Senior Specialty Registrar in Orthodontics with fixed term training appointment (FTTA)
Job Description
1. The Hospitals
Situated in the heart of Bristol, UH Bristol is a large city centre Teaching Trust
employing over 7000 staff, with annual revenue of nearly £400 million and with a
total of 1156 beds throughout the Trust. We are one of the largest employers in
Bristol and provide a wide range of in-patient, out-patient and day-care services to
the local population within Bristol, as well as being the biggest specialist referral
centre for the South West England.
Bristol Dental Hospital and School is a major specialist centre in the South West
Region. The Dental Hospital has approximately 70,000 patient attendances per
annum and has an excellent national and international reputation for patient care,
scholarship and research. Most of the clinical areas in the Dental Hospital have been
refurbished recently and there is an ongoing programme of regeneration throughout
the Hospital. Academics work in close association with NHS colleagues and share
joint management procedures. The Dental Hospital site is adjacent to the Bristol
Royal Infirmary (BRI), a major tertiary referral centre, where all investigative, medical
and surgical facilities are present within the complex. There is a designated
Children’s Hospital within the Bristol Royal Infirmary complex.
The Dental Hospital has undergone a major refurbishment which was completed in
2008 following the award of £16.1 million by the Department of Health and the
Higher Education Funding Council in England in order to accommodate increased
undergraduate numbers.

Bath Royal United Hospital NHS Trust
The Royal United Hospital, Bath, is a District General Hospital, with a population of
just under 400,000 and therefore provides all the acute services of a District General
Hospital. Bath is a University town and the hospital maintains close links with the
University, and the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering was one of the first such
Departments in the country. The combined Orthodontic and Oral Surgery
Department was opened in 1981 and has an attractive modern open plan clinic.
There is a modern postgraduate centre with excellent new library facilities.
Frenchay Hospital is a District General Hospital providing facilities for Acute Care
within North Bristol. Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals are part of the North Bristol
NHS Trust, which is the largest in the South and West Region. It serves a population
of approximately 500,000, has 1,500 beds, employs over 8,000 staff and has an
annual revenue budget of about £290m.
The orthodontic trainees attend monthly cleft lip and palate clinics in the new
dedicated South West Cleft outpatient unit at Frenchay Hospital. The Bristol Cleft
Team is, with Swansea, a member of the South Wales and South West Clinical
Network for cleft lip and palate care. The Bristol cleft team comprises primary
surgeons, secondary surgeons, orthodontist, speech and language therapists,
psychologists, feeding specialist nurses and support staff. The team organises and
co-ordinates the delivery of an integrated cleft lip and palate service for the South
West.

2. The Job Itself
a) Title:
Senior Specialty Registrar in Orthodontics with Fixed Term Training Appointment.
The Senior Specialist Trainee has six sessions with Child Dental Health department in order
to gain experience at a Dental Hospital relevant to a NHS Consultant in a large teaching
institution.
This includes multidisciplinary clinics covering joint clinics with restorative, paediatric and
surgical colleagues. The trainee has responsibility for planning joint cases for the fortnightly
joint facial clinics at the Dental Hospital. Relevant experience in supervising undergraduate
dental students and providing teaching material for seminars and lectures is also gained.
The trainee is also responsible for contributing and managing the DDS Programme journal
club for more junior trainees in orthodontics.
The Specialist Registrar attends the Orthodontic Department at the Royal United Hospital,
Bath, for four sessions per week with Miss H Knight and Dr A J Ireland, in order to gain
experience of direct relevance to a regional consultant post.
The Department has good working relationships with the Community Services, local
specialist practices and GDPs. Six general dental practitioners with a special interest in
orthodontics attend the department on a one session per week basis treating patients as in
a primary care setting.
There is an active dental section to the Bath Clinical Society with monthly meetings in the
Postgraduate Centre and Postgraduate courses for local Practitioners are held on a yearly
basis.

1 Staff Grade (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), 6 Dentists with a Special
Interest in Orthodontics
Frenchay Hospital
The trainee will work with the full cleft lip and palate team including primary
and secondary cleft surgeons and specialist speech and language therapists.
These are in line with the Specialist Advisory Committee guidelines and
include a high percentage of complex and multidisciplinary cases.

The holders of these posts have a significant role in the running of the regular
journal clubs involving more junior trainees.
iii) Study/Research

Study and examination leave allowance are as stated in the Terms and
Conditions of Service.
iv) Administrative
Clinical. The routine administrative content of this post is allowed for in the
timetable.
v) Audit
Orthodontics is a small speciality within the South West Region and so audit
takes place principally at a Regional and sub-regional level. Registrars attend
all these meetings and take a full part. The departments participate in all
national specialty audits.
d) Location of Duties
a) The post is recognised by the South West dental Postgraduate Dean for
postgraduate training and as a fixed term training appointment post has been

approved by the Specialist Advisory Committee of the Royal College of
Surgeons
i) There is a Speciality Library housed within Bristol Dental Hospital, with a wide
range of relevant journals.
iii) Bristol University Medical Library, 10 minutes walk from the Bristol Royal
Infirmary.
v) There is a postgraduate centre and library at Bath Royal United Hospital with
a Dental Section.
e) The training period is structured according to the guidelines for the two years
additional training for NHS Consultants in Orthodontics issued by the SAC and
accepted by the General Dental Council. Training is geared towards
successful performance in the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship
Examination.
c) The salary scale for senior Specialty Registrars is from £29,705-£46,708 per
annum (this may be subject to change).

d) Accommodation
All charges are made in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service
of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (paragraphs 173-182)
5. Other Facilities
a) Clubs
Junior Medical and Dental Staff have access to the University sports facilities
as honorary members of the University. Access to the Union Swimming Pool
and to the Woodland House Squash Courts is by application for associate
membership tickets at the General Enquiry Office, Senate House, University
of Bristol. When applying for either membership, identification must be
produced as to the post he/she holds in the Trust. Certificates for either of
these purposes may be obtained on request in the Medical Staffing
Department, Old Building, BRI
At the Bristol Royal Infirmary there is an actively patronised student bar and
dining facilities. A swimming pool and squash courts are within the complex.
At Bath Royal United Hospital there are sports facilities including tennis
courts, heated swimming pool and dining facilities in the postgraduate centre.
b) Shopping
Bristol Dental Hospital is only a few minutes walk away from one of the City’s
main shopping areas.
d) Transport
The intercity and country bus terminus is very near to BDH and other city bus
routes pass within a couple of minutes walking distance.

There are two railway stations. Trains to London take approximately 1½
hours from Bristol. The airport is about 9 miles distance.

6. Conditions of Appointment
a) The successful candidate will be required to meet the criteria of the person
specification.
c) Carry-over of leave
The person appointed to this post may have substantial access to children as
defined in Joint Circular No HC (88)9, HOC8/88 and WHC(88)10. Applicants
are therefore advised that shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a
form disclosing any convictions, bind-over orders or cautions.
Candidates are assured that the completed form will be treated with strict
confidentiality and will not be disclosed to the Appointments Committee until
the successful candidate has been selected. A Police check will only be
requested in respect of the candidate recommended for appointment. All
forms completed and returned by other candidates will be destroyed when
the final selection of the candidate to be recommended for appointment has
been made.
