years of any councilperson in East
Hampton.” This week Julia Prince
informed the East Hampton Democratic
Committee that she will not seek re-
election this year.
“I really thought long and hard
about why I decided to do this in the
first place,“ Prince explained Monday
morning. “I really love it out here and
always wanted to serve the community.”
“When I ran I said I only wanted to
serve one term,” the Montauk resident
continued. “I’ve always felt politics
shouldn’t be a career, it should be a
passion. If it ever becomes about a

“When I think back about my
motivation, it really was about public
service. I had a lot of goals. Of course I
didn’t know what was about to explode.”
Prince wasn’t in office long when
the news of East Hampton’s financial
crisis and disgraced former supervisor
Bill McGintee’s fiscal predation began
to surface.
“I worked real hard to out him,”
Prince recounted, “I did the best I could
with a very dysfunctional board.” As
more and more was revealed about East
Hampton’s monetary mess, Prince often
stood alone in voting against proposed
expenditures, including offering “no”
votes on two of McGintee’s proposed

were hiding a fiscal disaster when she ran for East Hampton Town Board .
Pat Mansir, she demanded public
meetings with town auditors in an effort
to determine the depth of the town’s
deficit. She also pushed for the creation
of an independent Budget Advisory
Committee. “I’m really proud of that. I
had to use all my powers of persuasion
to make it happen.”
While grateful for the efforts to
restore financial stability made by
current colleagues on the town board,
Prince this week expressed frustration
functioning as a minority party member.
With a GOP majority in place, she said
she is often left out of discussions
about potential initiatives. “In good
faith, I need to be able to accomplish
stuff and don’t feel in this climate
it’s possible.” Though she spoke of
difficulty with being kept in the loop
at town hall, Prince has also had a
tenuous relationship with Democratic
Party members. She refused to vote
solely along partisan lines, occasionally
earning the ire of the faithful.
“I really struggled to be independent
and fair and want to continue doing
that, being reasonable.” Although
she admitted she often felt alone,
Prince said, “I think I’ve remained
independent.”
Elected in 2007 after running
alongside McGintee and Councilman
Pete Hammerle (who is also up for
re-election) Prince took office in 2008,
tallying 1000 votes more than the
slate’s standard-bearer. A former town
code enforcement officer, after trying
to fix town finances, her other focus
was on issues young people face. Just
29 when she was elected, Prince said
her youth gave her unique insight into
that segment of the community and
the struggle young people have finding
work, housing, and staying in their
hometown. “I felt the town was not
going to survive if the largest employer
in the town was the town.”

Last Friday board members voted to
accept town attorney Michael Sordi’s
resignation and enter into a settlement
agreement with him. Following the vote
they referred all questions to Deputy
Town Attorney Kathleen Murray who,
in turn, refused to release the public
record.
It was only after strenuous insistence

seems to be a good sort of a guy, but he’s
dead man walking, and what I’m about to
propose will piss off a lot of people. But if
you wait and take a deep breath and think
about it, you’ll agree that my idea would
be the best thing that can happen for the
memory of Charlie Sheen.
I believe when Sheen reads about my
idea, he will be in complete agreement
with what I’m about to say.
I propose a national Charlie Sheen

I’m talking about people in this
country investing a dollar to see if they
can pick the time and the day when
Charlie overdoses.

Rock Fest Seeks Permit For Airport

Promoters of a two-day rock festival,
originally planned for an open farm field
in Amagansett, will switch the venue to the
East Hampton Town Airport if they receive
all the necessary permits in a timely manner.
The two-day event, scheduled for
August 13 and 14, won’t disrupt air
traffic, said Chris Jones, one of the
promoters. “We’ll be in one area over
by East Hampton Studios, and a fencing
system will be in place,” he said. “We’ve
spent a long time on it and we know the
site pretty well.”

Clueless Lawmakers
Southampton Town Board members have earned their reputation
for being arrogant -- now we can add “clueless” to the list. When town
attorney Michael Sordi resigned last week, all concerned refused to
reveal the terms to the public, even though it obviously contained
financial arrangements. Deputy town attorney Kathleen Murray claimed
the matter was confidential. After we called Bob Freeman from the NYS
Committee On Open Government, officials said Murray would call him,
as if his directive wasn’t perfectly clear: all expenditures of public funds
are public information, regardless of the wording entered into any given
contract, and regardless of whether there is litigation pending or not.
Memo to Murray: veteran journalists interact with Freeman regularly;
We are more well-versed in the nuances of the Freedom of Information
Law than the average town attorney. This is a predominantly veteran
board: it shouldn’t be necessary for reporters to brief members about
the Sunshine Laws – they should already know them.
Property Rights
We received several calls from citizens concerned that a 7-Eleven
may go into a vacant restaurant by the IGA in Amagansett. Predictably,
the callers blamed the town board -- one insinuating the Republican
majority wants to promote business at the expense of the environment.
This is a recurring complaint, dating back three decades. It’s kind

