LAB REPORT #5
TRAVERSE AREA USING COORDINATES
I. Introduction
Apart from Heron’s formula and DMD method, surveyor’s also use the
distance or the y-coordinate. These coordinates are most commonly associated with
the Earth. It differs from global latitude and longitude because it divides Earth into 60
zones and projects each to the plane as basis for its coordinates.
In this activity, the surveyor used Global Positioning System from an android
phone with a Google Maps application in plotting points of a traverse where the
coordinates are readily available. The surveyor also used UTM conversions to
determine the easting and northing of the sad coordinates. The data obtained was
To know how to plot points using GPS on an android phone with Google
Maps application;
To know how to look for the coordinates, easting and northing in Google
Maps;
III. Instruments
IV. Procedure
1. Go to your phone’s settings and turn ON the “Access to my location” tab and
icon.
3. This will bring you to your list of starred places, want to go and favorites. Press
4. Press “Edit”
5. Press “Map”.
6. You will be navigated shortly to your location and you will see a red pin on the
screen. This red pin will serve as point on your traverse, choose a location as to
where you will drop the pin and press “OK”.
7. After dropping the pin, the yellow pin will represent the starred places or point in
your traverse.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 to plot the remaining points (a total of at least 5 points) in your
traverse. The points with the starred places will automatically show its
coordinates. Record the data in each point.
9. NOTE: Step 9-10 are OPTIONAL, you may skip and resume to Step 11.
Add labels to the plotted points by pressing any of the starred places and swipe
up. Press “Label” which will bring you to the Add label page. Enter a label and
press “Add label”.
10. Repeat step 9 until all the points are labeled. Press any of the points and notice
that its corresponding coordinates can be seen in the lower part of the screen.
Record the gathered data.
11. Enter the recorded data in the UTM conversion table and tabulate the easting
and northing.
