National Board of Wildlife Approved Advisory for Human-Wildlife Conflict Management
On January 7, 2021, the Standing Committee of National Board of Wildlife (SC-NBWL) in its 60th meeting approved
the advisory for management of Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) in the country to expedite effective inter-
departmental coordinated actions.

• The advisory envisages empowering gram panchayats in dealing with the problematic wild animals as per
the section 11 (1) (b) of WildLife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Key steps advised:
-To utilize Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna (PMFBY) for crop compensation against crop damage due to HWC.
–Augmenting fodder and water sources within the forest areasaugmenting fodder and water sources within the
forest areas.
–Payment of a portion of ex-gratia as interim relief within 24 hours of the incident to the victim or family.
–The inter-departmental committees at local or state level should adopt early warning systems, create barriers, and
dedicated circle wise Control Rooms with toll free 24X7 numbers.
–Identification of hotspots and formulation and implementation of special plans for improved stall-fed farm animals
etc.
Inclusion of Caracal in critically endangered species list:
Caracal, a medium sized wildcat found in some parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat included in the list of critically
endangered species. Currently there are 22 wildlife species under the government’s recovery programme for
critically endangered species.
• The programme was started in 2009.
Other Decision taken during the meet:
–Construction of causeway across Jampannavagu to Muthapur of Govindaraopet and between Jampannavagu to
Motlagudem in Mulugu District of Telengana with certain mitigation measures.
–Construction Tinaighat-Castlerock-Caranzol Railway doubling of South Western Railways, Karnataka
–Construction of Integrated Bus Terminus cum Commercial complex in Vashi, Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) in Thane
district.
• It will pave way for 17 bus bays and approximately 3,300 bus trips.

50th Wildlife Sanctuary.

About National Board for Wildlife (NBWL):


It is constituted by the Central Government under Section 5 A of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (WLPA). It is
chaired by Prime Minister (Current- Narendra Modi)

PM CARES Fund Trust allocates Rs 201.58 cr for installation of PSA Oxygen Plants
On January 6, 2021, the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) Fund
Trust has allocated Rs 201.58 crore for installation of additional 162 Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Medical
Oxygen Generation Plants with a total capacity of 154.19 MT in 32 States and Union Territories (UTs). These will be
installed inside public health facilities.

• The procurement of Medical Oxygen Generation Plants will be done by the Central Medical Supply Store, an
autonomous body of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
• The total project cost includes 137.33 crore rupees towards supply and commissioning of the plants and
Management fee of Central Medical Supply Store and around 64.25 crore rupees towards Comprehensive
Annual Maintenance Contract.
Key Point:
–The plants have a warranty for the first 3 years. For the next 7 years, the project includes a Comprehensive Annual
Maintenance Contract. After this, the entire Operations and Maintenance will be borne by the hospitals or States.
Benefits:
–It will strengthen the public health system by enabling adequate and uninterrupted supply of oxygen in a cost
effective manner.
–It also reduces the health facility’s dependence on the system of store and supply.
–It facilitates providing oxygen support in a timely manner to patients in these public health facilities.
Earlier allocation by Government through PM Cares Fund:
In May 2020, the Central Government allocated Rs 3,100 for the fight against COVID-19. It consisted of Rs. 2,000
crore for supply of 50,000 ‘Made-in-India’ ventilators to government run COVID hospitals in all States and UTs. Rs.
1,000 crore towards the welfare of migrant labourers and Rs 100 crore to support vaccine development.
What is PM Cares Fund?
It was set up on March 28, 2020 following COVID-19 pandemic to deal with any kind of emergency or distress
situation. The fund is used for combating, and containment and relief efforts against any kind of pandemic.
• The PM is ex-officio chairman of PM CARES Fund, while Union ministers of Defence, Home Affairs and Finance,
are ex-officio trustees of the fund.
• Notably, the fund consists entirely of voluntary contributions from individuals and organisations and does
not get any budgetary support.
• Donations to the PM CARES Fund qualify for 80G benefits for 100% exemption under the Income Tax Act,
1961.

