Jersey, made .numer-ous .9ontacts ~n' an effort to ·locate some information on su~ject orgeniz~tion. SHUr1EYKO advised that everyone he contacted did n<?t'h~veany: knowledge. of the organization ~li th one exception. This exception was an Informant

in New York Oi ty; whom he decfined to name" and who

known reliability, made available a cooy of LOUIS ADJUITC's statement of his visit\to Yugoslavia. This state~ent roflected ADAMIC spent eight months in Europe, six of them in Yugoslavia, and also reflected he had long talks 'and meetings with Marshal TITO~ and other Yugoslavian ~eaders. This statement also said that P~~~IC intended to write a book entitled, "Tito" artd he stated the conflict with the Kremlin was inevitable and that_ from a moral and political point of view Yugoslavia is correct.

behind TITO as true Marxists. ..

T-5 was recontacted December 28, 1950, at which time the informant stated

no further inrormation had been received concerning this organization.

. Communist Party faction in Yugoslav -circles in Nevi York City,. that the split in the ranks of the Communist unit among Yugoslavs in this country is quite severe and it looks as if'the pro-Tito ranks are gaining more strength as time passes.

during 19b9 and as a result of instructions received from the Tito Government in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav Consul General, AITODRAa 1!JffiKOVIC, Yfith the backing of Tanjug, official Yugoslav News Agency,

and IINovi Listll took positive 3teps to win the greatest possible number of Americans of Yugoslav eXtraction ovor to the forces of the Tito regime.' The informant stated that the founding of tho club FNY in December, 1949, was one of tho steps taken in this direction and Y/a,S camouflaged as an effort on the part of Americans of Yugoslav extraction to strengthon the ties between the .United states am the old country.

Confidential Inr'onnant'T-3 advised that NIKOLA GRUBELIC is a stockholder in the Yur,oslav-American Home and that he is well known" among Yugoslavs in this country as an ardent supporter of the regitlo of Marshal Tito. The informant stated that GRUBELIp regularly attends the functions at the Yugoslav'-ConsulaJve in NeVI York City and that he. has been axtremoly active in the subscription drives of IIHovi List.1I

They were opposed in this by a minority of pro-Ti toists and PRl'ER LNDRIC Vias a member of the latter group,

On February 1, 1951, Confidential Infonnant T-3 advised that the aforelisted officials of the Club FNY wore maintained in office" for an itrlefinite period at a merrbership rooeting held on January 26j •

. 1951, at the Yugoslav-JllOOrican Home in New York City, at which time

it was decided to' postpone tl1e election of a new admini~tration to some time in tho future. No date was set for this election.

III. AIUS .AND OBJECTIVES

"Nevi List, II issue of March 15, 1950, page 2, columns 3, 4, and 5, sets forth the purpose of Friends of Nei'l Yugoslavia as follOl'ls:

(1) To strengthen friendly relations between the Uni ted States an~ YugO's1avia and to urge :~ericons of Yugoslav descent to condemn the conflict forced upon Yugoslavs by the Comfnformj

(2) In order that basic aims sho\lld be carried out, the.

club should dovelop interest in the activities of the group by showing of Yugoslav films ani giving of lectures concerning the conflict of the

Cominform and the Yugoslav Government" -

(3) The article points out that FNY condemns the newspapers, "Danica," "American Sbrobran,'! "NarO'dni Glasn:ijc,1I and,IIS10bodna Rec," and stated that the club would popularize and spread; IINovi List" which it ,considers as its official organ.

'Confidential Informant T-9, of known reliability, advised on Januar.y 8, 1951, that the newspaper "Danica!J is an anti-Communist Croation newspaper published in Chicago, Illinois,. which is bitterly anti-Tito in its politicul views.

The newspaper, "A.1'Jlerican Sbrobran" is an' an~i-Cormnunist· and anti-Tito, Serbian newspaper' published in, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to information furnished by Confidential Informant T-9.

This informant also pointed out that "Narodni Glasnik" is a Croation nowapaper published at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which regularly foll~{s the pro-Stalin Communist rn~ line and has beon known to bitterly denounce pro-Tito views •

Regarding "Slobodna Rec," th~s informant advised on Janl¥lI'Y 12, 1951, that· this is a Serbian newspaper- which is being published in Pittsburgh, Pcnnsy'lvama and which consistently follows the Communis:t Party line.

Confidential Informant T-3 advised on January 18, 1951, that the aims of' FNY w(3re stipulated as follOl','S at the meeting held on December 13, 1949, c.t the Yugoslc.v-American Home in New York City.

