Let us do it Together
Lesson1 : BADMINTON
HISTORY OF BADMINTON
Badminton began in India as a game called poona. Poona evolved from a children’s play
called battledore and shuttlecock, wherein players hit the flying shuttle with paddles. It was
played at first without a net. The shuttle was called the bird because it was made from goose
feathers.
There were also similar sports played in other parts of the world. In the 5 th century in China, a
sport known as ti jian zi was played by kicking a shuttlecock up in the air. In Europe, a sport
known as jeu de volant was played with the use of the secondhand rackets rather than bare feet
to kick the shuttle upward. British army officers who were earlier stationed in India introduced the
game after they called back to England. They also brought along the equipment for poona in the
1970s.
It was the Duke of Beaufort who introduced the game to the British elite in 1873 during a lawn
party at his country estate named Badminton House. It was a hit; people bagan calling the new
party sport “ the badminton game”.
By 1893, the badminton game was so popular that about 14 local clubs formed an association.
It was named Badminton Association of England to differentiate it to associations organized in the
other countries. The organization standardized the rules of the sport. With the hundreds of
tournaments across held in the world., several countries formed International Badminton
Federation in 1934. Its headquarters is at Kent, England.
The aim of the game is to hit the shuttle with a racket so the bird passes over a net and lands
inside the defenders’s playing area. If the player failed to return it, you won a rally. The defender
has the same goal. He or she should reach the bird and send it back over the net into your half
court. If you think the bird would land outside the court, the rally ends and you get a point. You
should hit the shuttle only once, unlike in volleyball where several players may touch the ball
before sending it across the net. Competitive badminton is played indoors because the bird could
be easily blown off course by the wind.

Badminton is one of the most followed and fast sport which demands utmost fitness. At
the same time, badminton is a beginner friendly sport which anyone can start without much
hesitation. In fact, playing the sport has many health advantages added to the fun. If and when

you start playing the wonderful sport, you need to work on some basics to make it the top in the
individually demanding sport. Besides, if you decide to go pro, basics are something that will
haunt you in the journey if not paid proper attention to them.
1. GRIP
The right grip in holding the racket is really
important to achieve control on shots while avoiding
the chances of a wrist injury. A proper grip will allow
you to play both backhand and forehand strokes
effortlessly.
Holding a racket is similar to a friendly handshake.
Just the thumb will be comfortably placed against
the wider surface of the handle grip. The rest of the
hand will imitate a handshake. Remember to keep
the handshake friendly, avoiding tight grip. It will
hinder the flexibility in motion and also might lead to
wrist injuries in the long term.
2. STANCE
The stance is how you stand while playing badminton, both in between a rally and before
the serve. A stable and correct stance will bring a huge change in the results due to
movement.
A. Attacking Stance
It is used to get into position before playing an
overhead forehand stroke. To stand in the attacking
stance turn your body facing the sidelines with
racket leg behind and both legs shoulder-width
apart. Now raise both racket and non-racket arm to
generate the power to attack the shuttle on its
downward trajectory.
B. Defensive Stance
To defend the opponent’s smash, you need to be
prepared with the defensive stance. Face the body
to the net and place your racket in front at waist
height, slightly pointing forward. You can keep the
non-racket arm as comfortable while ensuring a
better balance.
C. Net Stance
| Page | 5
This stance is to be ready for the opponent’s
return after playing a net shot. To play this shot,
place your foot on the racket side forward while
keeping non-racket foot at the back. Place the
racket in front of the body, slightly above waist
height while raising the non-racket arm. Shift the
body weight slightly forward to be ready to pounce
forward.

3. FOOTWORK
Badminton is played on a court with limited space,
and the athletes have to take care of the same
while playing. Footwork plays a huge role in
helping with an effective and organised
movement on the court. In fact, some coaches
even raise footwork to prime importance over
other skills.
Tips for proper footwork
Always remember the base (starting
point).
Move only 2-3 steps backwards.
Shuffle only 1 step sidewards.

4. SERVE
There can be 2 types of service in badminton, depending on the landing aim of the
shuttle.
High serve aims at the back end corner of the Unlike high serve, the low serve aims to
opponent’s court. Ideally, a good high serve the front of the court. The objective is
results in shuttle dropping steeply downwards to let the shuttle fly just above the net
at the back end of the court. In fact, a high landing in the front corner of the court.
serve is presented to opponents having ability In this case, your opponent has the
to executing a strong smash. You can always opportunity to dash forward and smash
expect a lob or a drop from your opponent as the shuttle to you if the execution is
a reply to a properly executed high serve. poor.
Generally, it is recommended to serve the
shuttle to opponent’s backhand area. This to
exploit the weaker backhand that exists in the
game of most of the players.
5. SMASH
| Page | 6
Smash is the most potent and powerful stroke
in badminton which naturally turns out to be the
most familiar term to all. The shot is basically to
hit the shuttle powerfully towards the
opponent’s body or downward on the court. A
perfectly executed smash has no defence.
6. DROP SHOT

“ Being the best is not good enough. Try harder. Just make sure having fun is a
central component of striving for excellence. ” - Carl Horowitz
Table Tennis started in England at the end of the 19 th century. After dinner, upper class
Victorians converted their dining table into version of lawn tennis. They lined books on the
middle of the table and used wooden empty cigar boxes. A ball made of string or cork was used
as the tennis ball. The game was called differently back then. Victorians called it as whiff whaff,
flim plam, and others.
In 1901, J. Jacques & Son Ltd, a ball manufacturer, registered the game pingpong as the
company’s trademark. It was later sold to Parker Brothers of the United States. In the 1920s,
the sport was revived in Europe as Table Tennis. In 1926, the International Table Tennis
Federation was formed in Berlin, Germany. A world tournament was held the following year.

2. Racket or Paddle
3.Table
The standard table for table tennis has a length of
2.74 meters, 1.525 meters wide, and 0.7 meters
high. It is made of timber and covered with a
smooth coating; the white line divides the table
lengthwise, which separates the right and the
courts.
