Course Title : Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Instructor-In-Charge : Dr. Dalia Nandi

Learning Outcomes:

• Students must be able to explain the junction properties and the phenomenon of
rectification draw the I-V characteristics and identify operating points; Calculate
ripple factors, efficiency of power supplies.
• Students will be able to draw and explain the I-V characteristics of BJTs – both input
and output; learn to bias transistors, both as amplifiers and switches; identify
operating points.
• Students will be able to design, test and examine simple circuits with transistor.
• Students will be able to test, repair, modify and take-up design exercise.
• Students will have clear knowledge of basic circuit analysis and its functions and
their limitations.
• Student will analyse the different OPAMP circuits and apply the knowledge of
network theory to OPAMP circuits.

Course Prerequisites: Basic knowledge about operation of components R, L, and C.


Basic knowledge about the semiconductor, Ohms Law, Voltage current equations. Basic
knowledge of Differentiation, Integration, Differential equation, matrix etc.

Syllabus

• DC Network Theorem:

Definition of electric circuit network; linear circuit, non-linear circuit, bilateral circuit,
unilateral circuit; Source: AC, DC, average and RMS values; Dependent source; Kirchhoff’s
law, Thevenin’s theorem, Norton Theorem, nodal analysis, mesh analysis, Maximum power
transfer theorem with proof.

• Semiconductors Diode and It’s Application:


Conductors, Semiconductors and Insulators: electrical properties, band diagrams. Fermi
levels; Semiconductors: intrinsic and extrinsic, energy band diagram, P-type and N-type
semiconductors. Formation of P-N junction, energy band diagram, built-in-potential; Forward
and Reverse biased P-N junction, formation of depletion zone, V-I characteristics, Avalanche
breakdown and its reverse characteristics; Rectifier circuits: half wave, full wave, PIV, DC
voltage and current, ripple factor, efficiency; Filters and Regulators: Capacitor filter, π-
section filter, Zener diode, idea of regulation.

• Bipolar Junction Transistors:

Formation of PNP / NPN junctions, energy band diagram; transistor mechanism and principle
of transistors, CE, CB, CC configuration, transistor characteristics: cut-off active and
saturation mode, transistor action, current amplification factors for CB and CE modes.

Biasing and Bias stability: Transistor Biasing and Stability: Q-point, calculation of stability
factor; Compensation techniques.

• Feed Back Amplifier, Oscillators:

Concept (Block diagram), properties, positive and negative feedback, loop gain, open loop
gain, feedback factors; topologies of feedback amplifier; effect of feedback on gain, output
impedance, input impedance, sensitivities (qualitative), bandwidth stability; effect of positive
feedback: instability and oscillation, condition of oscillation, Barkhausen criteria.

• Operational Amplifier:

Ideal OPAMP, Differential Amplifier, CMRR, Open & Closed loop circuits, inverting &
noninverting amplifiers, voltage follower/buffer circuit. Applications of Operational
Amplifiers: adder, integrator & differentiator, comparator, voltage to current and current to
voltage converter.