The club proposes to work among .. 'i.mericc.n citizens of Yugoslav descent in the oulttlral and' polit:i:cal fields, to hold socicl functions such

as concerts, dances, etc., and to use these gatherings as an appropriate

r .means for spreading information on the background of tho Cominform-

Tito split and on the progress of socialism in Yugoslnvia; this infor!llation is to be spreadbhrough lectures and the shorlip_g of Yugoslav

Anobher' basic purpose of FNY, which according to the infor~t was eAplained in the aforementioned meeting, was to be the refuting of anti-Tito articles appearing in such Serbian and Croation language papers as "American Sbrobran, II "Danica, II "Narodni Glasnik, II and IIS1obodna Rec.1I

The informant further stated :j.t was decided at this meeting that monthly mer.bership 'due~ were to be 25¢.The informant further pointed out that the club FNY has no written constitution or by-laws, and that the activities of the organization were to be based entirely on the above decisions regarding the aims and purposes of .the club am on additional resolutions as may be passed by the membership from time to time in the future.

The December 23, 1949 issue of "Novi List," page 3, columns 1 and 2, carried an article under the heading, "Club Friends of New Yugos luviaoII It is sta.ted in this article that in view of the intermtionoJ. situation and in vim/ of Yugoslavia's' position in the Vlorld to,day sevoral "good patriotic eounbrymen and,friends of the Yugoslav peop'le" feel the need for orga'1izing a new club ~ New' York for the

purpose of gathering all those who in the -pasb have been and nay are good friends' of Yugos J.a.via. It is stated in the article that sum an organteatd.on, to be known as Friends of New Yugoslavia, was founded

on December 13, 191~9, at a public meeting at tho Yugoslav-iunerlcan Hone and that approxinntely sixty -people attended this meeting.

Concerning the scope of the club the article states that

the organization will atter.lpt to enlist "all our honest and patriotic countrymen i'mo maintain warm feelings of sYmpathy for the old country and who understand the difficulties 'i'lhich Yugoslavia has to urdergo

on her way to freedotl and independence and who approve leadership of new Yugoslavia and her attitude in the Cominfonn instigated conflict.1I

The artiCle then goes on pointing out that a ,majority o~ Americans' of Yugoslav ~xtraction in this gountry for many years have belonged ·to a large number of social and benevolent organizations but that ma~ of them had lost interest in their organizational life~ • IIbeco.use of the confusion caused by the Cominform." ~rthermore, "many of our countrymen became, dd.sgusbed as a result of the clirty i10rk of the Cominform people who" in their contemptible ways, resort tb every means wi thi~ their grasp. 11

It is further stated that a great rrajority among Yugoslavs

in this country have refused to liston to the lies.,that are being spread against the now Yugoslavia and the YugO§ lay people. The article concludes with the statement that ~he new ,organi'zatiotiJ . Friends of New Yugoslavia, welcomes all those "\,mo love their ovm people, their old country and vlho are opposed to the malicious work being carried, on against Yugoslavia."

In the above cited article, it was also pointed out that at

the meeting on Dec~r.lber 13, 1949, NIKOLfL TF;LEStt~IC, the newly elected Chairman stated <In' effort will be made to enlist at least five hundred members. :it is further stated in the article that' lIive feel certain that all people of, good will will· welcome the neYl prganization, Frierrls of New Yugoslavia, ani that they lull join -us ~nd work , .. 1. th us toward the creation of better and closer ties among our countrymen here as well

Furthermore, the informant stated that these meetings, as m-ill cis social functions, are frequently addressed by official represent~tives of the Yugoslav Government in

The infomant further stated that these: films are being distributed in"this country by IIYugoslavia Film", 81p Fifth Avenue, New York 21, NeVI York. T-3 further stated that "Yugoslavia Fim" is identical w:!-th bhe film division of the Yugoslav Information Center, 815 Eifth Avenue, which is an official agency of the Yugoslav:Governnent. T-3 advised that he had learned the above facts from pUS.\1~ Jf.NKOVIC, a former er.tployee of the Yugoslav Inf~rmation Center.

Confidential Informont T-3 pointed out that, these Yugoslav filns are being loaned b.Y the YUGoslav Info~tion Center to various pro-Tito organizations in this country including FNY for a nominal fee of $5 or less., The informant stated he-has-seen several 6f these mo~ion pictures and considers th~ as a very effective means of propagandizing ~he Tito regime among Yugoslavs in this country. .

T-14 also advised on July 20, 1950, that the club FNY'is a

new Sociali'st t70rkers Party front: group which had been forred to attractelemonts friendly to the Tito regime in Yugoslavia. The informant stated that this organization seeks to place American youth i~ direct contact 'with Yugoolav§. The group working in Philadelphia, according to the informant, advocated vis~til?g parties,' to Yugoslav' ships in American ports and was attempting to organize a pilgrimago' of young Americans to Yu~oslavia to be 'conducted from July to Scptenber, 1950.

On July 10, 1950, Confidential Informants T-15 and T-16, of known reliability, furnished a joint report refiecting that these informants· visited Mbuntain Spring camp, Washi,rigton, New Jersey, on June 30, 1950,
