CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

A. Background of the Study

The role of technology in the world of education has been ever changing. Most recently,

technology has been a new phenomenon to help motivate, differentiate, and allow students to

achieve and excel in ways that they have never been able to before [ CITATION Har16 \l 1033 ].

Technology has impacted almost every aspect of life today, and education is no

exception.1 You’ll find that classrooms across the country and the world are now incorporating

more technology based learning devices to help improve the learning ability of students, no

matter what they’re learning.2 It’s evidently seen that technology has changed education.

Technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. 3 Increasingly, schools are

moving to provide students with their own laptop computer, netbook, or digital tablet. Schools

purchased more than 23 million devices for classroom use in 2013 and 2014 alone. In recent

years, iPads and then Chromebooks (inexpensive Web-based laptops) have emerged as the

devices of choice for many schools.

Despite having various positive impacts, technology has its negative effects on

education. Some critics of educational technology also point to a recent study by the

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which found that countries where 15-

year old students use computers most in the classroom scored the worst on international

reading and math tests.4

Technology is not the solution to 21st century education; technology is simply a tool to

aid education and learning.5 Students nowadays revolve their life around technology, from the

time they wake up ‘till bedtime. They often use it for certain purposes such as doing schoolwork,

playing games, visiting social media, and many more. Thus, we seek to determine how

technology affects students in terms of learning and performance and aims to find out if

technology positively or negatively impacts a student’s learning and performance. It ought to

know the impact of technological devices.

The use of technology has become part of our daily routine. We use it everyday when we

talk on our cellphones, take selfies, video chat, play with apps, send emails, and others.

Technology has been embedded in us and has come a long way from when it first started. It has

evolved into something that students are becoming more familiar with by using it at school and at

home.

The rapid expansion of technology in students’ lives has enabled many opportunities for

their educational development. It has made their lives easier and simpler. Due to the

advancement of technology everything is easily available and possible. However, if not used

effectively or appropriately, technology can also be a headwind for students’ academic

wellbeing.

For the positive impacts, the students will be eager to listen to discussion for technology

will be incorporated during lectures. Another impact is the motivation of the students to do

learning activities for technology serves as their motivation to do so. Improved critical learning of

concepts and ideas is also one of the positive impacts of using technology for technology

provides wider knowledge for students. Lastly, students will be able to complete their task faster

which leads to increased productivity because in using technology, information is only a fingertip

away. By entering a specific topic on the internet, numerous ideas will appear in just a short

amount of time.

For the negative impacts, incorporating technology takes up to much time and causes

delay in the completion of tasks because of technical problems and other distractions. Failure to

develop basic literacy, math, and communication skills is also one of the negative impacts of

incorporating technology for the students become too dependent in using technology when a

task is given. Another, students are tempted to do other things like playing video games while

using technology for they want to take a break from all the school works that they are working

3
on. Lastly, using technology is threatening and intimidating for it can cause distraction that could

affect the student’s learning and performance while using technology.

C. Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to determine how technology affects student’s learning and

performance through the help of the following questions below:

1. Is there a significant difference between the learning and performance of students

when using technology and when using the traditional way of learning?

2. How does technology positively impacts students?

3. How does technology negatively impacts students?

D. Hypothesis

Ho:

The technology does not completely affect the students’ performance and

learning. The dependent variable, students’ learning and performance, does not solely

rely on technology. There are various factors that influence how students learn and

perform.

HI:

The incorporation of technology in education imposes both various positive and

negative effects on the learning and performance of the students.

4
E. Significance of the Study

This research study aims to determine to determine how technology affects student’s

learning and performance. The outcome and result of this study may benefit the following:

The findings of the study may serve as a suggestion to provide more educational

technology to schools that lacks educational aids/tools if technology is proven to have a positive

impact on the students’ learning and performance. On the contrary, the school may opt for

cheaper options but effective educational aids/tools such as books if technology dominantly has

negative effects on the students’ education based form the research outcome. The result of the

study may also help the school enhance their education system or teaching method to provide

better learning experience to students.