One letter writer called for a building moratorium. Why? The
economy is struggling. Stores along Main Street are shuttered. New

to discourage anyone willing to bring jobs into town?
The Mess in Egypt
We don’t normally comment on world affairs but we have to
express our concern about what is happening in Egypt, specifically our
government’s role. News reports, and reports out of The White House,
indicate a steady stream of back and forth between our government
officials and the now-ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
President Obama on several occasions urged Mubarek to take an all-
inclusive approach to the rioters, in particular the Muslim Brotherhood.
One columnist, Nile Gardiner, accused the Obama administration
of giving the Brotherhood “a PR makeover.” In fact, the U.S. Director
of National Intelligence, James Clapper, said the group was “a very
heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence
and has decried Al Qaeda. . .”
Sounds peaceful enough, but perhaps the very name of the group
people do with their property: like adding an 9
apartment.
If single people just starting out or trapped
in low-paying jobs can’t afford to rent houses,
where are they supposed to go? There are
mobile home parks, but the majority of them
are for people 55 or over. There is absolutely
NOTHING for people between the ages of 20
and 55 who have no children and can provide
proof of income.
The current laws might take care of the
overcrowding of too many non-related persons
in a single dwelling, but they also penalize
American citizens who can’t afford to spend
$1600 to $2900 per month for a decent place.
There are still quite a few of us who do
not want to go knocking on the door of social
services. The welfare mentality is not how we
were brought up. Besides, once you’re in that
system, you have to be careful about how much
money you show in a bank account, etc. Any
appearance that your situation is improving
and you’re kicked out of the system. We all know
the welfare system forces people to remain at a

Citizens need to grasp the restrictions placed on our planning and
zoning boards, and our building inspectors. They are not judges or
juries; they do not decide if a store can be opened. Their sole job is
to assure the proposed store meets town code. If it does, they MUST
issue the necessary permits. There is no wiggle room.

Obama, Biden and Hillary Clinton were quick to throw a longtime ally
under the bus: worse, they are meddling in another country’s affairs.

In Michael Lewis’ The Big Short, he offers
an anecdote about a hedge fund manager who
asks an analyst to explain a recent Collateralized
Debt Obligation (CDO) because he couldn’t
understand it. The analyst reports back and
says, he doesn’t understand it either.
Understanding municipal finance isn’t
quite the same as understanding Wall Street
inscrutability, but it requires understanding a
certain level of complexity. To explain it to others
requires knowledge, an organized thought
process and good writing skills.

Also, they did not call it “sport.” It was
part of a day’s work. In this day and age, it is
cheaper to buy your meat rather than encumber
the cost of weapons, license, time, and effort in
the preparation of the kill. That’s got to be one
hell of a rush. Certainly not one duplicated by
the “sportsman” merely shooting at an inert
bull’s eye target . . . not unless they can get
it to breath.

A federal judge has ruled that socialized
medicine in America is unconstitutional. Bravo!
So, the Supreme Court will now have the final
say. How sad.
We, the people, have no confidence that
the federal government can run a nationalized
health care program. Why? Because the

anything right is abysmal. Maybe, just maybe if
they (politicians, bureaucrats, etc.) could make
us proud of their ability to perform, we would

The Chicken Dish From Hell
I wear the pants in my family.
I’m in charge.
I also do all the shopping and cooking.
It’s really a matter of survival – if I let my
wife Karen cook, she will end up killing me.
I learned this sad fact, not coincidentally, the
first meal Karen cooked for me. “It’s broiled
chicken,” she announced proudly. “My Mom
used to make it for us.” With that out came
eight pieces of grizzled bird, burnt a charcoal
hue. Thick, black, smoke poured out of the
oven. The parakeets died. Fire alarms went
off. After chugging a bottle of wine I tried to
bite into a piece – it was beet red, raw on the
inside. I grabbed the nearest bottle I could
find – Drano – and took a hit of that, hoping