Flipkart signs MoU with LSC to set up Centre of Excellence in Logistics Skill
On January 7, 2021, Flipkart signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Logistics Skill Sector Council
(LSC). It is LSC’s first-of-its-kind industry partnership with Flipkart to set up the industry-first Centre of
Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

• LSC is an organisation set up by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) through
National Skill Development Corporation of India (NSDC) and Karnataka Skill Development Centre (KSDC).
• It should be noted that Flipkart had partnered with LSC in 2019 to provide training to its supply chain
employees. With setting up of CoE, the company is enhancing its partnership.
About Centre of Excellence:
To be spread across an area of 1,500 square feet, the COE aims to enhance the employability of unskilled and
unemployed people in the e-commerce industry. It will be open to aspirants who want to work in the logistics
industry,
• It is set up to build a skilled and trained workforce for the fast-growing e-commerce industry in India.
• CoE envisages all round development of the candidates through an extensive training module, co-developed
with LSC & KSDC.
• Karnataka Kaushalya Mission, which is part of the Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
and Livelihood, Karnataka Government, and LSC will help in mobilization of aspirants for the CoE.
Certification:
Upon successful completion of the training, candidates will be awarded certification under the National Skill
Qualification Framework (NSFQ), which is equivalent to an undergraduate degree. This certificate is recognised
across seven countries including, Australia, Denmark, Germany and Saudi Arabia.
Additional Info:
–Flipkart has further strengthened its vernacular language by introducing Marathi, the third most widely spoken
language in India, on its platform.
–With this, the Flipkart app is now accessible in six major languages including English, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu
and Kannada.

Centre Approves New National Highway projects worth Rs 5,801 cr for Maharashtra
On January 7, 2021, Union Minister Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) informed
that the Central Government has approved Rs. 5,801 Cr for new 1035 km National highway (NH) between Surat
(Gujarat) and Bengaluru (Karnataka) to curb the vehicular pollution in Maharashtra’s Mumbai and Pune. It is
approved under the annual plan of MoRTH.

• It should be noted that the Annual Plan for NH works in Maharashtra was approved for Rs. 2,727 Cr. Now, it
has been enhanced to Rs. 5,801 Cr
• The plan also includes reconstruction of 5 major bridges and 10 minor bridges have been included at cost of
Rs. 429 Cr.
Key Points:
–Apart from above, Rs 1,800 crore projects under the Central Road Fund scheme has also been sanctioned.
–Rs 1 lakh crore greenfield Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be extended till Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) to facilitate
container traffic.
–Palkhi Marg’ connecting Pandharpur – Alandi and Pandharpur-Dehu Road will be constructed, which will have a
parallel pedestrian track.
–In order to decongest Mumbai-Pune stretch of the National Highway, a separate North-South Highway corridor from
Surat via Nashik – Ahmednagar – Solapur would be built for the traffic bound for the southern states.
–MoRTH has built 3,771 km of concrete roads in Maharashtra. The target for construction during 2020-21 is 2,500
km out of which 1,394 km have so far been completed.

Government Promulgates J&K Reorganisation (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 to merge J&K Cadre
Officers with AGMUT
Government of India promulgated an Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 by
amending the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019 to merge the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) cadre of All India Services
Officers like IAS, IPS & Indian Forest Service (IFoS) with the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram Union Territory
(AGMUT) cadre.

i.With this, officers from the Union Territories & above mentioned States can now be placed in J&K and vice
versa.
ii.The ordinance was signed by President Ram Nath Kovind amended section 13 & 88 of the Jammu and Kashmir
Reorganisation Act 2019, it was issued by the Ministry of Law & Justice.
Amendments:
Amendment in Section 88 of J&K Reorganisation Act,2019 for sub-sections (2) to (6):
• Section 88 of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019 amended.The amendment states that The members of the
IAS, IPS and IFS for the existing cadre of J&K shall be borne and become part of the Arunachal Pradesh, Goa,
Mizoram Union Territory cadre and all future allocations of All India Services officers for the Union Territory
of J&K and the UT of Ladakh shall be made to AGMUT cadres for which necessary modifications may be made
in corresponding cadre allocation rules by the Central government.
Amendment in Section 13 of J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019:
• The Ordinance also amended Section 13 of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019 by inserting the words “or any
other article containing reference to elected members of the legislative Assembly of the State”.
KeyPoints:
i.The move will help tackle the shortage of All India Services Officers in J&K owing to an earlier rule fixing the ratio of
direct recruits in Civil Services to promotees from J&K State Civil Services (Kashmir Administrative Service) at 50:50
instead of 67:33 formula followed in other states.
ii.Now, J&K cadre officers will report directly to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). As MHA will be the final
authority of service matters such as inter segment transfers of officers, promotions, foreign deputations.
iii.It will help in addressing the shortage of All India Services Officers in J&K.
iv.This is the First amendment in the Reorganisation law after it was approved by the Indian Parliament in August,
2019.

