UAL Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production
The Brief:

Analyse the components of modern music and realise your own music
ideas, adopting a professional methodology.

Task 1 – Songs and Song Structure

Task 2 – EP Project

Task 3 – Roles and Procedures

Task 1 – Songs and Song Structures

Your group will analyse the make up of songs, starting with the
structure and arrangement and then the musical and sonic textures
found within. There are two Logic projects to complete, and an audio
recording.
Logic Project 1: Song Structure
Listen to examples of music and then determine the different sections of at
least 3 songs.
Logic Project 2: The Listening Project
Correctly identify a number of different instruments, from classical to
traditional rock instrumentation, in a number of recorded productions.
Desert Island Discs
Select 3 songs that you would take to a desert island and, by using technical
and musical language, discuss the elements of each that you appreciate.
Choose 1 more that you would not take for critical reasons.

Task 2 – EP Project

You must create an EP that consists of 4 songs. This is not a composing

project but you are encouraged to use originality. Although the 4 songs
should have a loose theme, each should be unique. In order to show
high level production skills:
One song should be ‘acoustic’, that is to say does not contain any MIDI
instruments.
One song should be comprised of only MIDI instruments (except for vocals).
One song should use at least one musical ‘sample’ which can be looped to
form the base or a hook in a song.
One song should be a combination of multi-track recordings and MIDI.

Task 3 – Planning, Roles and Procedures

Develop a WIX site on which you must present any planning and
research, discuss equipment used and different roles explored, and an
evaluation of the project.

Assessment and Grading Information

THE MATRIX
Assignments will cover some of the different pillars of the matrix. Unit 8 will cover all of them. Refer to these
when completing all assignments.

1. Context
What were the aims of each task? Why do you think you were asked to undertake them?

(An introduction to the project is required, where you must make it clear what is expected of you).

2. Research
What research did you undertake? How was this used?

(All your research, with referencing if applicable, should be presented. Each part of the research should have
clear indication as to how and where it was used, and how effective it was).

3. Problem Solving
What were the challenges? How did you use initiative to meet these challenges?

(This section should highlight how you explored the possibilities of solving new problems. Every time you ask
for assistance, look up how to do something, use trial and error until you get the correct result, or deal with
an unforeseen issue, you are ‘problem solving’).

4. Planning and Production

Why is planning and negotiation important for these sorts of tasks? What were the different stages
throughout the project?

(Each process will have different stages, and each stage will determine how you approach the next. Aside
from research, present how you prepared for each stage, how roles within your team were decided, and how
you managed your workload to deliver products of quality within a time-frame).

5. Practical Skills
What skills and knowledge did you demonstrate throughout the process?

(This could take the form of a ‘how-to’ guide. Use diagrams and easy to follow instructions on how you have
used particular software and other recording techniques).

6. Evaluation and reflection

How did evaluation allow you to progress throughout the process?

(Evaluations of projects are not only required at the end of a process. Continual analysis should take place in
order to inform each new phase. Ask ‘how can I achieve better results?’).

7. Presentation
Does your work competently communicate your ideas to its intended audience?

(High standards of presentation should be delivered. All of your evidence, including all presentations, audio
recordings etc, should not require further explanation. Through clear labelling it should be obvious the work is
your own and relates to a specific task).
