USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, digital cameras, printers,
personal media players, flash drives, Network Adapters, and external hard drives. For many
of those devices, USB has become the standard connection method.
When ever usb is entered to a computer – pc sends an unique address so when ever
data is sent or received the task is done through that address.
Up to 127 devices, including the hub devices, may be connected to a single host
controller.
Bi-directional
Isochronous
Hot swapping
Full support for real-time data for voice, audio, and compressed video
Cable power
USB CONNECTORS
Most USB cables have two types of USB connectors,
1) TYPE A : A type A USB connector is on the end that plugs into your computer.
Type A USB connectors are wide and flat, with a plastic piece inside that prevents
the user from plugging them in upside down
2) TYPE B: A Type B USB connector plugs into the peripheral device. TYPE B
USB connector square in shape and there is a notch taken out of two of the
corners.
USB CABLE
The data cables for USB 1.x and USB 2.x use a twisted pair to reduce noise and crosstalk.
The maximum length of a standard USB cable (for USB 2.0 or earlier) is 5 metres (16.4
ft). The primary reason for this limit is the maximum allowed round-trip delay of about
1,500 ns.
DEVICE CLASS
1) USB MASS STORAGE: USB implements connections to storage devices
using a set of standards called the USB mass storage device class (referred to
as MSC or UMS). This was initially intended for traditional magnetic and
optical drives, but has been extended to support a wide variety of devices,
particularly flash drives.
2) HUMAN INTERFACE DEVICE: Mice and keyboards usually have USB
connectors. These can be used with older computers that have PS/2
connectors with the aid of a small USB-to-PS/2 adapter. Such adaptors contain
no logic circuitry: the hardware in the USB keyboard or mouse is designed to
detect whether it is connected to a USB or PS/2 port, and communicate using
the appropriate protocol
Wireless USB
Universal serial bus (USB) technology has been a popular connection type for PCs and it's
migrating into consumer electronic (CE) and mobile devices. Now this high-speed and
effective connection interface is unwiring to provide the functionality of wired USB without
the burden of cables. This next iteration of USB technology is the focus of the new Wireless
USB Promoter Group, which will define the specifications that will eventually provide
standards for the technology.
APPLICATION
High Speed data transfer
Connecting purpose
LIMITATION
1) USB can only travel to 16 feet.
2) it does effect commercial and industrial settings who use the protocol in large scale
control situations.