I’ve been at the helm in the kitchen.
Being the family cook has its rewards,
the main one being you can eat whatever
you want. Here’s how it works at my house.
Let’s suppose I want a Shrimp Scampi. I’ll
call home early that afternoon. “Hi Hon,
what would you like for dinner tonight?”
“I’ve been dreaming of a nice piece
of codfish,” she’ll say excitedly.
“Hmmm, ah, Ok, great. Umm, I’ll er,
pick some up on the way home.”
I’ll make Scampi for you tonight, but
tomorrow I get what I want . . . Deal?”
“Well, I guess but . . .”
Even though I shop, cook, and clean
(more on that in a minute), Karen always
finds a way to inject herself into the cooking
process so she can claim partial ownership
of the meal. This is especially true when
we have friends over (Actually we have no
friends. Sometimes we rent a couple to come
over and pretend they are our friends.)
I’ll have already ladled the Scampi onto
the plate with the sautéed garlic spinach
and polenta (Karen calls it “placenta”). I’ll
have the big honkin’ frying pan filled with
oil and butter ready to singe anything it
comes near. I swing towards the sink to
dump the thing before it burns the hairs
off my arm. Suddenly, she appears like an
apparition. She’ll say something like, “I’ll
get the bread!” and walks directly in front
of me. She thinks the mere act of carrying
the bread gives her equal-partner status
when it comes to cooking the meal.
A war of nerves ensues when we are
up the mess I have created.
An hour later, I mercifully sit down
for a few moments of peace before
bedtime and another excruciating day
at work. That’s when she finally goes
into the kitchen. Like a Marine Drill
Sergeant, she is going to inspect.
“You need to look at this,” she’ll say sternly.
“What?”
“This frying pan. You need to see it.”
“No I don’t. I have it memorized.”
“Get in here.” She’ll take my finger
and drag the bottom of the frying pan.
“What does that feel like?”
I’m thinking it’s like some kind of
quiz. “Is it bigger than a bread basket?”
“It’s Grease!!!!!” There. She got me.
I did a cruddy job cleaning up. Near
exhaustion, my aching knees, bone on
bone, near collapse, my once powerful
shoulders trembling from the weight
of an entire newspaper and household,
my grizzled, gnarly hands, burnt from
the scalding hot oil, barely able to grip a
sponge, on the verge of passing out – yes,

it would stave off instant poisoning.
“You don’t like the chicken,” she said
dejectedly.
“Oh that’s not it. I know most people
like their chicken rare. Silly us. In our
house Mom always cooked it!”
Later, I tried to explain what parboiled
means, as in, “You see, Hun, your Mom
parboiled the chicken first and then
finished it off under the broiler.” Karen
insisted that wasn’t the case.
“Well,” I said, “the next time you cook
Karen will catch the trepidation in
my voice. “What is it?”
“Well,” I’ll reply. “They say the worms
in the codfish carry some sort of viral . . .“
“Never mind, never mind! Let’s have
burgers!”
“OK, sure,” I’ll say. “Just go online
and read me that article about Mad Cow
disease again so I can make sure I don’t
get the wrong kind of beef.”
That’ll usually do it. “Now I don’t
know what I want . . .” she’ll say. That’s
done. Eventually, I’ll want to leave the
table and read or watch a movie. She’ll
stall for time, knowing I am getting
bored. “Are you done?” I’ll ask repeatedly.
“NO, I’m still eating,” she’ll always
say. Meanwhile, there is like a twig of
something or other on her plate and maybe
a pea or a grain of rice. She’ll take her knife
and start cutting this miniscule particle.
Finally I’ll blurt out, “DO YOU MIND IF I
DO THE DISHES?” This is what she really
wants, of course, so she can blab on the

I cut a few corners cleaning up the dishes.
Guilty, Your Honor.
And, as in life, the situation evolves into a
“what goes around comes around” moment,
and The Circle remains unbroken.
“I’m going to clean up all over again.
You can’t be trusted,” she says.
“Fine,” I say. “And from now on you
can shop and cook, too!”
“I will!” she vows. “In fact, I’m making my
mother’s broiled chicken dish tomorrow!”
Note to self: get more Drano.

