and Bajhang districts. The nearest airport to the site is at Dhangadi
which is about 180 Km away from project sites. Dipayal bazaar is
around 180km from Dhangadi, can be reached from in around 6 hours’
drive. West Seti proposed headworks lies around 42km through rural
road from Dipayal.
Salient Features SR6 (as per JICA study 1993 and revised Dam Elevation)
The project is located in Doti and Achham district of Sudarpaschim province in far-western part
of the country. The initial study from the consultants proposed a Reservoir Type project in Seti
River producing 642MW with draft rate of 0.6. However the proposed Full Supply Level in order
to generate 642 MW will submerge the two large market center of the area Hence, IBN proposed
a revision in Full Supply Level to 520m in order to minimize the risk to the Seti Bridge and
possibility of resettlement of large section of Dipayal bazaar.
Proposed Design
A storage dam was proposed to be built where powerhouse is to be constructed at the toe of the
dam. The dam site was proposed around 2 km downstream from the confluence of Budhi Ganga
and Seti River and 19 km upstream from the confluence of Seti River with Karnali River
(Tentative coordinate 29° 5'4"N and 81° 6'38"E).
Hence, after the revision of the Full supply level, IBN intends to build the two project in
conjunction with each other so that harmonized operation of West Seti and SR6, where West
Seti is developed first and subsequently SR6 is developed allows a higher optimization of the
river resources for optimal electricity generation.
Both the project will be operated in a harmonized approach in terms of water sharing,
sediment inflow ensuring smooth operation and lower technical risk to the SR6 project.
The augmented flow fromWest Seti ensures that SR6 can have desired discharge (which
capacity was decreased due to lowering FSL) allowing plant operation for longer duration,
even in dry period.
Power evacuation of both system can be harmonized through single substation as well as
singular transmission network which further makes both the project financially
attractive.
