At the end of the lesson, students will be able to :

1. List types of thermal processes.

2. Explain the working principle of Ultrasonic Machining (USM),
&
Waterjet Machining (WJM), Chemical Milling (CM), Chemical
Blanking (CB), Laser Beam Machining (LBM), Electron
Beam Machining (EBM), and Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC).
3. Describe the advantages and disadvantages for each type of

thermal processes.
4. State some application of thermal processes that had been
learned.
5. Explain the working principle of electrochemical machining
(ECM) and electrochemical grinding (ECG) processes.
6. Explain the factors of selecting the tool materials in
electrochemical machining (ECM).
7. Explain the function of the abrasive particle in
electrochemical grinding (ECG).

This is group assignment. Each group can have maximum of three members.

Answer all questions.

1. Machining processes that involve chip formation have a number of inherent limitations
which limit their application in industry. In view of these limitations, many non
traditional machining (NTM) methods have been developed since World War II to
address the growing list of machining requirements which cannot be handled by
conventional machining alone.
i. List the limitations of traditional machining,
ii. Name the major NTM groups and its processes, and
iii. List the advantages of NTM.

2. Choose an article on ‘ ‘ ‘‘

     from a newspaper, magazine,
website or professional journal. Summarize briefly what the technology is about and
comment on its importance to manufacturing. Please include your article(s) as an
attachment(s)

3. KKTM BP as a centre of excellence for manufacturing field in the northern region have
equipped with various high technology machines. Identify TWO advanced machining
machines and explain the specification, brands, country of origin, price, installation
requirement and any other information related to the machines. You may include
photos, interview or any other information to help your explanations.

4. From your answer in Question 3, select ONE of the machines and explain working
principles, applications, advantages and disadvantages of the machines. Please expand
your explanation with diagram, photos, videos or animations from online resources.

5. From your answer in question 4, make a simple research to find some companies
around Penang that has similar machine in their operations. Provide adequate
information such as company name, nature of business, products, location etc.

c
Please submit your assignments by:
1. A hard copy of your answers, typed, and
2. An electronic copy.

Submission date: ½ #() ½ (* + ,

It is each student͛s responsibility to ensure a functional copy has been submitted before the due
date (i.e., I am not responsible for inaccessible or corrupt file).
