A principal can support the school’s vision when

variously assigning leadership responsibilities. The first way is by setting clear and purposeful
expectations for the roles that they are identifying. This would require that the administrator
invest time in processing each role through the lens of sustainability. Administrators would
benefit from walking through a day in the life of each leadership role that they look to employ.
By going through the expected tasks of the leadership roles, the administrator would have a
clear view of the true requirements of the job. Gaining this perspective will allow the
administration to ensure that the role is purposeful and realistic. Taking these extra steps will
support the school in maintaining a positive school culture because staff will know that the
administration understands the true weight of the assigned leadership responsibilities.
Principals must also ensure that the roles and responsibilities allow for appropriate growth for
the staff that is in the leadership roles. Often, staff are placed in leadership roles and are not
provided with additional professional development opportunities. This can be very damaging to
the learning culture of a school.
Assigning leadership roles and responsibilities carefully
is very important for several reasons. First, having a strong leadership team can truly set a
school up for success or damage it tremendously. Placing staff members in leadership roles
requires that the principal take a survey of the role itself and how it can impact the culture of
the school as a whole and the individual team that is supported by the role. If the principal
places a person that is not trustworthy in a position that requires confidentiality may lead to
staff and students feeling violated and disrespected if the information that they have divulged is
shared with others. Also placing someone with limited maturity in a role best suited for a
veteran staff member may lead to other staff members being left to clean up the mess of an
unseasoned leader. Lastly, the assignment of leadership roles should be focused on achieving
the end goal which more than likely is going to be the students and families that are served by
the school. If the appointed leadership role along with its responsibilities does not make the
school environment better the necessity of the role should be considered.
