Laboratory Sheet 1
Where to submit laboratory reports: Electrical Machines Laboratory, Factory 2, Technology Campus
Unless there are extenuating circumstances, work handed in after the hand-in date will receive a mark no
greater than 40%; if handed in after the cut-off date (1 week after the hand-in date) the mark will be 0%.
Student Handbook of Regulations: Please refer to procedures for students wishing to claim extenuating
circumstances. Please also read about plagiarism and the procedures and penalties for dealing with it.
You are advised to keep copies of all your laboratory reports in case of difficulties.
The signature below confirms that you have read and understood the regulations concerning hand-in deadlines,
penalties for late submission, plagiarism and extenuating circumstances procedures and that the work submitted is
your own.
This assignment will NOT be marked unless the following section is fully completed.

DC Generator Characteristics
Understand and explain the effect of speed to the field current during the operation of dc generator
2.0 EQUIPMENTS/COMPONENTS
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1. No characteristics
1. Construct the circuit for DC generator, separately-excited simulation model in the SIMULINK as shown
in the circuit diagram Figures 1.
Figure 1
2
3. First run the drive motor up to a speed of 2250 rpm
4. Use the field regulator to set the exciter currents specified in the table
5. Begin at If.= 0 mA
6. Measure and record the generator voltage VG produced at each speed as you lower the speed step by
step in according with table 1.
7. Plot the generated voltage VG versus rotor speed n for If = 0 A, 0.5 A and 1.0 A in one graph.
1. Set the If at its 100% value. Record the parameters at different load as in Table 2.
2. Set the If at its 50% value. Record the parameters at different load as in Table 3.
P 2=U G × I a (Watts)
4. Plot the generated voltage and electrical output power versus armature current in one graph for If (100%)
5. Plot the generated voltage and electrical output power versus armature current in one graph for If (50%)

The graph shows the result of electrical power increase when the value of armature current increase but the
voltage approximately constant when the value of armature current increase (100%).

2. Why does the generator produce a low voltage at an exciter current of I = 0 mA?
When there is no current produce, its mean there is nothing to cut the flux in the machine because of
no back emf produce.