The students may also distinguish through the result of the study if technology is more

advantageous or disadvantageous in their studies in order for them to know whether they need

to maximize or minimize their use of technology for their education. The research may also

serve as basis or proof on how technology impacts their learning and performance. This study

will also help them identify ways that will help them excel in their studies.

The study may also help teachers provide better learning assessment to students and

offer enhanced education for the youth based from the outcome of the study. Also, the

information from this research can help teachers distinguish how they will utilize the use of

technology to educate the students effectively.

Lastly, this study may also be of use to future researchers who intends to conduct a

similar or related research as it may serve as an additional reference.

5
F. Scope and Limitation

This research study is focused mainly on the impact that the technology has to the students’

learning and performance. The respondents of the study are limited only to the Grade 11 STEM

students of Cherished Moments School. The researchers will survey a total of 29 students. The

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature

Overview: Technology in Education

Technology started to advance in the 20th century and is still advancing till this

21st century. Technology has changed many things and that does not exclude education.

Today’s students see themselves as digital natives, the first generation to grow up surrounded

by technology like smartphones, tablets and e-readers.7 According to Dr. Mohammed Al

Muhtadi, there are many technological advances that have changed the world of education in

the 21st century. Knowing about these advancements and the impact they have on education

around the world will show just how essential technology is to education.

There’s the booming education technology industry, with corporate titans and small

startups alike vying for a slice of an $8 billion-plus yearly market for hardware and software.

Much attention is also paid to the “early adopters”—those districts, schools, and teachers who

are making the most ingenious and effective uses of the new tools at their disposal. 8 The

students of today are surrounded by technology, where access to information is only a fingertip

away. It has been said that technology integration is helpful, meaningful, and necessary for a

school to function successfully.9

The role of technology in the field of education is fourfold: it is included as a part of the

curriculum, as an instructional delivery system, as a means of aiding instructions and also as a

tool to enhance the entire learning process. Thanks to technology; education has gone from

passive and reactive to interactive and aggressive.10

Impact of technology

The impact that technology has in schools today is quite significant as technology in

education has the power to transform how people learn. Technology in the classroom became

more predominant by improved learning, increased engagement of students and virtual

programs. Technology now can be seen as an investment for productive learning as teachers

want more technology in their classrooms. The widespread adoption of technology in

schools has changed the entire scenario of how students learn. Teachers are working on how to

teach with emerging technologies and students are using advanced technology to enhance their

learning and knowledge.11

Positive Impacts of Technology

Technology positively affects student engagement, enabling students to retain and learn

more information. A PBS LearningMedia survey of pre-K-12 teachers researched the types of

technology teachers are using in classrooms, how they are using technology in their

classrooms, and their overall attitudes toward technology. The results showed that three-

quarters of teachers surveyed had a positive opinion of educational technology, stating that

technology assists them in reinforcing and expanding on content.12

Early studies indicate that effective technology integration results in a host of positive

educational benefits, including increased student engagement, motivation, organization,

efficiency, and creative, real-world applications students find rewarding and dynamic(Banitt,

Theis, & Leeuwe, 2013).

I. Motivation and Eagerness to Learn

Technology positively impacts the classroom because it motivates students to learn.

Many students are more stimulated and eager to learn when they can interact with the hands-on

learning tools that educational technology provides (Nnodim, 2018). According to PBS Learning

Media research, 74% of teachers surveyed responded that using classroom technology

motivates students to learn. Technology in the classroom allows students to take greater control

of their education because tools like tablets and laptops encourage interactive, hands-on

learning.13

Implementation of technology in the classroom impacts how well the students progress

and improve academically. Technology has been used in the classroom for over 20 years.

