ASSIGNMENT 1

Plain steel plated shear panels

(To be submitted after two weeks)

Fig. 1 shows plan and elevation of a seven-storey steel framed shear wall building with steel-plated
in-fill walls acting as shear panels. The shear panels are made of flat steel plates. Assume the
following data:
Width of the building, b = 5.0m + Student Serial No.
Storey height, h = 3.5 m
Distance between the frame, B = 10.0 m + Student Serial No.
Yield stress of steel plate, fy = 350 MPa
Poisson’s ration of steel plate, υs = 0.25
Modulus of elasticity of steel plate, Es = 200 kN/mm2
Wind load, w

i. Assuming rigid pin-ended boundary frames, find the shear resistance of the steel plated
shear panels if the thickness of the steel plate varies from 1 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm and 50
mm using various analytical models described in the class. Identify whether the shear
resistance of the steel plated shear panels will be governed by pure tension field,
incomplete tension field or pure shear, for each of the steel plate thickness.

With the help of graphs and charts, discuss the influence of steel plate thickness on
buckling stress, buckling load, pre-buckling stiffness, ultimate shear resistance and
stiffness, and failure modes of shear panels.

If a steel plate of thickness 10 mm is used in the building (as shown in Fig. 1), find out
whether the shear resistance of the steel plated shear panels will be adequate or not in

resisting a wind load (w) of 1 kN/m2. Find the minimum thickness of the steel plate,
necessary to resist a wind load (w) of 1 kN/mm2.

ii. Assuming beam-column frame to be flexible and beam-column frame connections are
fixed and plastic hinges to form in the beams (Fig. 1):

Determine the ultimate shear resistance of in-fill shear panels made of 1, 5, 10 and 20
mm thick steel plates with beams having variable flexibility (consider beam plastic
moment, Mp varying from 0 to 400 kN.m at an increment of 100 kN.m) using Basler,
Rocky & Skaloud, Cardiff and Hossain models.

Discuss the influence of variable steel plate thickness and Mp on location of plastic
hinges (c) and ultimate shear resistance with graphs and charts. Also compare the
performance of various models in predicting the shear resistance of the panels.
