2 Bare Metal Restore
BMR 3.2.1 QuickStart Guide for Tivoli Storage Manager

Introduction
Why should I read this document?
Please take a moment to review this document before installing BMR in your environment. It will save you time and will prevent
installation problems.
Bare Metal Restore is not an off-the-shelf program that you can install on your system. Before installation, you must check the
availability of certain services and protocols which BMR will require during the setup of servers and clients and during the restore of a
downed machine. Some system administration experience is required to do these one time tasks.

Help
The following Help tools are available for all platforms:
• Online Help is available through your browser
• The User Guide is available as a PDF file on the CD-ROM and via the TKG Support web site at www.tkg.com/support
• Release Notes (readme)
• This QuickStart Guide

Terminology
BMR Main Server
The BMR main server provides the BMR administrative functions. It holds the BMR database, maintains licensing information,
and hosts the GUI administrative interface. The BMR server requires a minimum of processor time, and could be installed on a
small machine, depending of your network layout and the BMR clients that you will add. The BMR server must be a UNIX
machine. You only need one BMR main server per network.

BMR Boot Server

The boot server holds the network boot image for Unix clients. One or the other boot server must have the same OS type as the
BMR clients it serves. In the case of Solaris and HP, the boot server must also be a BMR file server.

BMR File Server

The BMR file server contains the Shared Resource Tree (SRT). UNIX BMR clients must have the same OS type as their BMR file
server. For NT and Windows 2000 BMR clients, any of the supported UNIX BMR file servers can be used.
Refer to the BMR User Guide for more information on requirements for the BMR file servers.
Note: For Solaris and HP-UX: file and boot servers must always be present on the same physical machine.

BMR Client(s)
The BMR client is the machine that you want to protect with BMR.

Server
The Enterprise Storage Manager (ESM) server used to back up files on a BMR client. Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is
supported.

Shared Resource Tree

For UNIX, the SRT is a network or CD-based root file system used during client restoration. For Windows, the SRT is a collection
of software necessary to install a minimal OS for a client being recovered. The SRT is composed of the following components:
• The minimal OS (Kernel), filesets (UNIX), or install files (Windows)
• The TSM client software

The Kernel Group, Inc. BMR v3.2.1

Introduction 3

• Optional: third party applications and drivers. For Solaris, this may include Veritas Volume Manager and File System
The SRT is built by you, on the file server for UNIX platforms or using one of the BMR clients for the Windows platforms. You will
be prompted for the OS install disks and for 3rd party software.
For more information on how to build the SRT, refer to the BMR User Guide for each operating system.

Supported Operating Systems for BMR Servers and Clients

Operating System Version BMR Compatible
AIX 4.x, 5.1 Server & Client
Sun Solaris 2.6, 7, 8 Server & Client
HP-UX 10.20, 11.00, 11i Server & Client
Windows NT Server, Advanced server Client only
Windows 2000 Professional, Server, Client only
Advanced server

Supported Storage Manager Version

Tivoli: ADSM 3.1, TSM 3.7, TSM 4.1, TSM 4.2

TSM Server: Pre-Install Checkpoints

The BMR main server must be an TSM client. The installation procedure requires an installed TSM client configuration file present on
the client system in order to find the TSM servers configuration. The BMR main server will also need full access to the backed-up files
of the BMR client.
• BMR main server and BMR client machines must have the TSM client software installed and configured
• TSM client version(s) (EU chars need TSM 4.1.2.12 or 4.2.0.12)
• Temporarily disable scheduled backup on target clients during the installation process
• The TSM client loaded on the BMR server must be the latest version used in your environment
• Check to make sure the TSM backups of BMR clients are successful and contain all the required OS elements

Installation Order
1. Acquire a license key.
2. Install and configure the BMR server.
3. Install and configure the BMR file and boot servers
4. Install and configure the BMR clients
5. Create shared resource trees (SRT)
6. Create boot images (BI)
7. Allocate BIs & SRTs to the BMR clients
This QuickStart Guide will walk you through Step 3. The BMR User Guide v3.2.1 provides complete configuration and restoration
procedures. Steps 5 - 7 are optional until you actually need to restore clients.

Acquire a License Key

Before installing BMR, you should have obtained a BMR License Key. Without a license key you can install the BMR server software
but you cannot add any BMR clients because the license key contains the number of machines licensed and the duration of the
license. Please contact TKG support to obtain a valid license key.
A License Key has the following format: 0E373ABHF71ICD5074CDBCC314EFTHNJ
• 32 characters
• Alpha-numeric
• Case-sensitive

BMR 3.2.1 QuickStart Guide for Tivoli Storage Manager

Important: TKG needs a unique host ID for your candidate BMR main server in order to issue a license
key. You should be aware that this key will work only on the server from which you send us the
host ID. The license key cannot be transferred to another machine!

The host ID of your candidate BMR Main server can be obtained by following command :

OS Command Line Input

AIX uname -m

Solaris hostid

HP-UX uname -i

Contact support@tkg.com to obtain the latest BMR software release. Check our Website at http://www.tkg.com for the latest version
number. Downloads (updates and patches) are available at the Download Center at www.tkg.com/support.
If you are going to install a final BMR server over a trial version, you should first remove the trial version. Instructions for removal are
located in the BMR User Guide appendix, or call TKG Support at 512-433-3300 for assistance.

Verify the Network

• Network Types.
The only fully supported client network NIC type is 10/100 mb Ethernet. If you have AIX, you can use Token Ring. Token Ring
is only supported on limited NT platforms.
• Network Components
Check the network layout. Identify routers, hubs and switches. They can be a cause of problems with network speed. Since
the restore procedure uses network boot, you should obtain a list of blocked ports or protocols. Be aware of subnets in the
network, specifically with Solaris and HP-UX, as they may help with this restriction. Solaris cannot cross subnets and needs a
local BMR file & boot server in the subnet, DHCP, or bootparam relay.
• Network Security
If you have Network security that restricts the protocols that are used by BMR, then the Media Boot is an option to replace
network boot.

Install BMR Servers

Note: The installation procedure must be performed while you are logged in as root on all BMR main, file, and boot
servers.