Researchers have proven that technology motivates our students and they are more positive

toward school activities. When technology is used as a tool to strengthen our students and

connected with activities to build on their strengths it motivates our students to learn and

succeed.14

Technology also minimizes behavior and classroom management problems because

students are eager to learn. It also allows teachers to differentiate instruction effectively.

Teachers are able to maximize the use of multiple virtual assignments based on the students'

level of understanding.15

II. Power of Computers

Computers and the internet are technological tools that are utilized in the classroom and

enhance the students learning ability. Technology in the classroom help students develops skills

that will help them be more effective in today’s world. 16 The computer will give the student the

chance to strengthen their skills with these machines as society grows more dependent on them

for every day functions in life.17 Today's students not only have computers to help them with

their schoolwork, they have easy access to research tools while teachers use technology to

enhance the impact of their lessons.18 It has been said that technology integration is helpful,

meaningful, and necessary for a school to function successfully (Francis, 2017).

A. Easier Dissemination of Information

Technology allows the most difficult tasks to become seamlessly easy and more

efficient. In education, technology has allowed the dissemination of knowledge to be dispersed

instantly and it allows for quicker and more effective communication. Also, technology has

allowed students to be engaged and learn in ways that they never have in a classroom setting

before.19

The use of computers, the Internet and interactive whiteboards has opened up a world of

opportunity to students, who consequently have access to a great deal more information, which

can help them learn and conduct research topics. The Internet has played a huge role in making

such information accessible. 20

With an Internet connection, we have access to information at our fingertips 24 hours a

day. We can find almost anything online, in its most up-to-date version. For students, this

means access to everything from research materials and educational apps to interactive

edutainment and open resources from prestigious universities around the world. They may,

however, need instruction on how to find credible resources and direction on providing proper

attribution when they use them.21

B. Collaboration

Students can also supplement their learning by connecting with online groups and virtual

communities in real time, or by collaborating on group projects with tools such as wikis and

cloud-based apps.

Using social networking as part of the learning process can also have benefits. Students

who are more introverted may open up and connect more with faculty and other students when

they are communicating through social networking. It also affords students the opportunity to

collaborate and work together in a whole new way.

Information technology helps teachers and learners to participate cooperatively in the

teaching learning process. It broadens their thinking, knowledge and enables them to perform

various educational activities in the educational sector. Various kinds of technologies both

hardware and software makes the teaching-learning process more interesting. Use of the

advanced technologies has a tremendous scope in improving the products and processes of

education. It fulfills many needs and requirements of the present age in the field of instruction

and education like individualization of instruction, utilization of multi-sensory and multi-media aid

material and efficient and effective management of different educational institutions.22 In addition

to improving academic performance and interest in learning, improving literacy and the general

erudition of students, various types of thinking are activated through telecommunication, the

development of creative and intellectual potential takes place. Observations show that work in

computer networks actualizes the need for students to be members of a social society.23

Education technology can make learning more interactive and collaborative—and this

can help students better engage with course material. Rather than memorizing facts, they learn

by doing. This could be as simple as taking an interactive quiz in class or participating in tech-

enabled group discussions or as involved as playing educational games, practicing science

experiments in a virtual lab or taking a virtual field trip (Himmelsbach, 2019).

III. Speed and Efficiency in Performing Tasks

Another benefit for students and teachers alike is the speed at which students may learn, as

technology has reduced the time required to create or access resources. There are also very

few occasions when a student will be required to take lengthy notes because printed information

is available to them. Teachers and students also save time by using the computer to complete

work rather than spending time writing out work and drawing diagrams (Nuttal, 2018).

