GLOBAL CHALLENGES IMPACT ON SPORTS

BENEFITS OF SPORTS
▪ Have the ability to build/strengthen relationships between rivals and
bring hope/relief during hard times
▪ Sports is a $100 billion dollar industry in the US and employs
hundreds of thousands of people
WORLD EVENT: COVID-19
▪ Covid-19 has spread to almost every country in the world
▪ People have had to socially and physically distance from others
▪ Almost all sporting events were either cancelled, postponed or played
differently
▪ Cancelled – most all youth/school sports
▪ Closed – gyms, parks and other exercise places
▪ Postponed – Olympics and Paralympics for the first time ever!
▪ Played differently – Hockey isolated their players throughout playoffs, in other
sports, games are happening without fans watching

▪ Loss of sporting events and activities


▪ Cost the industry over $12 billion plus many lost their jobs
▪ Took away people’s past-times and prevented them from being able to relieve
stress
▪ Sports franchises have had to think differently about how to show games and
keep fans interested
WORLD EVENT: HURRICANE KATRINA
▪ This hurricane devastated all of New Orleans – 3 million
were without power and 80% of the city was flooded
▪ The New Orleans Saints football stadium – the Superdome was used as a
shelter throughout the storm and during the recovery
▪ One year later, the team was finally able to return home to play
▪ They revived the spirit of the city and almost made it to the Super Bowl!
▪ Restaurants and other small businesses benefited from their return

▪ A number of NFL players – Eli and Peyton Manning, Warrick Dunn as well
as others donated supplies and raised money for the relief efforts
WORLD EVENT: COLD WAR
▪ The US and former Soviet Union (today Russia) were
“fighting” each other in politics, foreign policy, other
countries, military spending and even sports from 1947-1991, trying
to “out do” one another without getting into a real war.
▪ Sports were an easy and visible way to show-off
▪ 1972 Olympic games – USSR won the basketball game against the US, but the
US did not agree and the silver metals are still unclaimed – even today
▪ 1980 Olympic games –
▪ Winter - underdog US Hockey team beat the Soviet Union and ended up winning
gold
▪ Summer – US boycotted the games altogether and the USSR
dominated all other countries
SUMMARY

▪ Sports have helped people of the world through many challenging events in history.
