Kayser Engelbert - Köln
Kayser pewter is a synonym for exceptionally high-quality Art Nouveau pewter
ware. Engelbert Kayser (1840-1911) -an art dealer, entrepreneur and ambitious artist
residing in Cologne- founded a trademark of the same name in 1894. His aim was to
lead the still historically characterised fine pewter of his parents foundry in Krefeld,
now managed by his brother Johann Peter Kayser, into the Art Nouveau era. He
employed the sculptors and artists Hugo Leven, Karl Geyer, Johann Christian
Kröner, Hermann Fauser and Karl Berghof. The high formal and material quality of
Kayserzinn was awarded gold medals at the World's Fair in Paris in 1900 and in St.
Louis in 1904, as well as in the epochal Turin exhibition of Applied Art in 1902.

late 1950s VEB Fischlandschmuck was forced to change its name to VEB
Ostseeschmuck and adopt a new mark (a highly stylized and left-facing fish). After
Germany reunification, VEB Ostseeschmuck was privatized in 1992 under the name
Ostsee Schmuch GmbH and reorganized with a focus on jewelry production on the
world market. Ostsee Schmuch GmbH is now one of the largest jewelry producers

Waldmann Ad. - Pforzheim

The company's history began 1918 in Pforzheim, the traditional German metropolis of
jewellery in the Black Forest, as a production facility for high class push action and
twist action pencils, made from gold and silver. Subsequently, Waldmann developed
and manufactured fountain pens and ball pens made from metals such as brass, silver
or 18 carat gold. Waldmann writing instruments with special twist mechanisms for 2
and 4 colour pen systems achieved worldwide patents. For the first time, this
masterstroke was honoured on the occasion of the world exposition in Paris in 1937,
namely with a silver medal for a 4 colour twist action pencil. Further patents
succeeded, amongst others for the legendary &Two-in-One& in 1972. This push action
ball pen had an ink cartridge incorporated in the barrel, and at the same time, the pen's
other end could be used as a fountain pen.

Bek Ernst Gideon - Pforzheim

Ernst Gideon Bek was born on the 18th April 1872 at Pforzheim , he served his
apprenticeship with the Rothacker company in Pforzheim, and then at the companies
Kinzinger in Pforzheim and Baer in Hanau. In 1896, he served as General Manager to
the Pforzheim jewelery industry at the World Exhibition in Chicago. He set up his own
business in 1897 and quickly established branches in Birmingham, Paris, Toronto, New
York City, Newark and India. In 1899 he married Emilie C. Binder, the daughter of
German emigrants, in America, and no doubt this is where the connection with Binder
Brothers stems from (Emilie's brother, Lawrence O. Binder, was one of the three
partners of Binder Brothers). Between 1897 to 1914 Bek travelled to America on more
than 100 occasions. In America he established Ernst Gideon Bek Mfg. Co. at 77 Austin
St., Newark, N. J. (the factory) and Ernst Gideon Bek, Inc., 15 Maiden Lane, New York
(the wholesale concern). In January 7, 2018 part of their shares, property of foreign
owners (Enemy Property)) were offered at public auction to American citizens by the
Alien Property Custodian's office. After returning from a trip to Italy in July 1932, Ernst
Gideon Bek suffered a stroke, from which he never fully recovered. In 1934, he passed
the business to his two sons Wesley, born 1903, and Orville Sigfrid, born 1909. The
brothers reformed the company as EG Bek & Co.KG

A. Wellner Söhne AG.Sächsische Metallwarenfabrik - Aue i. S. OLD
ADVERTISEMENTS
Founded in by Christian Gottlieb Wellner (1795-1857). He had six children,
amongst them two brothers, the elder one, Carl August (1824-1909) and the
younger one, Christian Gottlieb junior, who was born in 1831. Both became silver
plate manufacturers and settled in Aue, but Carl was much more successful. Carl
August continuously struggled for the expansion and technical innovation of his
business. The starting point of Wellner's world class machinery was the
acquisition of a spoon roller mill and a new spindle press. In 1870 he acquired the
building of "alte Langmühle" (old long mill) in Aue. In 1887 the "full-time"
tradesman Karl Krause from Leipzig was hired as a sole distributor of the entire
new-silver production. Formally a branch of August Wellner's company was
founded in Leipzig, which was headed by Krause. In practice, however, this was a
"one-sided treaty". Wellner delivered all his products to Krause at fixed prices
and Krause sold the products at arbitrary prices. In 1892, Karl August Wellner
formally transferred the management of his factory to two sons: Ernst Albin and
Richard Paul, and daughter Ida Marie, but still retained his personal guidance
until 1895. His successor was Paul Gaedt (husband of Ida Marie), who played a
major role in the successful continuation of the factory business after his
retirement. In 1913 Gaedt accomplished the conversion of the former private
company into a stock corporation Sächsische Metallwarenfabrik August Wellner
Söhne Aktiengesellschaft (AG), or Saxon Metal Goods Factory August Wellner
and Sons joint-stock company. In 1936 Paul Gaedt transferred the management of
the company to the former chairman Francis Cramer. Gaedt retired and soon had
to accept that the cutlery factory Wellner partially produced war products and
therefore was expropriated by the end of the Second World War. After the end of
World War II the Aue factory continued to operate and soon became the largest
cutlery producer in GDR, employing over a thousand people; however, the name
of the company was changed again in 1958 to VEB Auer Besteck und
Silberwarenwerke (ABS) or in English "Aue Cutlery and Silver Items Company".
The company held this name until 1992, when it was changed back to Wellner
Bestecke und Silberwaren, GmbH, Aue (Wellner Cutlery and Silver Items, Ltd.,
Aue). After the reunification of Germany (in 1989) the company passed through a
number of mergers and bankruptcy. The silver-plating factory in Aue was closed
in 2001, but manufacturing of cutlery under the Wellner mark is still continuing in
neighbouring Schneeberg. The new name of the company is Wellner/ABS GmbH
(Wellner/ABS Ltd.).
