Answer all questions

1. (a) When do you prefer nonparametric test than parametric test. Distinguish between
Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney U test. [4 Marks]

(b) Suppose we wish to compare two different types of eye drops (A, B) that are intended
to prevent redness in people with hay fever. We find that for 15 randomly selected people
with an equal amount of redness in each eye at baseline, after 10 minutes the drug A eye
is less red than the drug B eye for 2 people; the drug B eye is less red than the drug A eye
for 8 people; and the eyes are equally red for 5 people. Assess the statistical significance
of the results using the appropriate nonparametric test. [6 Marks]

(c) The following data show the effect of two soporific drugs (increase in hours of sleep
compared to control) on 10 patients. Using nonparametric test, assess a statistically
significant effect of a particular drug on sleep (increase in hours of sleep compared to
control) for 10 patients. [10 Marks]

Drug 1 Drug 2
Name of the Increase in Increase in
Patients hours of sleep hours of sleep
Kabir 0.7 1.9
Razzaq -1.6 0.8
Milon -0.2 1.1
Shah -1.2 0.1
Rahman -0.1 -0.1
Sumon 3.4 4.4
Karim 3.7 5.5
Rahim 0.8 1.6
Raju 0.0 4.6
Sawon 2.0 3.4
2. (a) (i) Show that the maximum likelihood and least square estimators give the same
estimate of 𝛽 parameter for the following model. [7 Marks]

𝑦𝑖 = 𝛽𝑥𝑖 + 𝜀𝑖 ; where 𝜀𝑖 ~𝑁 (𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 = 0, 𝑣𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 4)

(ii) The following data shows that the scores (y) are linearly related to the no. of assignment
(x) submitted by the students in a statistic course. [3 Marks]

y 6 8 10 3 0 7 9.5
x 3 4 4 1 0 3 4

For the given data, estimate the 𝛽 parameter using MLE/LS from the above model in (i).
Also, find the expected achievement scores of the students who has submitted two
assignments?

(b) (i) Find the Maximum likelihood estimate of the parameter 𝛽 for the following
function.
𝛼𝛽 𝛽
f(x) = 𝑥 𝛽+1 [8 Marks]

where 𝛼 = 1.74.

(ii) For the following data set which consists of survival time (in weeks) of 7 acute
myelogenous leukemia patients.
Survival time (in week): 3, 4, 2, 3, 8, 4, 3. [2 Marks]
Using the above model given in (i), find the probability of surviving five weeks of a
selected acute myelogenous leukemia patient.