crafted an ambitious Roman Empire-
era film about a slave and his master. It
is at its heart a story about honor and
redemption, but it doesn’t take itself
too seriously – check out the dialect, for
example. Starring Channing Tatum, who
at least looks the part. Donald Sutherland
is seriously over the top. If you like the
genre, though, by all means go and enjoy.
Just Go With It (PG-13) An early favorite
for the Worst Movie Razzie. It’s about
a plastic surgeon seducing a younger
woman and his wife and kids get involved
because of the 3-D. Richard Roxburg, Rhys
Wakefield and Ioan Gruffudd go down (if
you’ll pardon the pun) with the ship.
Ip Man ( NR) Like Kung Fu movies? Donnie
Yen reprises his iconic role as Man, a Kung Fu
master who must prove himself worthy by
kicking the crap out of all the other Kung Fu
masters in Hong Kong. Sammo Hung is great
as one of the bad guys. If you want action,
you’ll get it with this flick. Add a star if you
really believe men can jump this far.
The Mechanic (R) Ouch. Even in the post-
Oscar season abyss most movies that are
released are fundamentally flawed but not
embarrassingly bad. This Jesse Statham
vehicle -- and no, he doesn’t fix cars – is so
stupid that even the urge to see many men
The Dilemma (PG-13) The trouble with
comedic actors is they keep taking roles
written to utilize their comic gifts and
eventually run into scripts that aren’t
funny. Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, say
hello to The Dilemma.

Brian Grazer should have known better. On
paper it’s a good one – the cast, for example,
is brimming with big names: Jennifer
Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum
and Queen Latifah to name a few. Even the

the slapstick execution, and the lack of
legitimately funny dialogue, that dooms this

“The school district has absolutely
no authority to enforce the local
town code,” Block said emphatically.
Even if children reside in an illegal
house, the district is still obligated
to educate them. “We have no role
in eradicating that house,” Block
explained. “There are privacy issues.
There are constitutional issues and
there are jurisdictional issues.”
Issues of personal privacy and
d i s c l o s u r e o f r e c o r d s a r e “v e r y
thorny,” Block continued. The courts
could subpoena school records during
a housing prosecution, but the law
requires that parents be notified
before records are released, and
they could go to court to squash the
subpoena. Following the discussion,
Block told The Independent that
in over 20 years he’s observed
the problem, “nothing much has

It took 100 years, but Bridgehampton
Bancorp. Inc finally got around to
buying another bank.
The company announced last week
that it reached an agreement to acquire
Hampton State Bank, a single branch
unit with modest holdings, in a stock
swap: Each share of Hamptons State
Bank will be converted into 0.3434
shares of Bridge Bancorp common
stock to be outstanding. Based upon
Bridge Bancorp’s closing stock price
on February 7, the transaction value
is approximately $6.3 million and
represents 136 percent of Hamptons
State Bank’s tangible book value as of
December 31, 2010, and a 4.4 percent
premium on core deposits.
“It was an opportunity to acquire
another local bank that was similar to
ours,” said Kevin O’Connor, president of

O’Connor said the building is leased for
another seven or eight years. The move
will give Bridgehampton National Bank
three branches in the immediate area.
“We’ll let our customers guide us,”

release, “This transaction represents
excellent value for Hamptons State Bank

The acquisition, which has been
unanimously approved by the boards
of directors of Bridge Bancorp and
Hamptons State Bank, is subject
to the approval of Hamptons State
Bankshareholders and the approval
of bank regulatory authorities. The
parties expect to close the transaction
in the third quarter of 2011. Established
in 1910, Bridgehampton National
Bank has assets of approximately $1
billion.

the radar if neighbors don’t complain, or
if it’s on such a big piece of property no
one can hear noise or notice any illegal
coming or going.

visa-versa. One advertisement offers
three different houses, depending
on age and preference: “You can
pick your house based on the social
atmosphere that most closely fits
what you’re looking for,” according to
the ad. The rental apparently comes
with a sort of tour director who
guides guests to desired locations.
“House Number One, The Retreat, will
host guests from their 20s to their
early 30s. This will be the youngest
group and accordingly the most
socially active house. Clubs will be
the recommended destinations each
weekend night.”
“House Number 2, The Estate, is
going to have a more balanced group
of 20 and 30 somethings and will still
be quite socially active. The weekend
itinerary may include both clubs and
lounges.
“Older folk – those over the dreaded
age of 30, lead a slightly more refined
lifestyle: House Number 3, the Manor
will host guests in their 30s and 40s who
are a little more independent, prefer
to go out for dinners, and enjoy happy
hours by day and lounges at night.”
If there were another rental for
those over 40, guests presumably would
be directed to the adult diaper room
where they could nod out in front of the
checkerboard on plastic chairs.

the Hamptons. “We all need to work
together,” her said, a theme echoed
by other group home organizers. The
typical client is well-heeled, and goes
to restaurants and upscale shops in
addition to clubs. In other words,
the local economy to a certain extent
depends on a certain amount of share
houses functioning unimpeded by the
code enforcers.
“They spend money,” Shapiro noted.
“It’s an economic stimulus package.
Some [of the houses] have been around
for 50 years, whether they are legal on
the books or defacto illegal, the rules
on the books are enforced if necessary.”
Shapiro’s apparently wide reach may
prove his own undoing. “I’m on his list,”
Betts noted wryly. “I get his e-mails all
the time.”
“I’ve never met him directly,” Shapiro
said of Betts. “The Hamptons has a lot
to offer. It needs to develop a better PR
image.”