Dell Technologies, MoHFW & Tata Trusts launched ‘NCD PHC’ Mobile App to combat NCD in India
Dell Technologies, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) & Tata Trusts have collaborated
to develop a mobile application ‘NCD PHC’ for the management of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) at
Government Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across India. The app is based on Dell’s DigiLifeCare.
Target of Dell Technologies- Transforming lives of 1 billion lives with technology globally by 2030.

KeyPoints:
i.The app will further strengthen the existing NCD IT system being used by Accredited Social Health Activists
(ASHAs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Doctors, Programme managers and Health officials in the Government.
ii.NCDs like hypertension, stroke, diabetes & heart disease account for 63% mortality in India.
iii.One in four people in India face the prospect of dying from an NCD before reaching the age of 70.
iv.The app was formally launched by Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan on Universal
Health Coverage Day (On December 12, 2020).
v.According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2019 Global Health Estimates, NCD constitute 7 of the
World’s Top 10 causes of death.
NCD IT System:
Developed by Dell in 2018, it supports India’s Population Based Screening (PBS) & management of NCDs under the
National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS).

IREDA signs MoU with NHPC Ltd to develop Renewable Energy Projects
On January 8, 2021, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA)virtually signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with NHPC Limited (formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation), to
provide its technical expertise for developing renewable energy projects for the next 5 years.
i.The agreement was signed virtually by Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD), IREDA
& Abhay Kumar Singh, CMD of NHPC Ltd.
ii.As part of the Agreement, IREDA will undertake Techno-Financial due diligence (identification of suitable
technology for particular project sites) of Renewable energy and Energy Efficiency & conservation projects for NHPC.
iii.The MoU will facilitate knowledge & technology transfer between the two organizations.

iv.It will also provide consultancy & research services which will contribute to the sustainable development of the

India set to head 3 Important Committees of UNSC
Permanent Representative of India to United Nations (UN) TS Tirumurti announced that India will head 3
Important Committees of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) – Counter-Terrorism Committee (for
2022), Taliban Sanctions Committee (also called the 1988 Sanctions Committee) & Libya Sanctions Committee.
i.On January 4, 2021 India began its 8th Term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for 2 years(2021-2022).
Mexico, Kenya, Norway & Ireland also joined India as non-permanent members.

About the Committees:


