Tester

Section 1 Introduction
The M228 Rotawash color fastness tester is suitable for color fastness testing to many
standards and methods, including ISO, AATCC, IWSTM, Marks and Spencer and Next.
The unit uses water as the heating medium and can be used in different configurations of
canister numbers and capacities (see table below).
The unit runs at 40 rpm ± 2 rpm as required by all relevant current standards

NOTE: The unit has been designed to run at a maximum temperature of 96°C. Under no
circumstances should any other heating medium apart from water be used in the
Rotawash.

Section 2 Unpacking and Installation

2.1 Unpacking

The unit should be carefully unpacked and inspected. In the unlikely event of anything
being damaged or missing, please contact the Customer Service Manager at the address
below:

SDL Atlas LTD

The unit is free standing and should be located close to the services required:

• A drain for excess water

• A cold water supply (supply must be more than 25PSI)
• Power supply (see table on page IV for details)

The unit is intended to be permanently plumbed in to a cold water supply and to a drain.
The tank is automatically filled and drained by electronically controlled valves. A manual
drain is also built into the unit should the need arise. This is located on the rear of the
machine.

SDL Atlas recommends that the unit be connected to the electricity supply by a qualified
electrician. Connect the live (grey) and neutral (blue) wire of attached power supply cord
to a circuit breaker, connect the earth wire (yellow/green) to the earth terminal bus and
provided a properly fixing. The circuit breaker rating of 63 A is recommended, and the
circuit breaker shall be mounted near the equipment for ease of operation.

2.2 The unit size

2.2.1 M228B 630X600X960mm (25X23.6X37.8in) 96Kg (211 pounds)

2.2.2 M228C 760X600X960mm (30X23.6X37.8in) 110Kg (242 pounds)

It is recommended that the unit be placed in an area of low traffic since the lid of the unit
can become hot during use and steam will be produced which will escape through the
vents in the lid.

Please leave a distance of at least 3 inches (8cm) free on the back side of the machine to
allow the cooling fan to function properly and to allow access to the isolator switch

audible alarm will sound. A screen will instruct you to check the water supply is on and to
check the manual drain is closed. If the water supply and drain were in the wrong state,
please rectify, refill water level and then re start the test. If however, the water supply and
drain are in the correct state, switch off machine and contact your authorized SDL Atlas
agent for service.

Section 4 Test Procedure

Safety Notes:

• When testing at elevated temperatures, the lid of the bath will become hot.
Do not place items on top of the lid or touch the lid during use. A sticker
which turns red at elevated temperatures is in place on the lid.

• When testing at elevated temperatures, take care as steam will escape from
the lid as it is opened.

• Use heat protective gloves when loading and unloading canisters.

• If the unit is to be left unused for any length of time, it is recommended that
the water be drained out of the unit.

• The emergency stop is positioned on the front of the control; this will cut
off power to the machine.

4.1 TESTING PROCEDURES

For the purposes of this manual, reference is made to ISO test procedures. For specific
test procedures relating to other methods, consult the relevant method.

If you require specific information from standards, these standards can be purchased
from SDL ATLAS, please consult the sales team for availability and prices.

4.1.1 TEST SPECIMEN

4.1.1.1 If the textile to be tested is fabric

Either

a) Attach a specimen measuring 40 mm x 100 mm to a piece of the

multifiber adjacent fabric, also measuring 40 mm x 100 mm, by sewing
along one of the shorter side, with the multifiber fabric next to the face
of the specimen

Or

b) Attach a specimen measuring 40 mm x 100 mm between the two

single-fiber adjacent fabrics, also measuring 40 mm x 100 mm, by
sewing along one of the shorter sides.

4.1.1.2 Where yarn or loose fiber is to be tested

Take a mass of the yarn or loose fiber approximately equal to one-half

of the combined mass of the adjacent fabrics and

Either

a) Place it between a 40 mm x 100 mm piece of the multifiber adjacent

fabric and a 40 mm x 100 mm piece of the non-dye able fabric and sew

11
M228B/C Rotawash Color Fastness
Tester
them along all four sides

Or

b) Place it between a 40 mm x 100 mm piece of each of the two specified

single-fiber fabrics and sew along all four sides to form a composite
specimen.

4.1.2 PROCEDURE

• Place the composite specimen in the container and add the

necessary amount of relevant solution, previously heated to the
required temperature.

Note: for some fastness tests, it may be necessary to add stainless steel balls or
stainless steel discs to the solution. These are added at this stage.

• Close the lid by pulling down on the clips at either side of the canister

• Put the type1 canister in the carrier by locating the pins on the
canister into the slots on the carrier and twisting until secure. Put
type2 canister into the carrier like the follow figure.

• Treat the composite specimen at the required temperature for the

required time

• Remove the composite specimen, rinse it twice in cold distilled water

and then in cold running tap-water for 10 min and squeeze it. Open
out the composite specimen by breaking the stitching on all but one
of the shorter sides and dry it by hanging it in air at a temperature not
exceeding 60ºC, with the three parts in contact only at the remaining
line of stitching.

• Assess the change in color of the specimen and the staining of the
adjacent fabrics with the grey scales.

4.2 TEST REPORT

Report the numerical ratings for the change in color of the test specimen and for
the staining of each kind of adjacent fabric used.