The pundits think they know what’s
going on. “They’re being sued for $300
million!” “No, it’s at least $500 million!”
“Who are you kidding, they’re being
sued for $1 billion!” These are the
rumors Mets fans have heard since the
lawsuit against Sterling Equities and
the Wilpons was brought by Irving
Picard, trustee for the liquidation of
Bernie Madoff’s assets. As Mets fans,
why should we care so much about the
Wilpons’ personal financial situation?

I don’t think Fred Wilpon would care
much if I was being sued or filing for
bankruptcy. If the Mets owners are able
to sell a 25 percent share in the team then
it’s business as usual, right? I don’t know.
We don’t know. It’s foolish to speculate
what the Wilpons’ financial situation
means to the Mets going forward. We have
no idea how intertwined the Wilpons’
finances are with the Mets finances. I

at this point. At least there I get sun,
a roll of the dice and a chance to
double my money when the economy
recovers. Not so sure that buying a
share of the Mets at this point has a
whole lot of upside.
What we can’t deny about this team
if healthy, is that the lineup has a ton
of firepower. Jose Reyes, Jason Bay,
Carlos Beltran, and David Wright have
the potential to generate many a big

into contention come late summer?
Possibly. However, if the Mets are out
of it come July, does Alderson look to
deal Reyes, especially if he’s having
an all-star caliber season and can
command a steep price? If Carlos Beltran
reverts to 2006 form will Sandy look
for potential suitors before Beltran’s
contract expires? If Johan Santana
comes back in June and by the end of
July looks like the Santana of yore, will
Sandy look to unload him? My feeling is
that despite what ownership says, we’ll
know much more about their financial
condition by their actions. If the Mets
engage in a talent dump come the
summer, that will foretell the direction
of the franchise. Will they then embrace
a movement to build from within, a
costly alternative, or will the Wilpons
limp along until they are forced to sell
the team? We’re still on chapter 1 of this
book. Will we get to chapter 7 or even
chapter 11? Stay tuned.

Playoff Berths Crystallize

Local hoop teams have been pining
for it since practice began in November
– a berth in the county playoffs, and
perhaps even a shot at a state title.
On Februar y 7 Mattituck beat
Hampton Bays 54-45, assuring the
Baymen would not make the playoffs
this season. The Tuckers, though, 9-2
in League VII and 13-4 overall, advance
to the Class B playoffs. Tom Ascher is
a big reason, averaging 18.6 points
per game, the 15th highest scorer in
points. On Friday Ascher exploded
for 34 in a lopsided 84-67 home court
win versus Southampton that sent
a not-too-subtle message: you want
no part of us in the playoffs. Yianna
Rauseo added 14 and Steve Ascher 13.
Shaundell Fishburn, with 17, led the
losers.
As of now it looks like Mattituck
will play at home Tuesday against
Wyandanch or Babylon in the Class B
opener, and Southampton would play
at Center Moriches the same day. The
Perennial Class D powerhouse
Greenport has moved up to the next
highest enrollment division, Class C,
but still looks like the team to beat. The
Porters annihilated Shelter Island 72-27
at home Friday, and Dantre Langhorne,
arguably the best player in the county,
notched another triple double with 20
points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. Jalen
Shelby added 17.
Greenport and Stony Brook will vie
for the top seed in Class C and will be
favored to meet in the finale on Tuesday;
Port Jefferson and Southold will likely
be in the tournament. The first round
is slated for Saturday on the higher
seed’s court.
February 25 in the Suffolk CD title game;
win or lose, the Cosmos are in the State
Class D tournament and will play March
8 at Farmingdale State College.
Girls Hoop
Stony Brook will be the number one
seed in the Class C tourney; Pierson/
Bridgehampton (8-3 in League VIII) and
Mercy/McCann are vying for the second
seed and will probably face off Tuesday.
Southold will likely play Stony Brook
Tuesday. Shelter Island will represent
Long Island in the state D tournament
and also play the Class C champ in the
county tournament; keep an eye on the