Counterterrorism Committee:
i.The main function of the committee is to prevent terrorist acts within their borders & across the regions.
ii.India will chair the Committee in 2022 which will coincide with the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence.
iii.The Committee was formed in September, 2001 as a response to the 9/11 Terrorist attack in New York, United
States.
iv.India has already chaired this committee during its tenure as non-permanent member in 2011-12.
Taliban Sanctions Committee:
Also known as 1988 Sanctions Committee focuses on the presence of terrorists & their sponsors in the region of
Afghanistan.
Libya Sanctions Committee:
Libya Sanctions Committee, also called the 1970 Sanctions Committee. This committee focuses on implementation
of sanctions regime, two-way arms embargo on Libya, Asset freeze, travel ban, measures on illicit export of
Petroleum.
India’s 8th Term in UNSC:
India joined the 15-nation UNSC as a non-permanent member for the 2021-22 term.
i.It will serve as President of the UNSC in August 2021 & preside the UNSC council again in 2022.
ii.UNSC has 5 permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States & 10 non-
permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for a 2-year term.
iii.India, Norway, Kenya, Ireland & Mexico will join the other 5 non-permanent members Estonia, Niger, Saint
Vincent & the Grenadines, Tunisia & Vietnam.
Note:
The presidency of Council is rotated among each of the members in turn for one month, following English
alphabetical order of members’ state names.
10 Non-Permanent Members:
There are 5 seats for African & Asian Countries, One for Eastern European Countries, Two for Latin America and
the Caribbean & two for Western Europe and other countries.
i.India was elected unopposed to UNSC, it was the only candidate aiming for the Asia-Pacific seat.
ii.It secured 184 out of 192 votes in the election for the post of 5 non-permanent members.
Priorities of India during the tenure:
India’s priorities for the UNSC tenure will be Counter-terrorism, peacekeeping, maritime security, reformed
multilateralism, technology, women, youth and developmental issues in context of peace-building.
Previous Tenures:
India has served as a non-permanent member of UNSC in 1950, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1984, 1991 & 2011.
Sanctions Committee:
i.They are subsidiary organs of UNSC, and they are composed of 15 of Council’s members.
ii.Their main role is to implement, monitor and provide recommendations to the UNSC council on particular
sanctions regimes.
iii.They meet regularly to consider reports from expert panels & hold meetings with Member States, UN actors &
International Organizations.
iv.Since 1966, UNSC has established 30 Sanctions regimes.

i.On September 14, 2020, India & Afghanistan were elected as Members of the UN Commission on Status of Women, a
body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
ii.On 29th August, 2020 India co-sponsored UNSC Resolution for Greater Participation of women in peacekeeping

CBoI Signs MoU with NABFOUNDATION to Provide Working capital for SHGs to Undertake ‘My Pad
My Right’ Project
On January 7, 2021 Central Bank of India (CBoI) signed Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) with NABFOUNDATION to provide working capital for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to
undertake ‘My Pad My Right’ project. The project is sponsored by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural
Development(NABARD) & enables SHG’s to manufacture sanitary pads.

Provision of MoU
As per the MoU, working capital will be provided by the bank to all SHGs who have an account with it.

NSO’s Advance Estimates of GDP for 2020-21:India’s GDP to Contract by 7.7% in 2020-21
On January 7, 2021, the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation
(MoSPI) released the First Advance Estimates of National Income at both Constant (2011-12) and Current Prices, for
FY 2020-21.The growth in real GDP during 2020-21 is estimated at -7.7% as compared to the growth rate of 4.2% in
2019-20.

quarter-on-quarter basis grew at 21 percent from Q1: FY 2020-21 to Q2: FY 2020-21. TheAE of 2020-21reflect
continued resurgence in economic activity in Q3 and Q4 – which would enable the Indian economy to end the year
with a contraction of 7.7 percent.
–Nominal GDP or GDP at Current Prices in the year 2020-21 is projected to be at Rs 194.82 lakh crore, as against the
Provisional Estimate of GDP for the year 2019-20 of Rs 203.40 lakh crore.
–The growth in nominal GDP during 2020-21 is estimated at -4.2%.
–Nominal GVA at Basic Prices is estimated at Rs175.77 lakh crore in 2020-21, as against Rs183.43 lakh crore in
2019-20.
The release of Second Advance Estimates of National Income for the year 2020-21 and quarterly GDP estimate for the
quarter October-December, 2020 (Q3 of 2020-21) will be on 26.02.2021.
Additional Info for FY20-21:
–In FY20-21, the manufacturing sector is likely to see a contraction 9.4%.
–There is significant contraction in mining and quarrying, trade, hotels, transport, communication and services
related to broadcasting.
—Agriculture sector is estimated to see a growth of 3.4% in 2020-21 lower than the 4% growth recorded in 2019-
20.
—Electricity, Gas, Water Supply & Other Utility services sector is likely to grow at 2.7%.
Note- Only these above two sectors are estimated to record positive growth in GVA this 2020-21.
–Among services sectors, trade, hotel, transport are projected to contract 21.4% while financial services and public
services are estimated to contract 0.8% and 3.7% respectively.