Digital technology will help make students more self-sufficient. With computer

administered programs incorporated into education, such as quizzes or even class discussions,

students will become quicker, tangential searchers on information they may not understand as

well as for information on class assignment.24

13
IV. Real-World Applications

New educational technologies are especially important for those involved in fieldwork,

new types of hands-on subjects, or training in design. For instance, Assistant Professor Admir

Masic recently led a student group summer field trip to Italy with unprecedented access to

ancient art, archaeology, and architecture.25

V. Improvement of Language Skills

The use of technology has become an important part of the learning process in and out

of the class. Every language class usually uses some form of technology. Technology has been

used to both help and improve language learning. Technology enables teachers to adapt

classroom activities, thus enhancing the language learning process. Technology continues to

grow in importance as a tool to help teachers facilitate language learning for their learners. This

study focuses on the role of using new technologies in learning English as a second/foreign

language. It discussed different attitudes which support English language learners to increase

their learning skills through using technologies (Ahmadi, 2018).

Negative Impacts

I. Failure to Develop and Use Basic Literacy, Math and Communication Skills

One of the major concerns about technology in the classroom is that it prevents students

from developing and using basic literacy, math and communication skills, all of which are

essential in both day-to-day living and working life. The exclusive use of computer-based tools

such as spelling and grammar checkers, as well as calculators, enables students to complete

assignments without knowing how to manually perform those same functions.

http://news.mit.edu/2016/using-educational-technology-enhance-student-learning-0805. Accessed on February 9, 2020

14
II. Delayed Completion of Tasks because of Technical Problems

A common problem in classrooms is also the failure of technology due to technical

difficulties. While equipment is being repaired, students experience delays in their learning. This

counteracts the time-saving benefits of technology. To prevent learning loss due to these

difficulties, teachers must be prepared with other resources and task assignments.

III. Loss of Focus and Temptation to do Other Things

A serious negative effect of technology on teens' education is the distraction that it may

pose within the learning environment. The opportunity to access social network sites and games

can tempt students away from planned learning activities. Such distractions can hamper their

overall progress and their potential to succeed (Nuttal, 2018).

IV. Threatening and Intimidating to Use

Social networking is a great example of technology that can help — or hinder —

education, depending on how it is used and integrated into teaching plans. Privacy and security

are two concerns that can come with using social networking in the classroom. It can also

become a distraction to students, or even a tool used for bullying. According to a 2011 Pew

report, 15% of children surveyed said they had been the victim of mean behavior on social

networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This makes the usage of technology threatening

and intimidating26

Textbook vs. Technology

It is believed that using a tablet opposed to a textbook is a better way for students to

learn. Technology based instructions apparently can reduce the time that students take to reach

15
their learning objective. A survey of technology used in classrooms by the Public Broadcasting

Services in 2012 in America shows that teachers found that tablets increased student motivation

to learn compared to textbook learning (Public Broadcasting Services, 2012). Tablets have also

helped to improve student’s achievements regarding tests, students scored twenty percent

higher on tests by using a tablet compared to students who used textbooks in 2012

(ProCon.org, 2017). On the other hand, students that read print textbooks remember more and

comprehend more than students who use tablets for classroom work and homework. Textbooks

also stop students from cutting corners and cheating on school work because when using a

tablet, students can avoid reading full texts by looking up passages in an e-book also there is

the opportunity of searching for answers on the internet without doing the required research.

This in turn could explain the twenty percent increase in grades in tests achieved in 2012 as

explained previously. Textbooks could be a better option for teachers as many teachers would

not be computer savvy and could find it easier to teach the traditional way (National Education

Association, 2013). Therefore, teachers might not be able to reach their full potential if they are

not fully trained on how to teach with technical devices such as tablets. Although, in America to

support the change from textbook to tablet, the federal government and several technology

organizations have collaborated a seventy-page guide called “Digital Textbook Playbook”

(Federal Communications Commission, 2012). This could ensure that the transition from

textbook to tablet is efficient and easy for the teachers.27

Blended Learning

In its simplest terms, blended learning combines traditional, teacher-to-student lessons

with technology-based instruction.

Many schools and districts use a “rotation” model, which is often viewed as an effective

means of providing students with more personalized instruction and smaller group experiences.

In some cases, saving money (through larger overall class sizes, for example) is also a goal.

