University benefits for work

Study is the base of knowledge. During our life we must go to primary and secondary

school and we can choose whether to go to University or not. If we talk about success, going to

University should be more beneficial than learning just through life experience, as long as

University will provide the student a lot of knowledge difficult to acquire otherwise, a good

acquisition of money and an excellent work experience.

First of all, when you go to University you can become an expert in the subject you love.

If when we are teenagers, we cannot choose the subject to study in high school, degree careers

give us the opportunity to know everything there is to know about a subject. Authors like Eric

Enge says that become an expert is important for work because “people are more likely to

believe your opinion when you know more” (Enge). Besides, University allows to obtain critical

thinking from the reading and discussion of a same concept with teachers and colleagues,

through a variety of authors and bibliographic perspectives which will allow us to specialize in

this topic. Moreover, most of the universities have a huge library where we can find whatever we

want.

There are many reasons why university libraries are important in college and can help the

professional development of a successful expert. First, it is an inspiring study space. According

with a study published by Head and Eisenberg in the Project Information Literacy Report, library

is for students a place “where they could rely on (…) equipment rather than their own devices

that often had too many easy access distractions, including Facebook” (Head and Eisenberg).

Also, libraries have the technology students need, from computer workstations to 3D printers.

For example, n student could need a photocopy and in library can obtain it. The last reason why
academic libraries could be profitable for a complete formation is their access to digital

resources. If a student is interested in a particular topic, libraries offer an important an reliable

school’s subscription database.

Secondly, graduates earn more money than regular workers and have more opportunities

to obtain incomes. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies people who obtain a degree earn

35% more than school leavers. In the same way, Bahney says that the average college graduate

“earns $78,000 a year compared to the $45,000 earned by someone with only a high school

education, according to the analysis” (Bahney), the author discover that “That's a 75% premium,

or more than $30,000 a year” (Bahney). This is not only because generally works pays an extra

for the University title but because specialization is like a funnel: the more you study, the less

competition you will have in your field. Consequently, this amount will increase if you obtain a

M. A. or a PhD. Besides, during and after your career you can obtain other kind of incomes as

founding for trips or scholarships to study in other countries. For example, there are a lot of

foundations like Fundación Carolina, Erasmus or Fulbright that annually offer scholarships for

graduates and students.

Finally, studying in a University provides different ways to practice getting work

experience. Even if some research, as the one carried out by Career Builder, demonstrate that

only one in three employers thinks students graduate with the skills they need in the workplace,

there are evidence that shows University promotes internships in order to graduate students can

gain experience as well as knowledge about different ways to work. Other kind of valuable

experience for students to know working field is the volunteer programs that lots of University

provide.
Even if in a first sight they seem to be the same, there are many differences between

internship and volunteering. The first difference is about the goal of each one. While internship

is a formal work experience with the objective of gaining experience in a particular occupation

or industry, the main purpose of volunteering experiences is benefitting someone else. Another

difference is about the time it longs. Internships always have a short-term arrangement, while a

volunteer role should last for 20 or 30 years. The most notable difference between intern and

volunteer are the nature of the role. While internships are generally skilled roles with a view to

professional development, volunteering covers a wide array or roles.

In conclusion, academic learning offers the students a big chance to gain success in life,

not only because they can specialize in the field they love, but because they can obtain more

money or incomes and they can get work experience. Because of all these three reasons,

University is an invaluable experience of learning.