Overview of ISRO’s Plan for the Decade 2021-30
Sivan, Secretary of Department of Space (DoS) & Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has chalked
out the plan for the Decade 2021-30. It has listed both Short-term vision & Long-term visions. The plan envisions
the development of heavy lift rockets, reusable satellite launch vehicles & semi-cryogenic engines.

Short Term vision:


i.In the short term, ISRO has plans to execute diverse missions which are
• First Developmental Flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) planned to be launched in March, 2021.
• Operational Geo-Imaging capability, which is expected to be launched in 2021.
• Chandrayaan-3 – Third Lunar Mission of ISRO expected to be launched by late 2021 or early 2022.
• Aditya-L1 – First Solar Mission of ISRO, It is expected to be launched in 2022.
• Launching of the First Indian Data Relay Satellite System (IDRSS). It is a planned constellation of Inter-
satellite communications satellite expected to be launched in early 2021.
ii.The Gaganyaan Programme India’s First unmanned flight is set to be launched in 2022.
Overall Space Policy:
i.The essential aspects of overall space policy required for facilitating space system development & operation in
the country are in final stages of drafting.
ii.The aspects include Specific Satellite Communication Policy, remote sensing data policy, space
transportation systems policy.
iii.The overall space policy will help in guiding and supporting the implementation of Space Sector reforms.
iv.The main focus will be towards self-reliance and global leadership in space systems.

AP Govt Signs MoU with University of Cambridge to Help Students & Teachers of the State to
Improve their English Proficiency
On January 8, 2021 The Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department, Govt of Andhra
Pradesh(AP) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of Cambridge. As part of the MoU, the
university will offer training to teachers and students of state municipal schools to improve their proficiency in
the English language.

• The MoU is a part of the Transformation Of Municipal Schools (TOMS) initiative taken up by the MAUD
department, AP govt.
Purpose of MoU– To help students and teachers of the state to enhance their english proficiency.
Key People
The MoU was signed by state commissioner of municipal administration GSRK R Vijay Kumar on behalf of the state
government and T K Arunachalam, regional director of University of Cambridge, South Asia in the presence of Chief
Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Provisions of MoU:
Career guidance centres
i.As per the MoU, 14 career guidance centres will be set up in all the 13 districts of the state to enhance the skill of the
students.
ii.One centre in every district headquarter and one more in Pulivendula model constituency will be established.
Training
i.University representatives will give training to 12,378 teachers working in municipal schools for english along with
more two lakh students across the state.
ii.The 30-day training programme of the teachers to teach various subjects in English
have been completed by 8000 teachers and they have passed the Cambridge Assessment English test.
iii.Currently, the remaining over 4000 teachers are receiving training.
English language labs
i.The State’s municipal administration department has established English language labs at Visakhapatnam, Kurnool
and Vijayawada for teaching the students.
ii.The study material for the students will be prepared by the teachers.
Note
In the TOMS initiative, a students’ guidance and training centre with integrated international labs, digital curriculum,
international Olympiad, and IELTS training are also included.
Infrastructure & Cost
i.All necessary infrastructure to the Cambridge university authorities to provide training will be provided by the
municipal administration department of the state govt.
ii.The university will offer free of cost training under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR scheme.)

Vijaykumar(R.V.) Malimath was appointed as acting CJ of Uttarakhand HC.
Note- Prior to his appointment as CJ of Uttarakhand HC, R S Chauhanwas CJ of Telangana.
The President of India in exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of
India transfer the CJ of HC to another.
About Justice Raghvendra Singh(R S) Chauhan:
i.He was enrolled as an Advocate on November 13, 1983 and practiced in the Rajasthan High Court, Jaipur Bench for
20 years
ii.He was appointed as Acting CJ of Telangana HC on 04th April, 2019 and later was elevated as CJ of Telangana HC on
22nd June, 2019.
Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia Appointed as CJ of Gauhati HC
Appointment
The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind appointed Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, as CJ of Gauhati HC with effect from the
date he assumed charge of his office.
Succeeds
He takes over the charge from Justice Nongmeikapam(N) Kotiswar Singh, who was appointed as the acting CJ of the
Gauhati HC after the retirement of Justice Ajai Lamba in September 2020.
Note– Prior to his appointment as CJ of Gauhati HC, he was a judge of the Uttarakhand HC.
The Chief Justice and Judges of the High Courts are appointed by the President under clause (1) of Article 217 of the
Constitution.
About Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia:
i.He was enrolled as an Advocate on July 07, 1986 and practiced in the Allahabad and Uttarakhand HC.
ii.He was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court on November 1, 2008.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh launches Welfare Schemes; Dedicated January 2021 to Girl Child
On January 7, 2021, The Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab Amarinder Singh virtually launched a set of welfare projects
while dedicating January 2021 as “Dheeyan Di Lohri” from Chandigarh.