The basic premise involves students rotating between online and in-person stations for different

parts of the day. There are many versions of this approach, however: Do students stay in the

classroom or go to a computer lab?

One big trend for schools involves trying to make sure that what happens online is

connected with what happens during face-to-face interactions with teachers. That could involve

giving teachers a say in selecting the software that students use, for example, or making a

concerted effort to ensure online programs provide teachers with data that is useful in making

timely instructional decisions (Herold, 2016).

CHAPTER 3

Methodology

A. Research Design

This research is a qualitative and descriptive study. The study aims to portray the effects

of technology to students’ learning and performance, thus, this method fits to provide answer to

the general question. Through this method, the positive and negative effects of technology in

education may be identified and recognized.

17
B. Collection of Data

Regarding the collection of data, the researchers gather from different websites,

previous studies that are related to the topic, and PDFs.

The researchers will also conduct a survey on the 29 Grade 11 STEM students of

Cherished Moments School. The survey consists of two parts where the first asks about the

positive and negative impacts of technology on the students and the second asks about which

learning medium or aid helps them learn better.

C. Analysis of Data

The data gathered is processed and tabulated. The answer of each respondent from the

positive and negative effects is averaged to classify if he/she strongly agrees, agrees,

disagrees, or strongly disagrees from these positive and negative effects through the averaged

score. After classifying their response, they are analysed to which is dominant, the positive

impacts or the negative impacts, and which helps them learn better, by incorporating

technology, listening to lectures and reading books or by blending them together. Interpretation

is done through the use of mean and point estimate and the conclusion is based on the

analysed data, whether technology entails greater amount of positive or negative effects on the

students’ learning and performance and there a significant difference between the learning and

performance of students when using technology and when using the traditional way of learning.

Chapter 5

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation

This chapter presents a brief summary of the research, the conclusion drawn from the

result of the survey questionnaire, and the recommendation for further related research on the

topic.

A. Summary

21
Aside from books, technology has become a medium or aid for learning. Incorporating

technology during lectures has become helpful for students to learn and perform better.

Efficiency in performing tasks, eagerness to learn and listen, improvement of critical learning of

concepts and ideas, improvement of language skills, and motivation to do learning activities

were observed in the study through the questionnaire to determine the positive effects of

technology, while temptation to do other things, threatening and intimidating, time consuming,

loss of focus, technical difficulties, and failure to develop and use basic literacy, math and

communication skills were observed as well to determine the negative impacts of technology on

students’ learning and performance.

B. Conclusion

The respondents were surveyed regarding the positive and negative impacts of

technology and how these impacts are affecting their learning and performance and also which

learning medium or aid helps them learn better. 37.93% of the respondents strongly agree that

technology positively impacts their learning and performance and 51.72% agree while 10.34%

disagree that technology positively impacts their learning and performance and 0% strongly

disagree. On the contrary, 19.54% strongly agree that technology negatively impacts their

learning and performance and 40.23% agree while 29.31% disagree that technology negatively

impacts their learning and performance and 10.92% strongly disagree. The researchers

therefore conclude that the incorporation of technology in education imposes both various

positive and negative effects on the learning and performance of the students. However,

technology imposes more positive effects than negative effects on the learning and performance

of the students.

Another conclusion, regarding which learning medium or aid helps the students learn

better, is also formulated. 44.83% of the respondents said that technology helps them learn

22
better while 17.24% said that books and lectures help them learn better. The remaining 37.93%

said that technology, books, and lectures are the learning medium or aid that helps them learn

better. Therefore, the researchers conclude that technology is the dominant learning medium or

aid.

C. Recommendation

The researchers recommend incorporating technology in the education of students but

with limitations to avoid negative effects on students’ learning and performance. Since this

research limits its respondents to Grade 11 STEM students of Cherished Moments School, the

researchers also recommends that further studies should be done on a larger scale of

respondents to fully determine the impacts of technology on students’ learning and

performance.
