III. Structure and Function

See Figure 1 for the appearance of sound level meter, which consists of microphone, pre-amplifier
and main unit. Pre-amplifier is a part of the main unit and cannot be unscrewed. The testing
capacitor microphone should be installed on the pre-amplifier when working. The shape of sound
level meter is tapered for reducing the reflection of sound waves. The nominal effect of shell
inflection of sound level meter and directional characteristics of sound level meter in different
incidence directions, please refer to Annex C. The shell is modeled by ABS plastic, the batteries
are installed in the battery case, you can replace the batteries quickly after removing the battery
cover. All the keys are push button switches and they are located on the front middle of the sound
level meter. The sensitivity adjustment is located on the bottom left of the instrument. Overload
indicator is located on the up front, the external power socket is located on the right side of the
bottom of the sound level meter, there is an 8-core network interface socket and a two-core stereo
jack on the bottom of sound level meter, please refer to Figure 2, 3 and 4 for the definition and use
of pin.

AC output after the A weighting, 4-pin output voltage amplitude is about 10mV/Pa The maximum
of output voltage is about 0.7V, and the output impedance is about 100Ω. High-impedance
monitoring headphone can be connected to it. The suggested input impedance of external
equipment is above 10KΩ.
DC output voltage is proportional to A weighting F file sound pressure level, output voltage
aptitude is about 20mV/dB, output impedance is about 1KΩ.
IV. Use Method
4.1 Preparation before use
(1) Please check whether the capacitor microphone and pre-amplifier are installed well.
(2) Please check whether the batteries are installed well, if not installed, open the back battery
cover of sound level meter and install the battery according to the correct polarity.
(3) If necessary, use sound calibrators for sound level meter calibration, as for the calibration
method, please see Chapter V.
(4) Sound level meter should be regularly (e.g., every year) sent to the measurement department
for verification to ensure the accuracy.
4.2 Measurement of sound pressure level Lp
Release after pressing the start button for about 1 second, a liquid crystal display on the instrument
all lights, after 2 seconds it can work normally. If LCD displays abnormally, press the "ON/Reset"
button again. The value displayed on the instrument is A weighting sound pressure level Lp. LCD
display refreshes every one second, the actual sound pressure level Lp is the maximum sound
level within one second. If the measured noise fluctuates largely, causing the indication value vary
widely, press "F/S" button, make the bottom left of the display show S, it can increase the average
time and reduce the change of indication value. Press button "F/S" again, and at this moment "S"
if closed is shown on the bottom left of display, and "F" if open Click the Off button, and if all the
LED on the instrument are off, meaning the instrument is shut down.
4.3 Measurement of the maximum Lmax
If measurement of Lmax is necessary, just press the "Lp/Lmax"button once, and the sign "HOLD"
is shown on the left side of screen, while "XX.X" displayed is the Lmax value. Keep this value.
Only when sound level exceeds this value, would new maximum value be shown. Then press the
"Lp/Lmax" button again to make "HOLD" sign disappear on the display, and we will go back to
Lp measuring situation.
4.4 Overload and indication
When the sound level monitored exceeds the upper limits of maximum measurement range, sound
level meter would show overload with "overload" light-on on the top of display. When
overloading disappear, the arrow tip would disappear. With "overload" light-on, although test
result is incorrect, the instrument wouldn't suffer damage.
4.5 Setting of time weighting
Time weighting has two options, one is F (fast), and the other is (slow). When testing sound level,
the user can set the time weighting to S if the difference between up and down is too big. When
switch F to S by pressing "F/S", and if "S" is displayed on the bottom left of the display, then the
average option is "S" Press this button once more, "F" would be shown in the same area of display
meaning that the time weighting is set as F gear.
4.6 Use of fan housing
When test in windy place, use fan housing to reduce the influence of wind noise. Users can choose
different fan housings. When SR35x60 fan housing is chosen, its capacity to reduce noise level is
10dB to 15dB. After sound level meter is installed with fan housing, about the effect on free field's
property of sound level meter, please see Annex D (The figure also illuminates the effect on
directional property)
4.7 External power source
On the bottom of the meter, there is USB power socket, which allows external power source to
connect with sound level meter. Voltage range of external power source is 4.5V-5.5V. When the
meter is in long-time use, lithium cell or external power source is recommended.
4.8 Battery check and exchanging
When sound level meter is working, it can automatically check if the battery power is enough or
not, if power is not enough, the meter display would show "Lowbat" on the top left. Remind for
battery change. 1 minute after battery undervoltage, the meter would shut down automatically.
Take off battery cover plate and then battery, replace new battery, and cover back the plate, after
that, instrument can work normally.
4.9 Energy saving function
Over 900s without any operation, the instrument would shut down automatically. If you want to
cancel this function, keep pressing the "Lp/Lmax" button, press the power or reset button once,
and release former button after the instrument displays the sound pressure level normally.
V. Calibration
The instrument is calibrated when leaving the factory, so there generally is no need to calibrate
again However, if the instrument hasn't been used for a long time, or its microphone is replace, or
the instrument is maintained, the calibration is necessary.
Calibration normally refers to sound calibrating with type AWA6221B sound level calibrator
(Level 2). The calibrator generates constant sound pressure with frequency 1,000Hz, sound level
94.0dB and the calibrating value is 93.8dB as this instrument uses Φ12.7mm (1/2 inch) free field
response microphone. Insert the sound level calibrator with (1/2 inch) responder into microphone,
turn on instrument power, and switch to "F" and "Lp" situation, after 5s preheating, press
calibrating button once, and at this time the instrument should indicate 93.8dB If the offset is more
than 0.5dB, use small screwdriver to adjust "calibration potentiometer" till the instrument
indicates 93.8dB.
If the sound pressure level of calibrator is not 94.0dB, then take the result of calibrator sound
pressure level deducting 0.2dB as the calibration sound pressure level value to calibrate the
instrument. Because this instrument only has Frequency A weighting, so calibrator with other
frequency is not available.
VI. Information Provided for the Purpose of Measurement
