(ECT-201)

Unit –I
Introduction, element and compound semiconductors, Energy band model, electron and hole
concentrations in semiconductors (intrinsic & extrinsic) , temp. dependence of carrier
concentrations.
Carrier transport in semiconductors – Drift and diffusion currents. Excess carriers in
semiconductors – Generations & recombination. Basic equation for semiconductor device
operation.

Unit – II
P-N junctions, abrupt and linearly graded junctions. V-I char. Of an ideal diode, a real diode, C-V
char. of a reverse biased p-n junction in reverse bias –Zener and avalanche breakdown. Diode
circuit model. P-n junction applications – Half Wave, full wave and bridge rectifier, varactor,
varistor, voltage regulator,demodulator, Solar cells diodes as a switch.

Unit – III
Bipolar junction transistor – Structure, principle of operation , ideal & real transistor,I-V char.
small signal equivalent circuits, high frequency and switching transistor. Power transistor, BJT as
an amplifier- biasing, small signal analysis of class A amplifier . Frequency response of RC
coupled amplifier. BJT as a switch.

Unit-IV
JFET, basic structure, operating principle, I-V char., JFET amplifier – biasing analysis of JFET
amplifier. MOSFET basic structure, enhancement & depletion type MOSFET, I-V char. C-V
MOSFET parameters. MOSFET amplifiers.

The uniform plane wave: Wave motion in free space & perfect dielectrics, plane waves in lossy
dielectrics, the pyonting vector and power considerations, propagation in good conductors, skin
effect, reflection of uniform plane waves, SWR

Unit-IV
Transmission lines and waveguides : the transmission line equations, graphical methods, smith
chart, time domain and frequency domain analysis. TE,TM and TEM waves,TE and TM modes in
rectangular and circular wave guides, cut-off and guide wavelength, wave impedance and
char.impedance, dominant modes, power flow in wave guides, dielectric waveguides.

LTI systems: Continuous timeand discrete time signals, even and odd signals, elementary

Analysis of periodic signals : Fourier series representation of CTPS, convergence of FS

discrete time filters. Sampling theorem, sampling of continuous time signal with impulse

MODULATION TECHNIQUES: Basis constituents of communication system, need of
modulation, amplitude modulation, spectrum of AM wave, modulation index, DSBSE
modulation, SSB modulation, collector modulation, square law modulation methods. Method of
generating SSB signals; vestigial side band modulation, Detection of AM signal: diode detector

3 Fiber Optic Communication :


Introduction , Principle of light transmission in a fiber , Effect of index profile on
propagation , modes of propagation , number of modes via Fiber , single mode propagation ,
Rayleigh scattering losses , Absorption losses , mode coupling losses , bending losses , combined
losses , effects of dispersion on pulse transmission , intermodel dispersion , material dispersion ,

4. R.F. Tunner / I.E. Amplifier :


R.F. Tunner operation , factors affecting tunner design tunner circuit arrangement ,
Various sections of a VHF tunner , electronic tunning , Video IF section , transistor IF amplifiers
, Functional block diagram of CA 3068.

5. Video Detector and Amplifier :


Video detector , Video amplifier requirements , transistor video amplifier circuit design
, Video driver , contrast control method , screen size and amplifier BW , problems of D.C.
coupling , A.C. coupling and D.C. reinsertion , AGC systems – gain control of transistor ,
amplifiers , types of AGC , various AGC systems.

6 SYNC – Separator and Deflection Circuit :


Basic Principle , transistorized sync. Separator , sync. Waveform separator , vertical &
