COURSE GUIDE
MS BEM 208 (Environmental Impact Assessment)

Congratulations!
You are now in the second year of your course
Master of Science in Biodiversity and Environmental Management.

Congratulations also to the New MS BEM Graduate Students and

Welcome to the Bicol University.

With the “new normal” we are currently facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SY 2020-2021 will
never be easy for all of us. Our routines are changing as our lives are upheaved by changes
brought by CoVid-19. BUCAF is with you in responding to various academic challenges. Thus,
flexible teaching and learning modalities particularly an online course will be employed for you to
learn while we are waiting that everything will return back to the usual face-to-face conduct of
classes.

As an online learner, it is essential to be self-motivated, persistent, disciplined, and have time

management skills. Participating in an online course will not entirely be easy. The same course
materials and standards of excellence required in the face-to-face courses are still your
responsibility. This course guide will lead you to different topics to be discussed for the whole
semester. Read this material before starting any lesson in this course because it outlines all
information and requirements that you need to complete the course.

For this course, we will be using a variety of platforms as our “virtual classroom”. For the most
part, we will be using Google Classroom. Facebook Groups will also be utilized for back- up.
Materials and announcements will be posted in both to cater to the different connectivity and
accessibility status of everyone in the block. Messenger and Google Meet will also be utilized
minimally for real-time conversation and consultation whenever needed (depending on the
students). To access the course sites:

a. Google Classroom

Go to https://classroom.google.com and log in using your BU e-mail account (You can

only access the course site using a BU account; personal Google accounts are not accepted).
Once you are logged in, click the plus (+) icon on the upper right-hand corner on the screen and
click “Join Class”. You will then be prompted to enter the class code.

6. Course Requirements / Assessment Activities

The assessment that will be used is categorized into two: formative and summative. For
the formative assessment, you will encounter Self-Assessment quizzes in every lesson module

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY
ISO 9001-2015 Guinobatan, Albay
TÜV Rheinland ID 910863351

that are intended to aid you in learning and validate your gained knowledge in each lesson; this
will not be recorded or graded.

Summative assessment will all be graded; it will be in four (4) forms:

 First are the activities at the end of each lesson module, which will be graded weekly. This
will serve as an immediate feedback mechanism for you to know if you need to go back to
the previous module.
 Major Outputs (lab activities). The details of each major output will be discussed after the
lecture session.
 Third, are the Major Exams per term (Midterm and Final Examination). The major exams
scheduled online examinations (See Course Schedule). Details will be given during classes
and will be available on the course site.

To ensure objectivity, rubrics will be used for the evaluation of your outputs whenever
applicable and can be accessed on the course site.

 The major output is from the laboratory activities scheduled at the end of the term.

7. Grading System
As indicated in the course syllabus, your course performance will be evaluated based
on the following criteria:

Midterm/Final Exam 30%

Performance in Forum/Group dynamics 10
Practicum/Case Analysis 20%
Written and oral presentation of the activity/report topic 20%
Assignments/EIS Paper 20%
Total 100%

8. Learning Resources

To facilitate everything, learning resources/materials will be made available on

your course site. You may access these anytime of the entire duration of the course.

However, for those students under Type B and C, you are advised to inform me
ahead of time so that the necessary solution may be served at once to avoid problems at
the end of the semester. The learning material is but not limited to the following:

a. Modules
Modules will be prepared per lesson and are uploaded in the course site. Each
module in the manual has its own set of Self-Assessment Tests. You are
required to read all the modules and take the self-assessment tests. You will
also find the activities at the end of each module which you need to accomplish
and submit on the indicated date.

b. Video Lectures/Resources.
Video lectures/resources are additional resources to help you better
understand the topic. They are YouTube videos and the links are provided in
the module and course site sorted per topic. You are not required to watch the
videos; however, it will be a great resource should you access it.

c. Workbook with worksheet activities that will be done at home.

This will enable the student to enhance their ability to work independently.

d. Additional Reading Materials.

Other reading materials are shown in your different learning resources. You
are encouraged to read and comprehend the different concepts/ lessons
related to your lesson/topic. This will guide/help you in performing the activities
and even in answering the self-assessment test given at the end of every
lesson.
