Define the following and give the Units.

The joule (J)
1. Potential Energy
the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors.
2. Kinetic Energy
energy which a body possesses by virtue of being in motion. Joules (J)
3. Law of Conservation of energy
that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another. joule
4. Mass is both a property of a physical body and a measure of its resistance to
acceleration (a change in its state of motion) when a net force is applied.
5. Velocity kilogram (kg)
the speed of something in a given direction. meters per sec
Explain or answer the questions.

6. What are the formulas for PE and KE?

The equation for Kinetic Energy is KE = 1/2 m v^2,
pe (9.8 m / s2 at the surface of the earth)
7. What is the PE of a 2.5 kg book that is suspended 5 m above the floor?
pe= 2.5 x 9.8 x 5 122.5 J

8. What is the KE of a 1500 kg car traveling at a constant speed of 4.2 m/s?

ke= 0.5 x 1500 x 4.22 = 13230

9. Express the relationship of mechanical energy to the sum of the kinetic and potential energy.

10. Explain the Law of Conservation of Energy and how it relates to the total energy of a system. Does this relate to the
sum of kinetic and potential?

11. A skater is traveling toward a ramp at the given conditions.

He has enough velocity to get to position 3. He will stop at that
point and roll back down the ramp. Fill-in the missing parts of the chart.

Label the diagram where PE is Highest and Lowest. Also label where KE is highest and Lowest.

12. What happens to the power output of the dam if the water reservoir
gets too low?

13. If the speed of the water traveling through the dam increases, what
happens to the amount of power generated by the dam?

14. Where in the diagram is the water traveling the fastest?

15. What physics idea is the driving “force” that provides a hydroelectric dam its power?

16. Describe 3 Energy changes that occur in the hydroelectric dam.