• Under ‘Dheeiyan Di Lohri’, Amarinder gave five girl children, along with their mothers, a shagun of Rs 5,100
and baby kits for each. Under the scheme, a series of events will be held every day across districts, beginning
with Mohali district, through the month to mark the occasion of Lohri.
• Also free sanitary pads will be provided for girls studying in high school and colleges in the state.
Other Welfare Projects:
Basera programme
With the launch of the BASERA programme, 2816 slum dwellers in 10 slums of Patiala, Bathinda, Fazilka and Moga
districts will get proprietary rights in the first phase.
• The proprietary rights are bestowed upon the slum dwellers as a New Year gift on the birthday of CM’s father
Maharaja Yadavindra Singh.
Smart power meters Project:
Rs. 75.64 crore three-phase Smart Metering project was also launched by the CM. It is a consumer-friendly scheme
which will help in reducing human error in manual reading through automatic uploading of data.
• From January 2021 to December 2021, a total of 96,000 meters will be installed across the state by Punjab
State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) under the project.
• It will also curb the malpractice of reading concealment/theft of electricity.
e-Daakhil
The new e-Daakhil portal was launched in accordance with the new Consumer Protection Act 2019 to help consumers
safeguard their rights. It envisages filling of consumer disputes electronically to Consumer Disputes Redressal
Commission.
• The portal will provide citizens an effective mechanism to protect them from exploitation at the hands of
traders.
Cricket kits for youth
The CM also launched the scheme for distribution of 2500 sports/cricket kits through community participation
especially of the Ludhiana industry. This scheme will promote health awareness and sports culture.

Maharashtra Celebrates Marathi Journalist Day on January 6, 2021


Marathi Journalist day is celebrated every year on January 6 across Maharashtra in the memory of Late
Balshastri Jambhekar, who is known as the ‘Father of Marathi journalism’.

Why January 6?
i.The first issue of the first newspaper in Marathi, ‘Darpan’, founded by Balshastri Jambhekar was issued on January 6,
1832.
ii.Since then this day has been celebrated as the Marathi Journalist day in the State.
iii.Another significance of January 6 is on this day Balshastri Jambhekar was born in 1812 at Sindhudurg district,
Maharashtra.
Note – Marathi Journalism has given voice to the common man and also to the Sanyukta Maharashtra
movement(was an organisation in India that advocated for a separate Marathi-speaking state in Western India from
1956 to 1960).

On this day, journalist across Maharashtra is being felicitated for being exemplary followers
Key Info about Balshastri Jambhekar:
Father of Marathi journalism
He is known as Father of Marathi journalism for his contribution to Marathi Journalism and for starting 1st Marathi
newspaper and the 1st Marathi monthly named ‘Digdarshan’ in 1840
Founded & Printed
He also founded ‘The Bombay Native General Library’ and started ‘Native Improvement Society’.
He published research papers in the quarterly journal of the Asiatic Society and became the 1st Indian to do so.
He was the 1st person to print Dnyaneshwari in 1845. It was known as the first ever-printed version.
Languages
He had mastery in many languages including Marathi, Sanskrit, English and Hindi. Apart from that he also had a good
grasp of Greek, Latin, French, Gujarati and Bengali.
Worked as
He served as the 1st professor of Hindi in the Elphinstone College, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
He also worked as Director of the Colaba Observatory, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Books
He wrote books like Neetikatha (stories on morality), Encyclopedic History of England, English grammar, History of
India and Mathematics based on Zero.
